  • Writer MARK BOWLES gives us all his precious Infernal Playlist tracks...

Mark is the author of the Goldsmiths Prize nominated novel All My Precious Madness, which was lauded by critics. It's an incredibly funny book - The Guardian compared it to American comedian Bill Hicks - and Mark did not disappoint with a full-on assault on the 1980s in this episode. He talked us through the process of writing the book, welcomed news that an 1980s double act now hate each other, and of course gave us the five tracks he will meet in Hell.

  • We did a spot of enchanting and got writer JOANNE HARRIS to give us the five tracks she will meet in Hell!

Joanne is a prolific writer, having authored over twenty novels, several cookbooks, and a multitude of short stories. (Her latest collection, Maiden, Mother, Crone is out now in paperback, with art by our former damned soul Bonnie Hawkins). Her third novel, Chocolat, is an international bestseller and was adapted into a film starring Juliette Binoche.

She's vocalist and flautist with The Storytime Band, a group she has been in since she was a teenager, and she is also an expert shed wrangler (we talk more about this in the episode too).

The photograph of Joanne in the episode artwork is by Kyte Photography

  • We grill comedian and all-round enthusiast ROBIN INCE for the five tracks he will meet in Hell!

Robin has been a stand-up comedian since the early nineties. He is the author of several books, including I'm A Joke And So Are You and Bibliomaniac, and is the co-creator and co-presenter, with Professor Brian Cox, of BBC Radio 4's The Infinite Monkey Cage. That barely scratches the surface of what Robin does, however: The Guardian called Robin a 'becardiganed polymath' which just about covers it.

Robin talked to us about writing poetry, being in a band, doing comedy in the 90s, vegetarianism, finding his niche, the Scala cinema, meeting George Michael, why he can't drive, AND he gave us seven songs instead of the usual five. He also talked about how he deals with social media pile-ons, and media storms - following this recent interview where he talked about being bullied by Ricky Gervais.

  • Our thirteenth episode sees Welsh critic and broadcaster GARY RAYMOND dragged to Hell and made to give up the five tracks that will torture him for all eternity. Gary is no stranger to trips in the underworld, as his latest book, Abandon All Hope is a version of Dante's inferno set in the world of Welsh literature. He is the author of four other books: two fiction, two non-fiction, including How Love Actually Ruined Christmas, his forensically hilarious take down of the Richard Curtis film. Gary is also the host of the Radio Wales Arts Show, and founder and executive editor of Wales Arts Review.

Gary had a lot to say about his choices, so if ever there was an episode worth subscribing to Patreon for, it's this one - patreons get over twenty five minutes extra chat!
