Join us in the chat, discuss, and ask me questions about the accounts.Featured in this edition:The wendigo has been misappropriated from its original context in Algonquin folklore. The word "Wendigo" roughly means “The Evil Spirit Who Devours Mankind.” Originally it was depicted as a cannibal ice giant and cautionary tale relevant to the realities of Algonquin life. Euro-American popular culture mutilated it into what may only be described as a "zombie-were-deer."First, the Algonquin monster has relevance to their traditional way of life. Their culture was reliant on teamwork, so selfishness is a deadly sin to them, and the wendigo is the ultimate embodiment of that.Secondly, wendigo psychosis is a real mental illness and was historically used as a justification to destroy the Algonquin culture. There are written accounts in the last two centuries of people suffering from this illness being murdered by their peers.So then, how was the Wendigo tale altered? This goes back over a century to Algernon Blackwood's story "The Wendigo." The story does not depict a Wendigo but seems to get it confused with the Inuit (not Algonquin) creature Ijiraq and possibly the Tariaksuq. In the story, the monster burns away a victim's feet with friction, while in myth the Ijiraq is sometimes described as stripping the flesh off its victim's shins and if it survives then it becomes a faster runner. The Ijiraq is otherwise described as a trickster who kidnaps children or lures hunters by pretending to be caribou. So, it is easy to assume Blackwood read about the Ijiraq and then twisted the details for his own story.Now Euro-American popular culture takes the name of an Algonquin cannibal ice giant and applies it to a zombie-were-deer; it has been utterly stripped of its original context and symbolism. I doubt there will ever be much push-back against the zombie-wear-deer version since it has been burned into popular culture at this point.Now, that being stated, I'm going to present several modern-day accounts that some of the witnesses described as the ‘Wendigo.' He lived in a large home in a wooded area near Pensacola, Florida that he described as his 'dream home.' The house had a beautiful wood interior with cathedral ceilings and lots of room for his family. David was a successful carpenter and contractor who wanted nothing more than to reap the rewards of years of hard work and enjoy life.But, for some unknown reason, he and his family were chosen to witness a world within our own. In our first conversation, David repeated a story he had previously told other people, including NUFORC and MUFON investigators. I had heard similar scenarios in the past, but there was something different about David's saga, which struck a chord in me.Over the past 15 years, I have been privy to videos, audio, screencaps, and other evidence that David has provided to me. His incredible story of countless abductions and home invasions by these beings has been presented in several radio interviews. As well, I have uploaded videos and photographs to my blog to gauge the reaction of the paranormal community. Overall, the reception has been somewhat mixed, but that was expected.So, David put his faith in me and I did the same with him and we waited. I had decided not to post further details of David's encounters and evidence, to back off, to wait and see what happens. Well, as a result of the research, David's story has been told through multiple media interviews and presented on several television programs. I wrote an entire chapter about David's saga in my book ' Alien Disclosure: Experiencers Expose Reality.'But David's ordeal is only one of many alien encounters and abduction accounts that have originated on Florida's Gulf Coast. In 1988, I had a personal unexplained encounter with a winged humanoid in south-central Pennsylvania.Since the beginning of the millennium, a specific term has surfaced as part of the description of several of the sightings; ‘Jeepers Creepers.’ If you are familiar with modern horror films, then you’ll have an idea of what I’m talking about. In 2001, an American-German horror film, that took its name from the 1938 song ‘Jeepers Creepers,’ was released. It was a tale about two older siblings who become the targets of a demonic creature, known as the ‘Creeper,’ in rural Florida.The fact that several witnesses have compared the winged being that they encountered as resembling the Creeper is interesting. I suppose it is a cultural phenomenon; basically, because there are few other creatures, natural or fictional, to compare to. A few of the Chicago Mothman witnesses mentioned the Creeper character when giving a general description, though the eventual comparison came down to the bat-like wing structure and the ability to instantly launch itself into flight.During the same period that we were receiving reports in the Chicago area, we were also receiving accounts of similar winged beings in other locations throughout the United States and Canada. Join us in the chat, discuss, and ask me questions about the accounts.Featured in this edition:According to First Nations legend, the Thunderbird is said to have a wingspan the length of two canoes with the ability to deafen people with the sound of its flapping wings.In March 2010, the late Jc Johnson of Crypto Four Corners contacted me about an incident where twenty-four sheep were mutilated at a farm near Hogback, New Mexico, on the Dine' Navajo Reservation. The livestock owner explained that there were large talon marks but very little blood and no evisceration. The prints on the ground were only seen in the corral, not anywhere else on the farm. Was this an attack by a large flying predator? Why were the carcasses left intact?Jc mentioned that a large cryptid bird or pterosaur may have been responsible for this act. That theory is not as far-fetched as it may initially sound. For many generations, people in New Mexico and parts of Texas say they've seen birds so big they seem prehistoric. There is convincing anecdotal evidence that many of these legendary winged creatures are connected to modern sightings.I believe that many of these winged cryptids are corporeal beings that can manifest on our plane of existence. We will be discussing the newly reported Chicago/Lake Michigan Mothman & winged humanoid sightings as well as any updates to previous reports.Tobias Wayland is a Fortean investigator who has been actively investigating the unusual for over a decade. The first several years of his investigative career were spent as a MUFON field investigator and following that he investigated independently before becoming the head writer and editor for The Singular Fortean Society. Tobias is a frequent guest on various podcasts and radio shows, has written several books and contributed articles to periodicals on the paranormal, has appeared on television and in documentaries, and is often invited to speak at paranormal conferences and events. He was featured in the series premiere of Expedition X, and the Small Town Monsters documentaries Terror in the Skies and On the Trail of the Lake Michigan Mothman for his work investigating Mothman sightings around Lake Michigan. He and his wife Emily have been involved with the Lake Michigan Mothman investigation since its advent in the spring of 2017, and published a book chronicling the experience, The Lake Michigan Mothman: High Strangeness in the Midwest.
