  • In this episode, Nathan Vandenberg from NTT joins us on board the good ship SS Tomorrow. Where he chats to us about trust and safety in the industrial metaverse. They discuss the difference between the industrial and consumer metaverse, the importance of the network in the industrial metaverse, and the application of zero trust in industrial environments. They also touch on the impact of the 5G rollout, other enabling technologies like LoRaWAN, and the environmental impact of technology. Nathan shares NTT's vision for the future, including the development of an innovative optical and wireless network. Overall, the conversation highlights the critical role of trust, security, and sustainability in the industrial metaverse.

    Takeaways

The industrial metaverse is focused on connecting manufacturing and health environments through specialized networks, enabling better decision-making through the analysis of rich data.

Security is a critical consideration in the industrial metaverse, and the concept of zero trust, which involves never trusting and always verifying, is essential in ensuring trustworthiness and safety.

Consumers should be aware of the security implications of connecting various devices to their networks and should prioritize security when choosing products and services.

The rollout of 5G is a significant development in the industrial metaverse, enabling greater connectivity and performance in industrial and campus environments.

The future of the industrial metaverse involves the development of innovative technologies, such as an all-photonics-based network, to address power consumption and environmental challenges.

  • In this episode, Alan Ransil from Operad joins us on board the good ship SS Tomorrow about the concept of refi (regenerative finance) in the context of Web3 and blockchain technology. They discuss the environmental impact of different types of blockchains, the difference between refi and DeFi (decentralized finance), and various refi projects that aim to rebuild the financial system in an ecologically regenerative way.

Alan highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in sustainability claims and the potential of Web3 data to achieve this. He also mentions the future goal of eliminating greenwashing through data systems that allow consumers to verify claims made by companies.

    Takeaways

Different types of blockchains have varying environmental impacts, with some networks like Ethereum and Celo significantly reducing energy consumption compared to Bitcoin.

Refi (regenerative finance) aims to rebuild the financial system in an ecologically regenerative way, focusing on environmental sustainability and reducing reliance on extraction.

Refi projects use Web3 tools and transparent data to promote sustainability, such as measuring and reducing the environmental impact of blockchain networks, supporting carbon offset projects, and incentivizing ecologically regenerative practices.

Web3 data can provide end-to-end transparency in sustainability claims, allowing consumers to verify the environmental and social impact of products and services and identify greenwashing.

  • In this week's episode, we have Cathy Clennett from Hiringa Energy in the co-pilot seat talking about green hydrogen and the future of energy. If you don't know the difference between green, blue, and brown hydrogen? Here is a Dr. Seuss-style poem:

Let's talk about hydrogen, so pristine,

In green, blue, and brown, a colourful scene!

Green Hydrogen, the cleanest of all,

    Made with renewable energy's call.

Sun and wind power they play their part.

To split water molecules and start.

Blue Hydrogen, it's not quite green,

But it's cleaner than brown, as you've seen.

With carbon capture, it strives to be

A lower-emission energy source, you see.

Brown Hydrogen, well, it's not so grand,

Made from fossil fuels, across the land.

Pollution and emissions, they're the trouble,

We should aim for cleaner, and there's no rebuttal.

So remember the colours of hydrogen, true?

Green, blue, and brown in the energy stew.

Let's work together to make a change.

To a greener future, we can arrange!

  • We're back after a small hiatus.

This week we chatted with Dr Tom Williams from Number 8 Bio. On tackling one of the main causes of carbon emissions: methane from livestock. More importantly, we are discussing changing the diet of bovines from grass to seaweed, to stop them burping out greenhouse gases.

Of course with a hungry planet, having carbon-neutral meat is one piece of the puzzle.

  • Long-time listeners may have noticed that I am a geek for all things urban planning. Earlier this year, there was a debate about the concept of 15-minute cities and giving back cities to the people and the planet. And not car dependence.

Back in February, we invited our old friend of the show Keith Hutchings from the Comfortable Home Project and Jimmy from the Town Team project to discuss where the modern thinking in building communities here in Australia currently sits.

  • On this podcast, we love to chat about the future. However, sometimes it is important to take time out and look after your health, otherwise, you will not live to see it.

In this special bonus episode, we catch up with Coach Colin Thompson, who is turning 50 this month, and has the goal of walking 50 miles (80 km) as a part of his movement.

I myself am committed to do more exercise as the weather here in Perth warms up.
