  • In this episode I had the privilege to talk to the leader who enabled hyper complex projects and teams with thousands of people to succeed and literally reach for the stars.

I‘m talking of none other than astrophysicist Prof. Thomas Zurbuchen. Till the end of 2022 he was the Chief Scientist at NASA and with that arguably the most powerful scientist on the planet with responsibility over thousands of people and a 8 billion dollar + budget.

Under his leadership, NASA successfully launched the historic James Webb Telescope and landed robots on Mars - among dozens of other impressive missions.

In addition, Thomas promotes entrepreneurs, inovators and leaders to become the best versions of themselves whereever and whenever he can.

Over his impressive carreer, Thomas learnt a lot about high perfoming teams by building and leading them. In this conversation, Thomas shares his leadership lessons, decision making process, how you create an organization that learns faster than it fails and much much more.

So please enjoy this episode of the Sparkr Podcast which was recorded in front of a live audience im summer 2023 with the extraordinary human being Thomas Zurbuchen.

On September 7th he’ll be one of the keynote speakers at the International Retail Summit by the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute in Zurich. Check them out if you are interested in visionary trends, important management insights and connecting with thought leaders in retail: https://gdi.ch/en/events/conferences/73-internationale-handelstagung/

In this conversation, Adam and myself discuss how we can create breakthroughs in our personal and professional life. But first, we explore why we get stuck every once in a while in our life and what the best tactics are to get unstuck again and prepare ourselves for breakthroughs.

Adam has done extensive research about this topic and has uncovered valuable insights to get unstuck and be successful in the transformations we want to make.

    - We elaborated on the state of being stuck, what it origins can be and how to proactively avoid it.

    - We discussed concrete tactics and mindsets to get ahead, create breakthroughs and get unstuck.

    - And also we talked about how we as leaders in business, as parents or otherwise caring human beings can be helpful for others who are stuck.

  • Sometimes small decisions are life changing. Urs Hölzle, a Swiss computer scientist, made such a decision without knowing when he became the 8th employee of Google back in the late 1990s.

For the past two decades, he was responsible for building what might be the most impressive infrastructure ever created.

You all know the services that run on the infrastructure Urs developed: Google Search, Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, Google Maps, Google Cloud and many others.

What makes Google's infrastructure impressive is the scale, complexity, and efficiency with which it operates. Google's data centers span multiple continents and are largely powered by renewable energy sources. The company uses advanced techniques, such as machine learning and AI, to optimize its data centers, reduce energy consumption and improve reliability.

In this conversation, I talked to Urs about the early days of Google when it was not more than just a few people and computers in a garage in Silicon Valley. Also we discussed the hiring strategy as well as the learning and innovation culture that were crucial for Google’s success.

We also touched on Cloud computing, the reason why Europe is behind the US regarding digital innovation and what drives him as a human being.

Please enjoy this special episode of the Sparkr Podcast with none other than Urs Hölzle from Google.

  • Bertrand Piccard is an exceptional person. As adventurer, explorer and psychiatrist he flew around the world with the Orbiter 3 balloon which was the longest flight in human history and outcompeted famous billionaire Richard Branson when doing so.

After breaking records with Orbiter 3, Bertrand Piccard set out to push the boundaries of the impossible again and after many years of perseverance and innovation, Piccard flew around the world in the first maned solar powered airplane known as Solar Impulse. Today he uses his influence and the Solar Impulse Foundation to collect more than 1000 profitable technologies who will contribute to a more sustainable future.

In this inspiring and personal podcast conversation we dive deep into what Bertrand Piccard learnt about taking risks, about getting back up after failures, making hard decisions, shifting paradigms and moving the boundaries of the impossible. Also, the power of the mind and how to train it became a recurring theme during the conversation thanks to his experience as a psychiatrist and hypnosis specialist.

Please enjoy this rich conversation which was recorded at the Swiss FinTech Awards Night 2021. The Swiss FinTech Awards are organized and made possible by Finanz und Wirtschaft Forum, Sparkr and many other partners and they award outstanding start-ups and influencers in the field of fintech.

You'll be surprised to learn in this episode how crucial and how far the importance of coral reefs go or how Ulrike and her co-founder are using 3D printing technology to build artificial reefs with clay.

Furthermore, we'll talk about how to deal with complexity, how to communicate complex topics - in science or anywhere for that matter, to what extend technological progress can help us with the challenge that is climate change and more.

So please sit back and enjoy this conversation with Ulrike Pfreundt.

• Globalization, automation, the rise of the gig economy... The way we work and what “work” itself means will change significantly in the years to come and remarkable transformations are up ahead.

One person who’s been thinking about and studying the future of work for decades is Prof. Pamela Hinds, Co-Director of the Center on Work, Technology, and Organization (WTO) in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University in Silicon Valley. Pamela studies the effect of technology on teams and collaboration. Most recently, Pamela has been looking at the changing nature of work in the face of emerging technologies, including the nature of coordination in open innovation.

The Sparkr Podcast now presents a conversation with Pamela which dates back to 2017. Even though three years have passed since the conversation, Pamela’s insights and thoughts still hold value today. We talked about what “work” means today and how it’s changing in the future, why a strong sense of purpose is increasingly important, why she doesn’t like the concept of “best practices” or why it is crucial for executives and decision makers of all kinds to become more data literate.

I had the opportunity to talk to Shailesh Prakash, Chief Information Officer of the Washington Post and one of the most influential minds in tech.

The Post is a big institution in journalism – an industry with a huge tradition and importance for society. In 2013 Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, bought the Post and with that an exciting transformation was initiated: How do you successfully transform a traditional business (no matter which industry) into a forward looking digital power house? And how does it affect the future of journalism at The Washington Post?

Shailesh has a lot of experience to share with you about all the implications of such a transformation – be it culture, mindset, metrics etc. And it seems to be working: The Washington Post is ranked as the 8th most innovative company in the world together with others like Amazon, Google or Apple – according to a list published by Fast Company.

We also talked about how business is transforming due to technology and what old economy players need to incorporate to make the jump on the new wave of the next digital economy. And much much more.
