Professor Paul Spoonley has spent his life studying and researching the path NZ is on. Focussing on demography, migration, birth rates etc. he can shed some light on our expected social change and demography and how this impacts policy decisions at the political level. We ask some hard questions around how NZ will pay the bills for superannuation, rising infrastructure needs and basically gives ourselves a big fright that we are on a very scary path if we don’t have some serious conversations with the entire nation. You do not want to miss this wake up call!

Too many people ignore starting with the low-hanging fruit in front of them and instead try and skip to the million dollar outcome. The downside to this is that people don’t start something, or they get put off by the lack of progress toward their ideal outcome. We then miss all the lessons that taking action teaches us. One of my favourite lessons is that action leads to action.

We are being told that inflation is coming down and will soon be ‘over’. But what if they have it wrong just like when it was ‘a global problem’ or ‘transitory’? What if we have high inflation for some time? Let’s look at how that could happen and then explore what NZ looks like.

It's getting very tricky to pay back debt at the moment. Higher interest rates, higher cost of living and higher taxes. Say what? Yes, a lot of our living costs are soaked up by the lower tax brackets and then our incomes above $48,000 are taxed at 30%+. This means you have to make even more to then pay the tax and then clear the debt. Let's explore how the tax brackets not moving since 2010 has set things up to be very tricky when it comes to repaying debt!

Last week we looked at the brutal reality of the economy slowing down. This week we had GDP data announced at -0.1%. Recession confirmed. But we don’t need to go down that path again. Old news. Let’s turn to a more positive. There are many options compared to the last major economic downturn. Remember the one that we labeled as the GFC back in 2006 to 2009? Well, life looks very different these days. There’s a beautiful thing called the internet.

Bitcoin. It’s at all time highs and it’s all the rage AGAIN! Mikey and Luke invite Darcy Ungaro from Ungaro & Co which Is a Registered Financial Service Provider to discuss this internet coin, thing?! Darcy also hosts ‘The Everyday Investor’ podcast.
This conversation turns into a 2 hour conversation around bitcoin and what the hell it’s all about. We go down many roads: is money broken? Is it an inflation hedge? Are people ‘short’ the NZ dollar? Do home owners understand this but not buy it? Did Luke lose 0.4 of one in Vegas?
If you’ve been interested in Bitcoin this will get your mind spinning.
Note: this isn’t a bitcoin basics podcast but we’ll do one of those soon too.
This isn’t a recommendation to buy Bitcoin either, it’s a discussion around what is going on.

On the 21st of March 2024 we get to find out whether we have been in a receesion since the 1st of July 2023. I think we are and I will explain why. I could be wrong but I doubt it. Unfortunately, the March quarter feels even trickier. But data is what counts, not what I feel so who knows maybe i've got it all wrong. Regardless, it's tricky out there economically and we can still zoom out to get ourselves ready for the next summer as we embrace this economic winter.
