  • Today, I catch up with Cody McBroom, the owner of Tailored Coaching Method, a lifestyle coaching company that's focused on fitting the training and nutrition to the client and not the other way around.

    In our conversation, we talk about the similarities between running a successful business and building a lean, healthy body. Of course, they both require time, energy, focus, and prioritization, but they also require ongoing data and adjustments based on reflection and improved awareness. Sometimes we have to go slow to go fast and develop the skills and the tools around things like planning, preparation, time management, training, intensity, volume, and understanding. The vast array of nuances around the dieting process and seasons of change become the very levers that we can and do use to adjust and drive long-term success.

    We also talk about establishing clarity through educating our clients, creating structure through effective time management, chronic undereating, under-tracking, and metabolic slowdowns and adaptations. We talk about setting realistic expectations versus actual commitments, assessing the need for diet breaks and refeeds, and when it's relevant to implement these things, as well as the role of stress and your personal life in your ability to adhere to the diet at hand. And finally, we finish with a quick discussion on peptides, weight loss drugs, and weight loss sustainability.

  • 1 year. Imagine what you could achieve if you set an intention and then strategically planned each step out 1 year in advance.

    In January 2023 Body Systems Coach @joeyszolowicz and I set an intention to do a 1 year periodized physique transformation. The goal was to spend 1-2 months at maintenance while establishing accurate tracking/training habits, 6-7 months bulking up, followed by a 3-month fat-cutting aggressive calorie deficit… all leading up to a year-end physique photo shoot.

    In this episode of the Smart Nutrition Made Simple Show, I chop it up with Coach Joey as we reflect on this past year. We talk about the trials and tribulations around bulking and cutting, the mental fortitude it takes to reach single-digit body fat, how going through this process allows him to empathize more with clients, and the incredible results he achieved.

    I think everyone should have the opportunity to work towards something like this. And it doesn't have to be a physique shoot. It could just be a physical activity goal like a Spartan race, a marathon, a hike, a career goal, or a travel goal. Something where you have to put in a considerable amount of effort towards the desired outcome. Because I think it's liberating to help you acknowledge and realize just what you're capable of.

  • Today on the Smart Nutrition Made Simple Show I'm sharing an open and honest conversation with my soon-to-be former client Jeremiah H. Jeremiah is a single dad with a demanding career who, despite several significant road bumps along the way, still managed to put in the time and energy to focus on his health.

    🤕 He had a serious motorcycle accident and required shoulder surgery

    📓 He’s in the process of going back to school to earn a degree in exercise science

    🏠 He literally built his father a house from the ground up

    When Jeremiah joined our Smart Nutrition Coaching Program he was struggling with his weight, he had developed diabetes, and despite all his attempts at eating "healthy" and exercising, the scale just wouldn't budge. Two years later Jeremiah is down 35lbs and has put on about 15lbs of muscle. But more important than the weight, he has changed his mindset around what it means to be healthy.

    This is a bittersweet conversation for me because I'm sad to lose Jeremiah as a client, but I'm excited for him to continue on in our community. And I look forward to all the amazing things I know he can accomplish down the road.

  • Not many people can walk onto a college football team having never played a down of high school football and end up in the NFL. But my next guest on the Smart Nutrition Made Simple Show did just that.

    Today I chop it up with Nick Hardwick. Nick is a former NFL center for the San Diego Chargers turned 1 on 1 fitness and nutrition coach. He is the owner of HardwickLIFE, a health and wellness company that focuses on helping individuals reclaim their health and their lives. Nick also serves as a certified NFL transition coach to help former NFL players successfully navigate the oftentimes difficult process of transition out of the highest level of professional athletics. 

    In today's discussion, we talk a lot about Nick's experience in high school, collegiate, and professional sports, the nutritional protocols he was using to gain and maintain weight in the NFL, and the injury that ended his 11-year NFL career. 

    We talk about his transition from professional athlete to everyday life, the struggles he encountered figuring out his new identity, and the unique nutritional protocol he used to shed a massive amount of weight post-NFL. 

    Finally, we talk about his biggest frustrations as a fitness and nutrition coach, why we all deserve to be healthy and make ourselves a priority, and how he shows up as a father and sets an example for his kids.

  • Optimal health isn’t just about living longer, it’s about living better.

    On today’s episode of the Smart Nutrition Made Simple Show, I had the distinct honor of speaking with Dr. Jesse Greer.

  • Could intermittent fasting be the key to sustainable weight loss? 

    My next guest, elementary school teacher turned best-selling author Gin Stephens thinks so.

    In 2014 Gin was obese, felt like crap, and hated the person she saw in the mirror. She had spent years yo-yo dieting only to lose and regain the same weight back, and then some. Desperate to find a solution, she turned to intermittent fasting. Since then Gin has lost more than 80 pounds and kept it off.

    In today's conversation, we take a deep dive into the world of intermittent fasting and all of its physiological benefits. We talk about why intermittent fasting is easier to implement than other types of dieting protocols, the concept of metabolic flexibility, the importance of setting realistic expectations when it comes to fat loss, some of the biggest mistakes people make with intermittent fasting, as well as how to get started on your own intermittent fasting journey.
