    As mentioned earlier in the episode, if you want to set boundaries in your life, you first need to understand your values. While this is something we go through in great detail in the Next Step Vet Career Accelerator, a quick version of this is to use AI to help you.

    Write down 20 or so words that are important to you in your work and your life. Go through this list and highlight no more than 10 words that resonate the most with you. Then, go on to ChatGPT, and ask it to summarise your 10 words into 4 core values. If you don’t feel ChatGPT has got this right, ask it to retry, or even emphasise words that are most important to you.

    YOUR NEXT STEP: A Daily Check-In

    If you’ve made a goal for the year that is SMART, it’s still likely going to be a big goal. We need to break this down into very small micro-goals.

    How?

    Each day, while taking into account your bigger goal, first, consider whether anything significant has changed between today and your last daily check in, THEN write down 3 priorities for the day.

    If the task takes less than 2 minutes, do it right now.

    So for example, if your bigger goal is “Create a better work-life balance”, it’s too vague and you will not achieve that today, but you could write down and DO, 

    Define SPECIFICALLY what work life balance means to me and write a SMART goal for 2024.Write down and discuss with those closest to me, what are my non-negotiablesContact the boss to discuss a change in work schedule.

    A daily check-in will allow you to take little nibbles at a bigger, seemingly undefinable, goal.

    Nigel is an advertising executive who lost his job with four young kids and decided to remain unemployed for a year to spend time with his family and figure out what work-life balance meant to him.

    He's also done a wildly popular Ted talk on work-life balance, authored multiple books including: “Fat 40 and Fired”, hosts his own podcast, and speaks around the world about his experience, including at veterinary conferences.

    YOUR NEXT STEP: Define What Work-Life Balance Means to You.

    Privately ask yourself, honestly, what type of person do I want to be? What type of life do I want to lead? What type of legacy do I want to leave ?

    Then ask:

    What type of person am I? 

    What type of life am I leading?

    What type of legacy will I leave, if I carry on this way? 

    Identify if there is a gap between those two things and finally ask yourself:

    Am I going to do anything about the gap? 

    As Nigel says, decide don't slide. 

    And remember if you want to do anything about the gap, but are scared of making change, start small.

    Even if it's just one small thing a month over time, you will head in the right direction.

    Whether your dream career is becoming a clinic manager or a conservationist, chances are, there will be physical and virtual networks that already exist that you can get involved in. Participating in existing networks allows you to explore career options with people who are ALREADY living and breathing it. 

    It is also an environment with less pressure than a job interview, so you’ll probably find people are more honest about the pros and cons of a company or industry than they might be in more formal situations. The best way to explore future career possibilities is with a curious and open mindset. 

    Find out where people who are interested in the same career opportunities as you hang out. Are there online forums you could contribute to, speaker events you could attend or experts you could follow on LinkedIn? 

    Once you start being proactive and taking action you will find that one thing leads to another and in a relatively short space of time you can make a lot of progress in building a network of people who will help you with future roles.

    The best advice I can give within these networks is to offer to help someone in an area that interests you. Networking is just people helping people, and so the more people you seek to help, the more opportunities you will be creating for yourself.

    You went into this profession because of an interest in science, a love of animals and nature, but if there's any passion in this current job, it's whining.

    Being a vet is supposed to be a dream job, so why are you unhappy?

    If you stay in your current position, you'll likely end up living a life of regret.

    Wondering, "What if?"

    What if I had changed jobs?

    What if I had tried something new?

    What if I even considered, changing careers?

    How do you avoid living a life of regret?

    There’s something you want to do. Maybe you want to try something out of your comfort zone. Maybe you want to quit your job. Or maybe you just want to have a conversation with your manager and make some small, but realistic changes to your job description.

    What’s getting in the way? Fear.

    Introducing: Fear Setting.

    Based on Tim Ferris’ advice, he recommends:

    Define: 

    List out everything you fear about the idea of taking action.

    Prevent: 

    List ways you could reduce the likelihood of each of the worst-case scenarios from happening

    Repair: 

    List the ways you could repair the damage if the worst came to worst. 

    Benefits:

    Write down all the positive benefits of even an attempt or partial success at taking action.

    Consequences:

    Consider all the consequences of inaction including financial, emotional, and physical. It can be helpful to look at both the short-term AND long-term consequences.

    Action:

    Finally, write down the action you will take TODAY, to take action in SPITE of fear.

    The work is unrewarding.

    Your clients are demanding.

    And you’re reaching the end of your days drained of energy.

    You NEED to take action in your career, but you’re not even sure where to start.

    You think about changing jobs after YET another exhausting day of work, might look up jobs online, or join groups on social media that give career tips, but then maybe you get distracted. 

    You watch a funny video on social media, and before you know it, that thought was forgotten, and another day has passed.

    Do you know that countdown that goes off whenever a rocket ship is about to launch?

    Whenever you consider taking action, what you’ll normally do is ponder options, daydream, get distracted, and possibly do nothing.

    Anytime you consider taking action, instead of thinking about it. Do it. 

    How?

    Next time you’re thinking about taking action in your career, imagine the rocket ship countdown going off in your head.

    When you reach one, do something. It’s an effective way to take action. You won’t always get it RIGHT, and it is still helpful to seek guidance from a career coach like myself, but doing SOMEthing is ALWAYS better than nothing.

    There are three easy ways you can practice confidence.

What you're actually going to say, at least three times before you actually say it. Practice little and often. Spot opportunities to practice in low-risk situations.Help people with their confidence. There are areas of your work where you're more experienced than others. Helping others build their confidence in thee areas will help you build confidence in yourself.

    There's a level of comfort in being a clinical vet. You mostly know what you're doing, it pays you comfortably, and you have friends in the industry.

    But imagine doing this job for another 30 years?

    In the same journal as your Emotions Journal, write down one thing you're grateful for, each and every day. Aim to journal something you're genuinely grateful for that particular day. Not something you feel you "should" be grateful for, such as a roof over your head or good health.

    Research has shown that people who count their blessings, tend to be happier and less depressed. Gratitude takes time, but will improve your health your relationships, and increase your resilience. All important foundations for designing a career that works for you.

    But how can you do this without losing your identity as a veterinarian?

    How do you handle the change in career, without a change in identity?

    Overcoming the expectations - and maybe even disappointment - of family and friends.

    Naomi took an unusual turn in her career as a vet, going from a respectable job as an equine vet in the racing industry, to a relatively obscure and less prestigious profession.

    For someone who had always wanted to be a vet her entire life. She experienced doubts at an unusual age - before she'd even gone to university.

    Her parents and mentors quickly quelled that doubt. She went to vet school and ended up working for over 10 years and the equine industry, before rediscovering her passion and a completely new industry - podcasting.

    She now runs the international woman's podcast awards as well as hosting her own podcast, working with Amazon, and doing the occasional bit of vet work.

    But before Naomi got there, she also struggled with her identity as a veterinarian.

    What Naomi means by 'creating space' in order to figure out what you're meant to be doing next. Why networking is not a necessary evil, but something you should look forward to doing, if you're serious about changing careers.     Find a way to reduce your hours at work. Ideally locum so that you're in control of your own hours.

    If this isn't an option, tell your work, you need to reduce your hours.

    It's your life and if you're too busy and stressed to allow the time and energy to spend on your career development you will never find the space to do it.

    You've got to create space for yourself.

    I would recommend reducing your hours of work by at least eight hours a week. This will allow more time for rest and relaxation and mean you can spend at least two hours a week on your career development.

    Find a time of day you think it will be most achievable for you to consistently practice meditation.

    We suggest either first thing in the morning at your lunch break or just after returning home from work, but whatever time of day you choose to do it, the best way to make sure this becomes a habit - before it's even a habit - is to tie it into something you do without consciously thinking about.

    Whatever you choose, the only way it's going to become a daily habit is by making it so easy to remember, it will be hard to forget.

    A bonus tip, if you celebrate at the end of each meditation with a fist pump or another celebration, your brain will learn it as being rewarded for the behaviour. Within two months, this should become a habit. Much like you brush your teeth without really thinking about it.

    Purchase a journal that's calendarized, so you can write in it daily.

    At the end of each day, write down three emotions that come up during the day and why those emotions come up.

    Place it somewhere, you won't forget it, so it becomes a daily.

    I place it on my bedside table so that when I go to bed, I won't forget it.

    You might find the task a bit repetitive and maybe even wonder what you're getting out of the.

    Maybe you'll start writing down the same thing, and it might start to feel like a waste of time.

    But the more you do the exercise, the better you'll get at it.

    One of the most important parts of the career journey is going to be increasing self-awareness - by celebrating your successes, you'll be rewiring your brain to spend more energy focusing on the positive.

    How will this help you in your career? By consistently celebrating success, it will become clear to you what specific things you are good at - at work - and what you enjoy doing it.

    This will be helpful later on in Next Step Vet, when we start to consider future career options for you.
