  • At TRB 2024 we sat down with Renee Autumn Ray, Senior Director at Hayden AI, to unpack one of the most discussed (but perhaps the least meaningfully understood) topics in transportation: artificial intelligence.

Renee gives us the highlights of her recent Eno Center of Transportation report, Understanding AI & Transportation, and goes deeper into some practical applications of AI in the industry. She also shares what she’s been up to at Hayden AI, how they’re using next-generation technology to help transit agencies in the U.S. (and now Europe!) deploy more effective enforcement operations, and what other use cases they’ve got in the works.

  • In this episode, we ushered in the new year by getting together at TRB's 2024 meeting (a.k.a. the greatest transportation show on earth) and introducing our newest host, Sam Roxas.

Sam dove right in by sharing her transportation story, starting with her grandmother, who instilled the importance of walkable cities and their ability to create community and resilience for historically underserved communities. We're excited to bring Sam's experience in local government, insights on next-generation technology, and West Coast energy to the pod, so please join us in giving her a warm welcome!

Looking at the year ahead, we each shared what policies, programs, people, and places we’ll be watching in 2024. We had plenty of thoughts on IIJA implementation, the mysticism and curiosity swirling around AI, and our collective responsibility to take a more holistic, interdisciplinary approach to this big-bang moment in transportation. What will you be focused on this year?

  • No person in Congress has done more to promote active transportation and livability than Representative Earl Blumenauer. With his brightly-colored bike lapel pens, he has long been one of the most recognizable people on Capitol Hill. Since his election to the US House of Representatives in 1996, Congressman Blumenauer has been a tireless advocate for livable communities that are safe, healthy, and economically secure.

Ahead of his retirement at the end of this year, The Mobility Podcast was thrilled to welcome Rep. Blumenauer to the stage at Replica's TRB After Hours Reception. Pete Gould and Samantha Roxas asked the Congressman to reflect on his tenure in Congress and the progress we have made (and still need to make!) in order to make American cities more livable and vibrant.

From the bottom of our hearts, a huge thank you to Congressman Blumenauer for his tremendous leadership over the past 28 years - and for inspiring all of us to ask more of our federal leaders, from prioritizing active transportation and making American cities more livable. Your advocacy has made America a better place, and you have inspired all of us throughout our careers.

And thank you as well to the Transportation Research Board for welcoming us back to #TRBAM this year!

  • One highlight of ARTS 2023 was when Chris Gerdes intentionally made the audience groan by displaying a slide that mentioned the infamous Trolley Car Problem – before making it right by presenting a commonsense framework for determining the roadworthiness and safety of AVs.Chris is teaching the next generation of transportation tech professionals about ethics and equity of transportation systems. He’s a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, as well as a former director and co-founder of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (also known as CARS). Chris was also the first Chief Innovation Officer in the U.S. Department of Transportation under the Obama Administration. In this episode, Greg Rogers and Sophie spoke with Chris at the TRB ARTS conference in July 2023 about:• Duty of care: Why the trolley car problem is the wrong question to ask about AV safety• Education: Teaching the next generation of leaders about ethics & equity In transportation systems• Government & Innovation: Chris' experience as the first Chief Innovation Officer at the U.S. Department of Transportation• Proving AVs on the race track: Testing AVs on a race track can improve understanding of vehicle capabilities and limitations. •••Resources•••Learn more about Chris’ work: • Building Ethics into Autonomous Vehicles (Video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5QcfDxU3js • Designing Ethical Self-Driving Cars (Article): https://hai.stanford.edu/news/designing-ethical-self-driving-cars • Exceptional Driving Principles For Autonomous Vehicles (Paper): https://futurist.law.umich.edu/exceptional-driving-principles-for-autonomous-vehicles/ As always, you can follow us on Twitter: @MobilityPodcast, @MoveGreg, @Pete_Gould, @SmarterTranspo.

  • American roads are becoming more dangerous for everyone – especially those traveling on foot, in a wheelchair, and on a bike. Jonathan Adkins, CEO of the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), joined us to discuss the need for widespread adoption of the Safe System Approach, putting Vision Zero into action, the greater risks that larger vehicle designs pose to vulnerable road users, and why Al Roker, one of America's favorite TV personalities, has become a champion for walking. We interviewed Jonathan ahead of GHSA's Annual Meeting in New York City from August 13-16, so we were also able to get a sneak peek at the safety topics that will be discussed at the conference. In this episode, we explored...- The national challenge of improving traffic safety. The U.S. finally has a national goal of zero traffic deaths through the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Roadway Safety Strategy – but in the same year that was released, we hit a 16-year high in traffic deaths. Fatalities have exceeded 40,000 for the past two years, reaching levels we haven't seen since before the Great Recession. - Pedestrian fatalities are at a 41-year high, and increasing faster than all other traffic-related deaths. See GHSA's latest pedestrian safety report here: https://www.ghsa.org/resources/Pedestrians23- The Safe System Approach, which has been adopted by USDOT, presents actionable strategies for enhancing traffic safety by looking at the entire system rather than addressing individual contributors to risk.
