  • There has never been a fish on earth that we humans haven’t been fascinated with and simply loved to death. The Romans on their conquest of Europe and the British Isles saw them leaping tall waterfalls and named them “salar”- the leaper . Gaulish Aquitania clans and tribes swore allegiance to the god Salmo rather than to Caesar, and thus perished by the sword . Early cave dwelling Neanderthals drew etchings of salmon at the caves of Lascaux in France near the River VĂ©zĂšre . When cave dwellers needed food for winter , salmon ran up rivers by the thousands all the way up to the Alps and throughout Europe. First Nations Indigenous peoples relied on the runs of salmon in North America /Greenland-and northern Europe. Royalty built castles and large land holdings on Atlantic salmon rivers, which are heavily controlled and coveted even to this day- the royal’s Balmoral estate in Scotland is one such example. Salmon traded equally with gold in Rome during the empire and their wealth as a commodity today is immeasurable to populations and communities around the globe, from the Canadian Maritimes to Iceland/ Scotland/Norway/ Russia . Today, , besides being one of the most highly sought after game fish for fly fishers and commercial fisherman alike, their gastronomical delights appeal to palates and chefs that crave them for their delicious flesh-omega 3 for heart health benefits/Keto diets. But can this insatiable consumption be sustained by what is left in the oceans? Each time you order salmon in the restaurants you are part of the problem; and also part of the solution to saving them, and hopefully putting an end to disease filled farm raised salmon. Nevertheless , they are being driven to endangerment and extinction in some ecosystems. DO YOU ENJOY THE SHOW? PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO LIKE AND REVIEW US ON APPLE AND SPOTIFY! • Progressing in the series from the start of G.E.M. Skues’s passion with the sunken fly, and Sawyer’s effective tight-line maneuvering of his pheasant tail nymphs to sight-fished chalk stream brown trout, regardless of how heretical they were perceived by the dry fly purists, their movements gained extreme momentum because they caught trout - and lots of them! The benthic and mid-strata fly game accounts for the largest pursued sector of our fly dangling sport. Now, the competition born Euro nymphing craze has fueled nymphing into overdrive because it is so effective. Along with fishing traditional soft-hackle and classic wets, more trout are caught and seduced in this venue than any other. In this episode, author and teacher: George Daniel , along with host Supinski , discuss the concepts and origins of the Euro game and discuss misconceptions and critical questions about this very mechanical but effective technique taking North America by storm, which many traditional fly anglers are not fond of. • Series: Below the Meniscus”- The Evolution and Art of Fly Fishing Below the Surface with Nymphs and Wet Flies – A Five Part Series on Hallowed Waters Podcasts

Sawyer sums up chalk stream nymphing it up in the traditional fashion: “Nymph fishing, if you are to be successful, is indeed a matter of being careful. It is not just the business of throwing a nymph at all the likely places and hoping the fish will take it. You turn yourself into a hunter and, with all the keenness of a stalker after a stag, figure wits and your eyesight against the facilities and faculties of the wild fish who are on the feed and continually on the lookout for nymphs moving in the water or below”. • In this brilliant conversion, we analyze and delve deep into every aspect of the tactical presentations that the wet fly can bring today dating back centuries to its humble beginnings. From dead upstream to upstream-and-across, and then to down-and-across wet fly swinging, to finally downstream dead drift presentations in the old school Greased Line and Patent methods, we discuss all the ways the wet fly can stir the aggressive chase and imitative feeding responses. Trout fishing along with swinging wets for Atlantic salmon and steelhead take center stage as guest Davy Wotton and podcast host Matthew Supinski go where no other podcast has gone before to jazz up and put back the glory in a subsurface technique that has lost its appeal to many trout anglers due to the popularity of the nymph- enjoy!

  • A Five Part Series on Hallowed Waters Podcast

“Below the Meniscus”- The Evolution and Art of Fly Fishing Below the Surface with Nymphs and Wet Flies – A Five Part Series on Hallowed Waters Podcast

From its Roman Empire era origins in Macedonia with the Red Fly, and early beginnings with Dame Juliana and her “Treatise” dangling her beautifully concocted flies to fool trout and Atlantic salmon on the River Ver spring creek at her St Alban’s Sopwell Nunnery, is how fly fishing had its humble beginnings. But it was with the modern foundations of Ronalds, Skues, Sawyer, and Cutcliffe in England, on the hallowed chalk streams of the Rivers Itchen and Avon; and North Country, Wales and Dartmoor small freestone rivers, that the nymph and wet fly had their evolution. Thus the going below the meniscus art form has now become the most lethal way of taking trout worldwide with the onset of Euro Nymphing. Three accomplished guest figures of these genres: ex- pat Davy Wotton, George Daniel, and one of England’s iconic chalk stream fly fishing authors, Terry Lawton, along with Hallowed Waters Podcast host and author: Matthew Supinski, discuss the evolutionary magnitude, science, artistic beauty, techniques and gear, fly designs, but often questionable approaches with Euro and competitive fishing, that impacts the trout and fly fisher with these highly effective tactics. The final episode discusses the impact on the angler and how it has transformed them from a fly shop and consumer’s perspective, with a highly skilled Euro nympher and fly shop guru guest: Torrey Collins. Don’t miss this epic documentary podcast on the subject – stay tuned!

  • The greatest memories of my life were learning to trout and salmon fish on small streams with my Dad and Uncle in the Southern Tier of New York and Poland. So many of us as boys and girls, whose passion for the fish still blazes uncontrollably today, rekindle those very fond memories daily in our dreams of that youthful innocence and pure fascination for everything and anything fishing- those days when we couldn't get enough! As we grow more competent and accomplished in our fly fishing, we often too soon forget about those wonderful days of youthful exploration, hunger and enthusiasm for wanting to learn and grasp every aspect of the fly fishing for trout and salmon passion. My young guest from Colorado: Tiki Furimsky, embodies that passion for fishing and nature, which is one of the most beautiful things on God's given earth. In my days, youth were meant to be seen and not heard from. We had to acquire our knowledge by paying our hard luck dues and constantly probing in books at the library; or bugging elders to give us information. Today with social media, Internet videos, having encouraging family mentors, and hopefully this podcast, the future can never be brighter for youth in fishing. Here, we can celebrate the verve and pure excitement that a young man like Tiki brings, which joyfully allows us to reflect on our own journeys'- Amen Tiki!

  • Whew!... the microphones are still smoking after this one! Sometimes some things just go to the breaking point in an age where cynicism, political correctness and fear to speak your opinions overshadow the true essence of the simple beauty and joy of fly fishing for trout and salmon. Hallowed Waters host Matthew Supinski and guest Kirk Deeter: book author and editor of Trout Unlimited’s TROUT Magazine, are not afraid to push the needle and speak the reality of these issues that now, unfortunately, spill into the quiet and soothing sport of fly fishing.  Bottom line: when is enough is enough, and where do you fit in? They discuss all the controversial elements that we now bring to the trout, salmon, and steelhead rivers. Elitism, vanity, and fish pictures/hero shots, obsessions with social media, the influx of river guides and who and what they are, the numbers game: bigger, better, faster, more now! Euro/competitive fishing, respecting home waters vs. destinations, marginal trout streams and rethinking our established paradigms, disruptive individuals and their contributions to making a difference, paying your dues as an angler, books and their importance, laws, and regulations to micro-manage each river system as riverkeepers, searching for Utopia, climate change, indigenous species nativism and which fish belong or don’t belong, foraging for food by a stream, love of brown trout and all wild trout and salmon that still luckily swim
All this in the quest to make you rethink your game and be all about the fish!

  • The 90 years young Dr. Bob Bachman is well known for his Penn State four-year biological study of brown trout from a high-tech tree house on the limestone spring creek of Spruce Creek in Pennsylvania for his thesis paper. He knows them intimately and has fly fished for them and Atlantic salmon around the globe. In addition to his book authorships and fish commissioner of Pennsylvania and Maryland, he has pioneered and jump-started many wild trout fisheries in his tenure, along with his lecturing on them. He and brown trout book author and host: Matthew Supinski, delve deep into this 3-hour discussion of brown trout life survival strategies. The elusive, selective, adaptable, often predictable yet unpredictable natures, migratory and aggressive characteristics of the fish are discussed from a scientific and fisherman’s perspective and compared to other trout species. Many common myths, misconceptions, and basic misinformation about the fish and their daily lives are discussed in detail to help the angler better understand them and use it to improve their approach, fly selection, presentation, and timing for catching the brown trout of a lifetime. Don’t miss this one if you love fishing for browns and other trout in general. Spring creeks from Pennsylvania to the Driftless, to Montana, are discussed, along with the wild trout tailwaters and small freestone streams including the Delaware system and rivers throughout the world.
