  • Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of the biggest bombs in film history. On this week’s show, we welcome Michael Mann back to the podcast and discuss his 1999 biographical drama - The Insider. The film is a fictionalized telling of whistleblower Jeffery Wigand’s dealings with “Big Tobacco.” The Insider was praised by both the audience and the critics and was even nominated for seven Academy Awards. However, this did not translate to financial success and the film went home with zero Oscar statues. Do we agree with the critical response, or is The Insider a Bomb? Download to find out.

The Insider is directed by Michael Mann and stars Al Pacino, Russell Crowe, Christopher Plummer, Diane Venora, Philip Baker Hall, Lindsay Crouse, and Debi Mazar

  • Welcome to Not A Bomb Presents The Classics, a series where Jose and Sammy join Troy and Brad to discuss some of the greatest films ever. In the second edition, the gang travels down the river and uses their pretty mouths to talk about 1972’s Deliverance. Consider one of the great American films of all time; Deliverance brought the world dueling banjos and squealing like a pig and hunk Burt Reynolds. However, it also brought one of the more thought-provoking, transgressive thrillers of all time. How well does this 1972 classic hold up? Listen and find out!

We hope you join us on this upcoming journey as Not A Bomb takes on The Classics!

  • Welcome back to another exciting episode of Not A Bomb Podcast. This is the podcast where we re-examine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history.

Oh man, do we have a treat for you! This week’s show is all about Cannon films, and you can’t talk about Cannon without Austin Trunick. Austin is the author of two excellent retrospective books - The Cannon Film Guide: Vol 1 and 2. If you have ever wanted to know something about Cannon Films, Austin is the guy to talk to. While Cannon created a ton of cult favorites, they also dipped their toes into some prestige storytelling. We decided to go a bit more “highbrow” with this week’s choice and are discussing 1985’s Runaway Train. This Academy Award nominated film started as a screenplay by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and was passed around by several Hollywood executives. The story of two escaped convicts who become stuck on a…you guessed it…runaway train finally found a home with Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus.

Austin brings so much insight to this film and we are super excited he joined us for this week’s conversation. So, sit back, relax, and learn all about one of the best stories to come out of The Cannon Group, Runaway Train.

Runway Train is directed by Andrei Konchalovsky and stars John Voight, Eric Roberts, Rebecca De Mornay, Kyle T. Heffner, John P. Ryan, T.K. Carter, and Kenneth McMillian.

Be sure to check out The Cannon Film Guide: Vol 1 and Vol 2, or please support your local bookstore and ask them to order it for you.

  • Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of the biggest bombs in film history. In this week’s episode, we discuss one of the biggest cinematic flops for 20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment, 2019’s Dark Phoenix. This is the fourth installment of the prequel films and the 12th installment in the X-Men film series. Dark Phoenix had all the trademarks of a bomb such as numerous re-shoots based on test screenings, studio mergers, uninterested actors, a first-time director, shifting management, and poor marketing. Do all these factors make Dark Phoenix a bomb? Were audiences, critics, and comic book fans too harsh on this version of “The Dark Phoenix Saga?” Download the episode and hear our thoughts!

Special thanks to our good friend Jose from Watch / Skip+ for stopping by and helping out with the discussion!

Dark Phoenix is directed by Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, and Jessica Chastain

Make sure to check out Jose on Watch/Skip+ and make sure to drop them a review!

Also, James, friend of the show, lost his beloved dog - Penny a little bit ago. If you would like to donate to the GoFundMe, please do so and help out a great guy during this most difficult time.

  • Welcome to Not A Bomb, your favorite podcast about some of the biggest cinema bombs in movie history. On this episode, we’re thrilled to welcome Jose, host of the newly revamped Watch/Skip+ podcast. Our focus this week is 2017’s action thriller, American Assassin, or, as someone labeled the film, “baby’s first Bourne.” But hey, this episode gives us an excuse to talk about Dylan O’Brien and mention the fantastic film Love and Monsters again. American Assassin starts with one heck of a punch, but does it have what it takes to captivate today’s modern audience? How does the film stack up against powerhouse franchises like James Bond or Mission Impossible? Before we get too deep into our analysis of the film, we spend a little time exploring the essential elements that either make or break an action-packed cinematic experience.

American Assassin is directed by Michael Cuesta and stars Dylan O’Brien, Michael Keeton, Sanaa Lathan, Shiva Negar, David Suchet, Navid Negahban, Scott Adkins, and Taylor Kitsch.

  • Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of the biggest cinema bombs of all time. In this episode, we welcome back to the show Mike McGranaghan, film critic at The Aisle Seat. Put on your detective hats and rush to the crime scene. What was the crime? In this case, an experimental film from 1985, Clue. Based on the popular board game, Clue gathers all our favorite playing pieces into a mansion and, of course, a murder occurs. The filmmakers pulled a “William Castle” on the audience and came up with an interesting gimmick, three different endings to a movie (and each ending was shown in a different location). Join us as we try to figure out who did it, with what, and in what room. Oh…and we do spend a little time discussing some of the greatest film gimmicks in cinematic history.

Clue is directed by Jonathan Lynn and stars Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren.

Mike McGranaghan, is a member of the Critics Choice Association and the Online Film Critics Society. His reviews appear weekly on the radio stations of Sunbury Broadcasting Corporation. His work also regularly appears at Ranker. He is the author of two books, Straight-Up Blatant and My Year of Chevy: One Guy's Journey Through the Filmography of Chevy Chase. • Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history. On this week’s episode, we once again find ourselves in sci-fi town with the 2015 space opera film Jupiter Ascending. Boasting a budget north of $200M, Jupiter Ascending left general audiences bewildered by the lack of character development, terrible script, nonexistent performances, dodgy CGI, and whatever Eddie Redmayne was doing on screen. This film is a misfire on all aspects. One starts to wonder just how it all went wrong and how The Wachowskis could go from The Matrix to a dog-man “surfing” with gravity boots. Woof!

Jupiter Ascending is directed by The Wachowskis and stars Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, and Douglas Booth.

  • In 2024, Breaking Brad was to rest, but a new show arose out of the ashes like a phoenix. That new show is Not A Bomb Presents: The Classics, a series where Jose and Sammy join Troy and Brad again to discuss some of the greatest films ever. On the first edition, we come out of the gate discussing one of the greatest films of all time - Citizen Kane. This quasi-biographical film is a monumental task to discuss, but the guys all bring a unique perspective to the conversation. Trust me, no one was broken after talking about such a powerful piece of cinema.

We hope you join us on this upcoming journey as Not A Bomb takes on The Classics!

  • Welcome back to Not A Bomb podcast! This is the show where we re-examine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. In this episode, discuss the 1990 comedy (??) - The Bonfire of the Vanities. Coming from the legendary director Brian De Palma, The Bonfire of the Vanities attempts to adapt the best-selling novel of the same name. However, problem after problem caused this film to fail at the box office and get hammered by the critics. The problems were so epic, a film critic wrote a bestselling book about all the behind-the-scenes drama, “The Devil’s Candy: The Anatomy of a Hollywood Fiasco.” As a bonus feature, we sneak in a quick review of a 2015 documentary on the director himself, De Palma.

We are excited to welcome John from And Now Something A Little Bit Different YouTube Channel to help break down this utter failure.

The Bonfires of the Vanities is directed by Brian De Palma and stars Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, Morgan Freeman, Kim Cattrall, Saul Rubinek, and F. Murray Abraham.

  • Welcome back to Not A Bomb podcast! This is the show where we re-examine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. In this episode, we discuss a film with nine-foot Egyptian Gods played by generic white people who bleed gold and turn into Voltron-like robots. Yes, you read that sentence correctly. Our little podcast finally tackles 2016's fantasy action film - Gods of Egypt. This one…well…is a head-scratcher. For one, it's directed by Alex Proyas, an individual responsible for classics such as The Crow and Dark City. But he has Knowing in his filmography. Secondly, the film is penned by the duo known for Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter, and Morbius. Not really a winning combination. Maybe against all odds, this one will be something watchable…right, right? Download and find out!

Gods of Egypt is directed by Alex Proyas and stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Gerard Butler, Brenton Thwaites, Chadwick Boseman, Elodie Yung, Courtney Eaton, Rufus Sewell, and Geoffrey Rush.

  • Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of the biggest cinematic bombs. This week, we shift our focus from Hollywood to Hong Kong to discuss 2021’s action thriller - Limbo. Sammy from the GGTMC is back to assist in the discussion and lend his critical eye to this…here we go…cinematic masterpiece. Yep, you don’t have to guess this week if we like the film. We love it. Look, everyone on the podcast highly recommends seeing this film and our discussion spoils the whole thing. The film is definitely made for an adult crowd and tackles some pretty rough topics. However, if you’re a fan of films like Blade Runner and Seven, you’re going to really appreciate this movie. Please, go see the film and then come back to listen the show. The podcast will be here waiting for you.

Limbo is directed by Soi Cheang and stars Gordon Lam, Cya Liu, Mason Lee, and Hiroyuki Ikeuchi.

  • Welcome back to Not A Bomb podcast! This is the show where we go back and re-examine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this episode, we keep the sci-fi training rolling as we discuss 2016’s Midnight Special. This film highlights why the sci-fi genre can be so enthralling and is one of our favorite genres to discuss. Even though critics seemed to adore this little movie, Midnight Special didn’t get much attention from the general public when it released in theaters. Trust us, Midnight Special has amazing worldbuilding, interesting characters, thrilling action set pieces, oscar caliber performances, and so much more. WARNING…if you are interested in the film, and you should be, just know that we discuss the ending and it’s possible meanings.

Midnight Special is directed by Jeff Nichols and stars Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Durst, Adam Driver, Jaeden Martell, and Sam Shepard.

  • Happy New Year film fans! On the first episode of 2024, we are ringing in the new year with a discussion of one of the more recent underseen science fiction films - Prospect. Made for roughly $4 million, Prospect, could be best described as a sci-fi/western, with fantastic world building and powerful performances. Sadly, with even a tiny budget, Prospect failed to make an impact at the box office. Thankfully, Vinegar Syndrome released an amazing 4K edition complete with some amazing special features. With the help of this podcast, maybe Prospect will find a second life. Also, we spend a little time talking about our listeners’ choices for the best/worst films of 2023.

Prospect is directed by Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell and stars Pedro Pascal, Sophie Thatcher, and Jay Duplass.

  • As the end of 2023 approaches, Not A Bomb has decided to go out with a bang. On this week’s show, we discuss not one but two bombs by the same director, Guy Ritchie. This was a rough year at the box office for Mr. Ritchie. Both Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and Guy ritchie’s The Covenant didn’t make their production budget back during their theatrical run. Critics definately liked one movie over the other. And audiences, who did see the films, liked both.

We couldn’t take on two films in one show without some help. Nate, friend and family member, jumps on to share his thoughts on Guy Ritchie’s filmography and help us decide if these two films deserve more attention.

If that wasn’t enough, we also reveal our 5 best and worst films of the year. Brad followed the instructions. Troy did his own thing. Nate gives everybody a shock with his take on Jackie Chan’s Ride On. You are going to get a lot of recommendations from these lists!

We also want to take a minute and thank all of you for an amazing year and all of the wonderful support. We are truly humbled by our community and appreciate all the feedback.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Harnett, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, Eddie Marsan, and Hugh Grant.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Dar Salim, Antony Starr, Alexander Ludwig, Emily Beecham, and Jonny Lee Miller.

Also, this is the last week to let Not A Bomb know your best/worst films of 2023. Head over to Not A Bomb and submit your choice!

  • Welcome back to Not A Bomb Presents: Breaking Brad. The premise is simple. Troy, Sammy from GGTMC, and Jose from Watch/Skip+ pick some of the worst films imaginable to see if they can break Brad. In this final episode of the series, the war on Christmas must be stopped and the only person worthy is Kirk Cameron and his ego. That’s right, the gang celebrates the Christmas season with Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas. Look, the film is bad. Santa Clause vs. the Martians is a masterpiece compared to this religious propaganda. You will, however, enjoy hearing just how broke everybody is after a year long experiment of bad films. Brad also gives his finally rankings for this season of Breaking Brad. Sadly, the series is taking a much-needed break. Don’t worry! We have a great series coming next year with the same crew. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays - except to you Kirk Cameron. You’re in time out!

  • Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of Hollywood’s biggest bombs. This month, Not A Bomb is examining some of 2023’s biggest box office failures and critically lambasted films! Once again, Brad’s shenanigans are back and he’s breaking all the rules. On this week’s episode, the guys welcome back Jose from Watch/Skip+ to discuss the very divisive film from 2022 that didn’t get a wide release until 2023, Babylon. This three hour epic is an ode to Hollywood during the transition from silent films to talkies (imagine Singing in the Rain but much darker in tone). Notable for its All-Star cast, Babylon failed to make an impact at the box-office and divided most critics. Does Babylon’s 3-hour runtime deserve your attention? Is it too obnoxious, trangressive, and pretensious for the average film fan? Or maybe this is a visually majestic tragedy that will soon become a cult classic? Download and listen!

Babylon is directed by Damein Chazelle and stars Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, P.J. Bryne, Lukas Haas, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel, Katherine Waterston, and Tobey Maguire.

As the year comes to an end, Not A Bomb wants to know your best/worst films of 2023. Head over to Not A Bomb and submit your choice!

Also, longtime friend of Troy and Brad, Michael Neel, released his movie - Infinite Santa 8000 via Synapse Films. Do yourself a favor and order your copy before they are gone.

  • Hey there, movie fans! Welcome back to your favorite podcast about Hollywood’s biggest bombs. This month, Not A Bomb is examining some of 2023’s biggest box office disasters and critically lambasted films! Buckle up because we’ve got a treasure trove of cinematic calamities to dissect and explore!

In this week’s episode, we’re thrilled to have Action Film Historian Brandon Brentley on the show! Brandon has worked with numerous distribution companies on their Hong Kong releases, such as Criterion, 88 Films, Shout Factory, Eureka, and Arrow Video. Yes, he’s been providing commentary on the best of Hong Kong’s cinematic fury and he’s kind of a big deal! Once again, we get to talk about Jackie Chan, one of greatest stuntmen of all time in one of his most self-reflective, personal films - Ride On. Marketed as a “Jackie Chan comedy with horse-fu,” Ride On barely made a splash in the domestic box-office and was pretty much ignored in the international market. We think it’s safe to say 2 out of the 3 hosts had a profound reaction to the film.

Ride On is directed by Larry Yang and stars Jackie Chan, Lui Haocun, Guo Qilin, Wu Jing, Joey Young, Yu Rongguang, Andy On, and Shi Yanneng.
