In this episode we talk about the importance of managing our expectations of our rescue dogs.
-
In this episode, I chat with dog trainer and behaviourist Anthony De Marinis about why our dogs behave differently with different people.
I asked Anthony to join me for this episode because I noticed that my dog, Rosa, has been behaving very differently when on walks with me versus when sheâs with my husband.
Anthony explains why this happens and why some dogs can display aggressive behaviour when out with one person and not another. We discuss what we can do to address this and some mistakes most of us donât even realise weâre making.
As always, I hope you enjoy this episode!

In this episode, I want to have a chat with you about how YOU feel. We talk about settling your rescue dog on this podcast a lot. It's what itâs all about. But now that Iâve had my dog Rosa for 8 months, I realise the importance of talking about our emotions as humans.
Once your rescue dog has settled in, you're probably going to start seeing some behaviour changes and not all of them are easy to manage without professional help. And some behaviours can be really stressful for us as the humans in the relationship.
So in this short episode, we talk about what to do if you're feeling emotionally overwhelmed. If you ever need to chat, feel free to reach out to me via email [email protected] or on Instagram @nihal_and_rosa.

In this episode, I invited behaviourist Angie Cook back to the podcast to talk about reactivity. We chat about why some dogs become reactive or sensitive to other dogs and what to do about it.
Angie explains that our dogs often give us signals that they are uncomfortable well before they get anywhere near an approaching dog. We talk about how to read those signals and respond to them to avoid the reaction in the first place.
We also chat about some of the behaviours that dogs naturally do that we as dog parents would prefer they donât like rolling in dirt, barking or eating poop. Angie explains how suppressing a dogâs natural behaviours can in some cases lead to reactivity so we need to find a balance between managing behaviours and trying to stop them altogether.
Angie is a certified Dog Behaviourist and a certified Family Dog Mediator with the Dog Door Behaviour Centre in North Carolina.
As always I hope you enjoy this episode.

Thinking about adopting a rescue dog? Or have you recently adopted one and are struggling to help him or her get settled?
Youâre not alone! It can be really stressful for dogs and their human companions in the first few days, weeks and even months. When I brought my dog Rosa home, we had a really tough start. She was too scared to come inside the apartment and slept by the front door for the first few days. She was scared of pretty much everything including cars, people, other dogs.
This is quite common with rescue dogs. But fast forward 6 months later and sheâs as happy as can be!
So in this episode, I want to share some of the lessons I learnt and the 6 things you must do to help make the transition as easy as possible for your new furry friend.

The truth is, not all adoption stories have a happy ending. Many dogs are sent back to the shelter because of behaviour challenges. Itâs estimated that 1 in 5 dogs end up back in shelters every year. And we all know that behind every statistic is a heartbreaking story.
This is the problem Emma Jane-Lee is working tirelessly to help solve.
Emma is a teacher, writer, assessment consultant and canine behaviourist based in France.
In this episode I chat with her about what drives people to adopt a dog and why you shouldnât judge a dogâs behaviour when itâs in the shelter.
Emma offers behavioural support to people who have adopted dogs from her and other local shelters.
Sometimes her work involves dogs who owners want to keep instead of surrender their dog but they have run out of options. She specialises in working with dogs who have a history of aggression and bites.
Emma is a member of the Pet Professional Guild and is a certified shelter dog behaviour consultant by the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants.
Sheâs written a book to help dog trainers. Itâs available on Amazon as a digital download and also a paperback. Client-Centred Dog Training is aimed at helping dog trainers get the most out of their human clients.

In this episode, I chat with Kim Brophey about why we need to rethink our relationship with our dogs and move away from thinking of our dogs as pets and of ourselves as âdog ownersâ but more like dog parents or carers.
We also chat about why itâs so important that we are more aware of how our emotions get in the way of our dogs' ability to learn and live happy lives.
Kim is an applied ethologist and professional Family Dog Mediator working to solve problems between people and dogs with modern science. If youâre wondering what an ethologist is, well theyâre scientists who study the behaviour of animals in their natural environment.
Kim is a certified dog behaviour consultant and a certified dog trainer. Sheâs also an author of the must read book, Meet your Dog.
Kim is truly breaking the mould in the pet dog industry in order to facilitate a long overdue paradigm shift in our relationships with our dogs.
