  • Cath and Jeremy Brown are the couple behind the beloved design brand Feldspar Studio (@feldsparstudio), known for its useful everyday items, made properly by the careful hands of master craftspeople in their two workshops in England.

The couple talk to Anne, who supported them early on as a consultant, about their early careers, how the two met (a very romantic story) and explain how they left London for Devon on a whim after Cath got pregnant with their first son, Milo. They also relay to Anne how they got their hand into ceramics and how, not much after, they decided to turn this creative experiment into a bona fide company.

Jeremy is used to wearing many different hats, with a background in art and design from Goldsmith’s College and an expertise in woodwork from an earlier time. He also worked for the UN and later the International Trade Center (part of WTO) with ethical and sustainable artisans workshops in remote communities. Meanwhile Cath went from the art world to architecture, building schools in her last job.

Both are obsessed with having total control over the design, production and packaging of their products, and the pair, balanced in their skill sets, explain how they split the work between themselves but ultimately make all their decisions together.

Their famously ‘wonky’ products are considered designs, as Cath explains, made mindfully for superior enjoyment — like the dimples in their coffee mugs or the perfect pour of their teapot. The two are equally excited at the idea to continue to grow the product range while committing to work with labour-intensive crafts that are currently endangered in the UK.

With the goal of continuing to make things by hand, the Feldspar duo offer a fresh approach to old materials, creating designs to outlive the owner — true objects for life.

Jeremy and Cath also tell Anne about the importance of regularly reevaluating their lifestyle as the company grows, so that they stay true to their priorities: spending time with each other and with their kids.

Cath then shares the story of her Neapolitan great-great-grandpa’s cookbook and chats to Anne about the studio’s upcoming collaborations with artist Tanya Ling.

The couple end by revealing their dream future for Felspar, a holistic experience which they jokingly describe as ‘Google, but for making things’.

A joyful and insightful conversation with an inspiring entrepreneurial duo. Happy listening!

She talks about how she learned the power of agency from her mother, who taught her and her siblings, with a ‘scared-straight’ approach, how to make choices to take life into the direction they intended. The oldest of four, Rahshaana admits that her choices were also a potential blueprint for her siblings, and how a desire to influence them positively led her to pursue an early career in science.

After receiving her BA in Biophysical Chemistry from Dartmouth College and an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin, Rahshaana talks about how she combined her passion for science and business skills, which led her to pursue a fifteen-year career in Marketing and Business Development for medical device and life science companies.

Rahshaana then explains how an accident directed her towards yoga — Forrest Yoga specifically. Able to heal herself through this practice, she tells Anne how she made the choice to certify as a teacher and with the support of an amazing manager was able to do so in parallel to her career. She continued to pursue a personal study in meditation, mindfulness and compassion practices to deepen her own growth and to empower others to cultivate well-being and resilience.

Reaching the present, Anne asks Rahshaana to talk through her journey that led her to the Nalanda Institute in Contemplative Science (which is, incidentally, how the two became acquainted). Rahshaana talks in depth about the programs she teaches in Compassion-Based Resilience Training (CBRT). And who needs to explore CBRT? Probably everyone, according to her, because, as we can probably all attest, ‘human-ing’ is hard.

To conclude, the pair discusses how the power of compassion and mindfulness combined can help people access emotions, including difficult emotions, and become resilient to feelings like discomfort. And they talk about the importance of intimacy — a word that can describe the connection we can hope to have with the body — as a form of ultimate intelligence.

A profound and inspiring conversation. Happy listening!

  • Etienne Salborn is the founder of SINA (the Social Innovation Academy), a talent campus in Uganda. He also serves as a lecturer for social entrepreneurship at the Management Center Innsbruck and the ESCP Business School, resource person for the Asian Productivity Organization and facilitator for the ChangemakerXchange. His expertise and leadership have earned him recognition as an “AACSB Influential Leader 2021” and he was named an Innovation Ecosystem Builder Fellow by MIT D-lab in 2018.

The Berlin-born social entrepreneur has had quite the life journey since taking off for Uganda at age 18 for a volunteering community service (an option to eschew the German military service). In his conversation with Anne, he tells her about how he set up his first and then second non-profit organisations after he found his life’s mission: to support the empowerment of marginalised youth in rural Uganda.

We discuss his very special master’s program in Austria, called Peace, Development, Security and International Conflict Transformation, and how it led him into a journey of self-discovery and experiential learning (which included simulation of a conflict war zone as well as mindfulness, meditation and contemplation on Austria’s mountains in minus 27 degree Celsius).

Etienne explains how SINA came to be, what three pillars underpin the project and how young students, or SINA scholars, are onboarded and grow their roles within the community, built as a self-organised system that runs on what the concept of ‘freesponsibility’ (freedom + responsibility).

With people living and working in the community, Etienne explains how they have used models from Nonviolent Communication, holacracy, and his master’s program facilitation tools to help navigate change, conflict and feedback — something of a challenge in a flat structure of 60+ individuals.

SINA’s goal is to help young people unleash their potential, create their own change and build their own social enterprises. Etienne shares how SINA has grown into a replicable model, building a new generation of social entrepreneurs who are solving challenges for society and the environment. With more than 12 communities across Uganda and other African countries, Etienne talks about what’s next, how we can support, engage with and even visit SINA, and why we should all explore the power of community.

A unique interview with a thoughtful and impact-driven changemaker. Enjoy!

Broadly speaking, Anaïs is dedicated to societal transformation through personal transformation, social equity and systems change.

In this interview, Anaïs tells Anne about how a trip abroad at age 15 opened up her perspective as to how a human life could unfold. She also shares the twists and turns that led her to study many different subjects, from business to comparative religious and Islamic studies, before landing herself a job in management consulting.

She talks about seeking to serve and contribute to society, and how she went from her consulting role in business engineering and enterprise architecture to her involvement in the climate crisis response, becoming Swiss director and co-leader of Climate-KIC, the largest public-private partnership to foster innovation and entrepreneurship for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Anaïs also shares how she went on to leave Climate-KIC to co-found the non-profit Scaling4Good, which aims to connect impact initiatives and institutions who are trying to do good to enable greater and faster systems change.

As Anne and Anaïs are both coaches and mindfulness and yoga teachers, they discuss the modalities of coaching, the search for meaning and purpose and how we all have this innate desire to do something good. Anaïs writes regularly on the topics of values and leadership, and offers her thoughts about the disconnection between individual and collectively held values.

Anaïs also shares with Anne her favourite tips to connect with nature, culminating with the question: Who are you that I am also, and who am I that you are too?

  • Gemma Colao is the co-founder and creative director of OTO (which rhymes with ‘photo’), a UK brand that was created to answer her desire to share the wonder of CBD with as many people as possible through luxurious products and meaningful experiences.

Gemma first talks to Anne about her fashion career, as a knitwear designer, and how she was drawn to design and ready-to-wear, inspired by her artist grandmother’s bold bohemian style. She started her career with an internship at DKNY, and after graduating from Central St Martins, Gemma worked for the likes of Clements Ribeiro before turning to Esprit and Marks & Spencers, among others.

Gemma explains how she jumped on the opportunity to move to the US thanks to her husband. She tells Anne how the pace combined with the workload from her design job took a toll on her and how, sleep-deprived, she was battling anxiety and burnout — that is, until she found CBD. After a colleague made the suggestion to give it a try, Gemma shares what a revelation (or revolution, perhaps) this was for her. Thankfully, she felt the effects of CBD quickly, improving first the quality of her sleep, which in turn lessened her anxiety. This of course had a huge impact on the quality of her life.

Inspired as she was by the possibilities offered by CBD, Gemma recounts how she and her husband then set out to open the first legal online dispensary in California. Later on, the couple returned to the UK to find that the quality of CBD products offered in that market was much lower, so Gemma explains how she saw this as an opportunity and that’s when they decided to create OTO.

Anne herself admits knowing very little about CBD, so the two talk about the nitty gritty of what makes OTO CBD products effective and why they are formulated to feel luxurious but are also backed by science. Gemma shares her vision to build a brand that people can trust, and one that focuses on efficacy as well as experiences and moments, whether from the brand’s sleep drops, skincare or their new spa products and beverages (OTO made the first CBD bitters in the world). Anne also asks Gemma to speak to OTO’s recent acquisition of the wellness group South West Brands and how she hopes that the newly formed OTO Group becomes a portfolio of global female-focused wellness brands.

Finally, the two exchange on their rituals, gratitude, journaling practises and what keeps Gemma grounded and balanced day to day, busy as she is with OTO and her two little boys at home.

A rich and engaging interview with a highly creative entrepreneur. Happy listening!

  • Deep Kailey (@IamDeepKailey) is a creative director, consultant and the artistic director of ‘Without Shape Without Form’ (WSWF), an interactive travelling exhibition that bridges the gap between art, spirituality and mental health, approached from the lens of Sikh wisdom.

Prior to that, Deep held roles at Dazed and Confused, with Kim Jones and at Vogue India, and at one time was the fashion director for Tatler magazine.

It’s in the context of fashion that Anne Muhlethaler, host of OOTC, became acquainted with Deep, when she was starting out as fashion editor for Vogue India in London.

In this conversation, the two start with a tale of Deep asking herself ‘the big questions’ as a girl, after the passing of her mother. They talk about her journey through art school, fashion, how she found her way to Dazed and Confused, under Nichola Formichetti, and later her work as managing director for designer Kim Jones, who’s now at Dior and Fendi, respectively, as head of mens and womenswear.

They move on to cover the story of how Deep found herself reconnecting with her Sikh roots in her late twenties, and she explains the meaning of the ‘game’ and the work of Simran, the focused practise for the mind (which sounds like but isn’t the same as meditation) that guided her to discover her own purpose and self-alignment.

After cultivating this spiritual practise for many years, Deep has been working with a team of volunteers on WSWF, first an exhibition and now turned arts organisation, which offers visitors an experience that bridges the gap between art, spirituality and mental health. The project is meant to transcend cultural, social and racial barriers, and explores its subjects through Sikh teachings, bringing them into a contemporary context.

Anne and Deep also discuss personal values, the dark power of gossip, the meaning of connection (and its opposite), and compare metaphors of inner landscapes and inner abodes, self-concept and safety.

A very spiritual, resourced and open conversation. Happy listening!

  • Kamil Tyebally is the founder of Early Spring NYC, a company that works at the crossroads between events, culture, connection and marketing, to create immersive brand events.

Kamil’s is an unusual story, and he starts by telling Anne how he went from Singapore to Myanmar to Thailand in his teens, and how he first discovered that life experience could match academic performance.

His early passion for taking pictures led him to follow a path in photo-journalism in NYC at first, and Kamil explains about how his father sparked his adventurous spirit, which led him to meet his future self in Mexico City and develop two book projects that took him to Algiers (Algeria) and later to Baghdad (Iraq).

Coming back to NYC, Kamil landed in marketing and business development. But, he tells Anne how he was set on getting a job at the innovative Fake Love company. This mission took him on a journey to explore culture, connection, technology and empathy — where, at the end, he found himself as the co-creative for immersive experiential events at Fake Love.

Kamil’s artistic leanings and his keenness to find what makes people tick is neatly encompassed when he talks with Anne about creating value beyond transaction and sparking moments of connections at his events. Kamil launched his company, Early Spring, just before the start of the pandemic with the objective (and the tagline) of ‘engineering serendipity’ — which he describes as finding what people need before they even know they need it themselves.

The two close the conversation by discussing vulnerability, instinct and finding a connection to their roots. A wide-ranging and fascinating interview with a thoughtful entrepreneur. Happy listening!

  • Tal Zur is a trained industrial designer who lectures at the Holon Institute of Technology. She is also the co-founder of Iota Project, a Tel Aviv-based lifestyle start-up with the goal to create social impact through design. At the core of this enterprise is an ancient technology, or rather, a technique: crochet.

In this interview, Tal talks to Anne about how she came to study industrial design, curatorship and patisserie (an eclectic combination), how she chose to move away from working in fashion and, while she was considering the next steps in her career, how she had a serendipitous connection with her co-founder, Shula Mozes, the one to brainstorm the idea of crochet as the basis for their social mission.

Tal explains how industrial design is like a methodology and how she became inclined to approach crochet in a modern way, all the while drawing on old Greek doilies as inspiration. As she tells it, crochet can be communicated and replicated like one could a piece of music, and that’s how Iota Project is able to share design drawings with women and collaborate with skilled communities over several countries.

Anne and Tal also discuss the meaning and importance of slow design, and how Iota Project aims to create sustainable social impact by being a platform for change, which includes putting the opportunity in the hands of the consumers, designers, architects and other entities that will engage with their products.

The two finish by talking about how Tal approaches her life as a mother (of three!) while being an entrepreneur, the importance of trust and not micromanaging when working remotely, and how teaching in front of design students twice a week is a bubble that keeps her feeling creatively connected.

A very inspiring interview with a compelling and fascinating woman. Enjoy!

  • Cécile Duranton is the managing director of Time for the Planet, a trail-blazing non-profit citizen fund detecting and financing climate change innovations.

Before joining Time for the Planet, Cécile trained as an agronomy engineer, as she is passionate about nature, animals, agriculture and food systems.

The young French woman tells Anne how she left home at 14 to attend a specialist highschool to continue to ride and train horses, and later to intern in the UK and in Vietnam. Cécile thrived in her travels, and shares how she discovered that bonds can be formed even when one doesn’t speak the local language (though clearly she loves trying). As a business developer for different French companies, she has worked extensively across South East Asia. Living the expat lifestyle, Cécile discusses why she chose to learn new languages — to better understand the culture and build strong relationships and an international network at the same time.

Cécile explains how she chose to study in Brazil, and later in New Zealand, and how she ended up turning from the engineering side to the business development side of the industry, changing the arc of her career. She also tells Anne how she got involved in sustainability and, in particular, climate change before making it her first mission.

Cécile designs and executes the international strategy of Time for the Planet, so Anne asks her about the mission of the business, how they inspire action in citizens, how they built their model to have maximum impact, why they have a low threshold to entry (you can become a shareholder for as little as 1 euro) and how changing their communication around climate change transformed their business from doom-inaction model to one charged with hope, energy and powering individual action.

A fascinating and motivating conversation. Happy listening!

  • Kate Socatiyanurak is one of the co-founders of Merandi, a startup based in Bangkok, Thailand, focusing on luxury bag inserts and accessories crafted out of Thai silk.

The twenty-five-year-old entrepreneur talks to Anne about her journey from boarding school to a masters at London School of Economics to content creation for luxury brands once she was back in Thailand. Kate shares how Merandi, the brand, was born from a single conversation with her friend and other co-founder, Grace. The savvy marketer also talks about branding, the importance of a strong unique selling point and corporate social responsibility and reminding herself it’s good to build a brand and create thoughtful products (all made to order) but that it’s equally important to stay grounded and to find ways to give back to society.

Kate admits that despite her background in content creation, it’s harder for her to focus on this area of the business, having her plate full as a co-founder. The young entrepreneur also discusses her relationship to creativity in business as well as her love of Thai classical piano (her mother is a renowned artist) before talking about mindful rituals and her newfound interest in Ashtanga yoga, which helps her get away from her to-do list to find some peace and quiet.

A thoughtful interview with a bright entrepreneur. Happy listening!

  • Known in the yoga world as THE teachers’ teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022.

Annie’s journey starts in Virginia, but she tells Anne how she found her path early on with dance, leading her to the Martha Graham company and New York City. From getting a scholarship to working at the junior company and briefly joining the main company, Annie found a calling in what she refers to as authentic self-movement and in teaching at the Martha Graham Center. An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda’s school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.

Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga.

Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students’ expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire’ whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.”

Annie also reveals her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie?

A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. Enjoy!

  • Arthur Gourounlian (@gourounlian) is an Armenian-born professional dancer, choreographer and television personality, and most recently one of the three judges on Dancing with the Stars Ireland.

Arthur has performed and toured with some of the most beloved performers of recent time, from Bananarama to Beyoncé, Pink to Kylie Minogue, and many more. After a successful career as a dancer, he went on to take a leading role in casting, coaching, movement directing and choreographing music videos, world tours, media campaigns, and trade/fashion shows for Christian Louboutin, Diesel, Puma, Jean-Paul Gaultier among others. He has also appeared on television and movies, fashion shows, and advertising campaigns himself, and performed in Britain's Got Talent, Celebrity X Factor, the Brit Awards and The Royal Variety Show.

Arthur and Anne met in 2010 when she was working for Christian Louboutin. They collaborated on a project for online platform Fashionair, when Arthur trained Christian for his first and only dance performance, which culminated in a viral video that saw the famous shoe designer tap dance his way in a dream sequence on a London stage.

In this conversation, Arthur shares with Anne his harrowing journey from Armenia to Belgium as a refugee with his family, escaping the war when he was just twelve years old. Then how, while their refugee status was still being decided, his family was rocked by the death of his father. Shortly after, young Arthur left for Brussels to try his hand at hairdressing, only to find himself being picked out of the crowd and selected as a dancer. From there, Arthur discusses his many surprises and successes, how he went from Milan to London, and made his mark on the dance scene as a performer before turning to choreography and creative direction.

Arthur dreamt of making it big, an homage to his father, and moving away from the refugee status he carried as an adolescent. The successful and charismatic personality is also the other half of one of Ireland’s most beloved celebrity couples, as he is married to Big Brother alumni/star Brian Dowling. The two of them recently welcomed their first child into the world, Blake Maria Rose, and Arthur shares the ups and downs that have led to this most joyous moment.

Arthur’s story is quite unlike any other. As Anne reflects to him, it’s epic enough to be hinting at Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey. A sparkling, touching and deeply positive interview with someone who will certainly light up your day. Happy listening.

Favourite quote of the episode: ‘I only keep things that Arthur wants to keep because I only keep what I think is best for me. Why would I listen to you? It's your journey. I want to create my own journey.’

  • Pippa Small (@PippaSmallJewellery) is a responsible jeweller based in London’s Westbourne Grove and she is considered to be one of the most inspirational leaders in the jewellery industry. Awarded an MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II in 2013, named ambassador of the human rights organisation Survival International and Winner of both the Ethical Jeweller of the Year and the Corporate Social Responsibility awards in 2016, and was also winner of the Green Sustainability Award by Town and Country magazine.

In this interview, Pippa tells Anne how she fell in love with travel as a young child, following her widowed mother who took her children to exotic places. She became attracted to stones very early on, and she explains how through stones, she keeps a connection to the places and people that each are linked to, and also finds a sense of protection from them.

Pippa shares how she went from studying medical anthropology to working with indigenous communities in South-East Asia before starting to develop her own jewellery. She started organically making her own pieces but she also developed her credentials working at Gucci under Tom Ford as a consultant designer in 2003. Even though, in her own words, her organic free flow jewellery felt at odds with the graphic and sexy feel of the Gucci house at the time she was recruited and briefed to go to India and design whatever she thought could work: colour, uneven shapes and a very different new aesthetic for their jewellery. This financially enabled her to start her first project working with the San bushmen in Botswana, combining her love of travel, working with indigenous communities and jewellery.

Anne and Pippa discuss the historic importance of adornment and jewellery, going back to the caves of Lascaux, the luxury that is ‘made by hand’ but also the great importance of learning to ‘make’ or transmitting tradition in the communities that Pippa has been working with, from Bolivia to India, to Jordan, Myanmar and Colombia. With a brand new collection out, made in Colombia from ethically sourced gold called ‘Together Forever’, Pippa and Anne talk about the difficulty of not just sourcing clean gold but motivating and educating consumers to talk about it.

The designer finishes the interview by sharing her love of books, and how moved she is by the world. Happy listening!

  • In this episode of Out of the Clouds, Anne Muhlethaler interviews Scott Wimsett @ScottWimsett, a presenter, a fashion director and sustainability expert based in the UK.

Scott started his agency, Bespoke Banter, in 2006 with a vision of supporting global talent and brands to create social assets in film to support their storytelling. Scott built a reputation for being a supportive and trusted partner for many world-renowned talents who work with his company closely to craft the broadcasted film and images they distribute globally.

More recently, Scott launched The Feel Good Fellowship with friend, model, and climate activist Arizona Muse. Among all his endeavours, Scott is committed to encouraging brands to prioritise transparency, accuracy, and research in all their digital content to empower audiences to make more sustainable, environmentally positive choices in the brands they support.

Much like Anne, Scott loves to entertain good conversations in addition to his content creation work. Scott has hosted a podcast with Royal Ascot on sustainability, and returned with a new show called ‘Personal Threads’, with diverse guests from David Gandy to Paul O’Grady and June Sarpong.

In this interview, Scott shares with Anne his story, from how he started on stage acting and dancing before going into modelling and PR — but always with a desire pulling him to TV and presenting. An astute expert in his field, Scott talks about his early wins and what helped establish his reputation, and later about the importance of listening carefully to what is coming next, including how that’s guided his moves from his start with Bespoke Banter to the projects he is doing now.

Scott shares the thought process that drove him to build his own company and why he felt, and still feels, that film (or video) is essential for brands and talent to tell a detailed story. Scott believes that brands can turn to film to create a documentary of sorts — one that transmits their values and history, and that will communicate their DNA to their audience — but that transparency and vulnerability are key.

Scott then tells Anne about his experience with Vipassana, which he discovered when a friend signed him up to attend a silent meditation retreat that transformed his life. He goes on to talk about how the combination of being active in addition to meditation and journaling continues to support him daily and explains that his meditation and other personal health rituals are not a hack or a quick add on, but, as he says, a necessity: ‘It's not like it's painted on. It's not like you are making yourself do it. It becomes just part of who we are. It's just how you live your life.’

    Happy listening!

  • Nada Ghazal (@NadaGhazalJewelry) is a jewellery designer and entrepreneur based in Beirut, Lebanon. In this episode of Out of the Clouds, she shares the story of her relationship with design and creativity with host Anne Muhlethaler. Growing up, Nada shares that she was always fascinated by adorning herself, and while she spent a lot of time painting, she was also making her own jewellery and shoes with the help of local artisans. Even back then, she remembers that her desire was to create objects that would connect her to other people.

Nada tells how she landed in graphic design since there weren't any jewellery or fashion courses in Beirut at the time, and which tilted her career towards advertising, giving her resources to start her own brand. Nada recalls how she quit her fancy agency job in Dubai on her 30th birthday, in order not to start her company ‘too late.’

The talented creative explains how her vision was to develop an individualistic line, that would be timeless but with jewellery that can be worn day to night — not be left in a safe. And from the start, Nada wanted to have the atelier under the same roof as the rest of the team.

Having lived through war and, more recently, survived the terrifying blast that destroyed part of the Lebanese capital, Nada movingly recounts how she strives to translate her experiences into her pieces, even turning a painful feeling into something beautiful.

She also talks eloquently about her deep connection to her city, her muse, which she feels has a soul or a spirit all of its own and what inspires her and gives her the courage to get back on her feet, rebuild and start again.

The two finish by discussing Nada's wellness and grounding rituals, which include a regular breathing practice in the morning, and her favorite guided meditations.

A moving and inspiring interview. Happy listening!
