Returning to the podcast is Greg Prato. He’s just released his latest book titled Led Clones: The Led Zeppelin Imitator Craze of the '80s...and Beyond. Few bands in rock history have proven to be as enduring and influential as Led Zeppelin. And during the '80s, there was an overabundance of "Zeppelin disciples," or, as guitar great Gary Moore once put it, Led Clones. This is the first-ever book to tell the story about Zeppelin's immense influence on the bands and artists who came after them.
I ask Greg about many of the bands and artists in the book. The ones who do Zep justice and those who didn’t. There are the obvious ones like Kingdom Come, Whitesnake, and Greta Van Fleet while there are others you may be surprised make the book. Let’s find out!

Author Jeff Apter is back for his third appearance on the podcast. He’s just released the book Carl Perkins: The King of Rockabilly. The definitive and fascinating biography of the musical trailblazer who wrote the classic “Blue Suede Shoes” and was the influence behind countless other legendary hits, a rock and roll legend in his own right, and the original rockabilly cat—Carl Perkins.
The artists that are primarily covered in this podcast, the classic rock artists and bands from the mid 60s to mid 90s, are standing on the shoulders of the giants before them including Carl Perkins. A true pioneer, a groundbreaking guitarist, singer, and songwriter. This episode’s guest is Eric Drooker, the author of the new graphic novel titled Naked City. On the edge of the city, three bohemians struggle to answer the question: “Is it possible to survive as an artist in the 21st-century?” A young singer with no family hitchhikes to the city and sings her heart out. Late one night she encounters a street dancer who inspires her to have faith in her music no matter the cost. Desperate for rent money, she poses for a painter who has shifted from landscapes to nudes, and both of them learn a thing or two about the purpose of art and the meaning of success.
Eric Drooker’s drawings and posters are a familiar sight in the global street art movement, and his paintings appear frequently on covers of The New Yorker. His editorial illustrations have been seen in Nation, the New York Times, the Progressive, and more. His first book, Flood!: A Novel in Pictures, won the American Book Award, followed by Blood Song (soon to be a major motion picture). His graphic novels have been translated into seven languages. After designing the animation for the film Howl, Drooker was hired by DreamWorks Animation. His art is in the permanent collections of many museums including the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Library of Congress. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Author Chris Sutton returns to the podcast. He’s here to talk about his latest book Sparks 1969 to 1979: Every Album, Every Song. It’s part of Sonicbond’s On Track series. Beginning as a five-man band, the duo of Ron and Russell Mael retained the name and spent much of the seventies working with a succession of sidemen and collaborators. They ended the seventies on a high note with the collaboration with Italian composer and producer Giorgio Moroder for top 20 UK hit “No. 1 In Heaven”. Many who worked on Sparks records have shared their thoughts in the book. The popularity of Sparks has grown over the decades. In 2023 they sold out two nights at the Royal Albert Hall!

Author Suzanne Mattaboni is this episode’s guest. She recently released the second edition of her novel, Once In a Lifetime, a coming-of-age story set in the mid-1980s against a backdrop of vibrant music and art. The main character, an ambitious, new wave-influenced art student from Long Island who’s dying to kick-start her career—and her love life for that matter. She’s saving to get overseas to London, where the excitement of the post-punk era is coming to a head. To save for the trip, artsy Jessica and her avant-garde roommates take jobs in a progressive restaurant town on the Delaware River, where they deal with waitressing chaos, mystics, punk clubs, drag queens, mosh pits, and other assorted tribulations in an effort for Jess to find out what “real life” beyond the college classroom is like. Then she meets a daredevil new wave guitarist who spins her head like a record, potentially distracting her from her goals. In addition to an awesome backing soundtrack, the book leverages feminist themes, since the women of the ‘80s were the first generation to be told they could “have it all”—love, education, friendships, meaning, sex, careers, happiness, you name it. Except maybe the world wasn’t completely ready for those women to have it all. Which was a tough wall to push down. And this still resonates today.
Suzanne is on the show to talk about the book, what inspired storyline, the characters in the book, her experiences being a women of the ‘80s and more.

Back in June, I had author David Cain on to tell us about his book Infinite Dead: A Daily Guide to Grateful Dead Concert Performances Volume 2: July. I wanted to have him back on to talk about the first volume, which covers all the Dead shows during October. David made some time to come back on and I’m so glad he did. Very few bands deserve an in-depth look at a band’s live show, the Grateful Dead is at the top of that list.
Infinite Dead is a new, groundbreaking guide to Grateful Dead concerts. Authoritative and entertaining, Volume 1 features detailed reviews of every Grateful Dead concert performed in the month of October—over 200 shows, including:
The three-set, acoustic-electric performances at The Warfield in San Francisco and Radio City Music Hall in New York City;Their five-night “final” stand at the Winterland Ballroom in 1974; andThirteen Halloween performances, from their first in 1966 to their last in 1991.Also included in this volume is the band’s revival of “Dark Star” (10/9/89 Hampton Coliseum), “St. Stephen” (10/11/83 Madison Square Garden), and “Turn On Your Love Light” (10/16/81 Melkweg). What better month to talk about The Dead than the month of October!
David Cain has been listening to the music of the Grateful Dead for over forty years, including seeing live performances of the band in twenty-five cities in thirteen states during the course of three decades. David’s writing on music, sports, and other subjects has appeared in publications ranging from Addicted To Noise to USA Today’s Baseball Weekly. David lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Chris MacDonald is a first-time guest to the podcast. He’s the author of the new book Days and Days: A Story about Sunderland's Leatherface and the Ties That Bind. Days and Days weaves together two stories. One is a tale of friendship and self-discovery that occurs during a backpacking adventure through England, Scotland, and Ireland. The other celebrates the highly influential yet underestimated UK band Leatherface, a group that The Guardian called “the greatest British punk band of the modern era.”
Without so much as a single hostel booked, Chris and his friend Jason cross the Atlantic. They sleep in train stations, endure a haunting on top of a volcano in Edinburgh, are driven out of Belfast by the IRA, and witness the mother of all storms. They also find themselves in the rehearsal space of their teenage punk idols, a building steeped in cultural significance for the Sunderland music scene.

Brad Tolinski and Jaan Uhelszki are the authors of MC5 An Oral Biography of Rock’s Most Revolutionary Band. It’s an oral biography of the proto-punk Detroit rockers MC5. Centered around a series of interviews with MC5, their manager, and their inner circle—many of whom are no longer with us—that Tolinski and Uhelszki inherited from CREEM Magazine founding staffer and Mojo's US editor Ben Edmonds before his death, this book presents a genuinely candid, funny, and moving portrait of rock’s most uncompromising and articulate band.

It’s another chapter in The Dialogue Series - A chill ‘n chat with authors, fellow podcasters, musicians, and more. Our guest is Songfacts founder and owner Carl Wiser.
If you love classic rock trivia and love finding out the stories behind your favorite classic rock songs and bands, you probably know about the website Songfacts.com. Songfacts is a music-oriented website that gives you the stories behind songs and lyrics, how and when they were recorded, and so much more. You can search by category like songs about cars, songs inspired by movies, songs inspired by the works of Shakespeare. The list goes on and on. It also has a featured quiz, today’s top 10 facts, artists, lyrics, and categories, and a This Day In Music calendar.
Songfacts also features exclusive articles and interviews. The journalists who work for the site have interviewed thousands of artists and songwriters to get the facts behind the songs, including Greg Prato who has been on the Booked On Rock podcast many times. The site was launched in 1999 by Wiser, a Connecticut rock DJ who created the list as a database to prepare for his radio show before making it a website for all of us classic rock fanatics to visit. It’s one of my original favorite music info sites and I’m not alone. In 2002 it was chosen as a "Yahoo! Pick". The August 2004 issue of Men's Journal listed Songfacts as one of the "100 Best Websites for Guys". USA Weekend has praised it as "a virtual Behind the Music". I reached out to Carl to tell us more about the website, some of his favorite stories he’s found for the site, his favorite books on rock, and ones he would love to be written but haven’t yet. So let’s get down to the facts and talk Songfacts with Carl Wiser!
