This week I had the privilege of interviewing Acting Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police, Jim Colwell. Jim has been standing in as Chief Constable for DCP since July 2023, stepping up to the position following the suspension of Will Kerr. And as another inspiring police senior leader, he doesn't disappoint, with this exclusive discussion providing valuable learning for aspiring police leaders everywhere.
A lot of ground is covered in the 40 minutes, including Jim's proudest moments in policing, advice for aspiring officers, views on compassion and other emerging values in policing, the step up to Superintendent, and much more. He also answers my question about what the 'Holy Grail' of police promotion might be.

What's the FAIREST police promotion process of the land? Interviews? Applications? Job performance? Inspired by commentary on police promotion processes recently by the Chief Constable of Dyfed-Powys Police, I discuss the zeitgeist of police promotion processes. In this FREE episode (open first to subscribers), I'll cover some common issues and discuss what it means for you as an aspiring police leader.
Promotion processes are topical at the moment (plus ca change!), in light of the recent Police Federation report on pay and morale (including perspectives on promotion and CPD), along with NPPF to SIPP changes on the horizon. Officers moving to Australia: It's the talk of the town at the moment in policing. Both in terms of how disgruntled cops are handing in their warrant cards in droves, while Australian police forces are capitalising on the opportunity to poach good officers with a move overseas.

In S4E5, I provide highlights of and insights to an important policing report few have noticed, to help you get to grips with the wider context of your police leadership expectations.
In this FREE episode (subscriber-only access at first), I review a useful Police Foundation report called 'Getting the Right Things Done', derived from its Cumberland Lodge Policing Conference. This report was published very recently, but is packed full of insights to help give aspiring promotion candidates the competitive edge.
Are the police delivering what the public want? What works and how can this information be used in policing? How can police performance be managed? Such questions are important for aspiring leaders (especially at the more strategic Inspector + ranks) to be aware of. I can assure you, few other promotion candidates will have noticed this report to inform their leadership CPD and environmental scanning.

The College of Policing have just launched the new Code of Ethics. Many are confused as to what was wrong with the old one. But in any case, it's now published and online!
At over 10,000 words and with reems of scrolling through hundreds of bullet points on the College's website, it's not the easiest to get your head around.
