How can you get the edge as a professional speaker?
What can you do to make yourself more marketable?
Well today on the show, my guest Elliot Kay, will be sharing valuable insights on how to achieve just that through The Speaker Awards.
Elliot is co-founder of the speaker awards, a speaking coach, and a professional speaker.
About three years ago, he saw a huge gap for speakers, and had a big idea to fill it.
Thatâs when The Speaker Awards were born, and over those three years they have gone from strength to strength.
Eliot has gathered the great and the good from the speaking industry and you are going to be getting insights and behind the scenes info that will help you raise your profile, whether you enter the awards or not.
Weâre going to be talking about the awards, the judges, the categories and the criteria, and tips for applying and winning and having more impact with your speaking in general.
So strap in and listen, as this episode will give you so much value to move your speaking career forward.
What youâll discover:
Why Elliot created the Speaker Awards. Who should enter the speaker awards. Why you should consider entering. How to decide what category of the awards you should enter. What happens if you qualify for more than one category? How the judges were selected for the awards. Why there are three judges per category. The definition of âstage presenceâ from two speaking coaches. How to go about making yourself âmarketableâ even if you are in a highly competitive niche. The speaker âassetsâ you need to get booked. How important the speaker reel production value is in helping you get paid. Elliotâs tips for speakers who want to enter the speaker awards. The three most important areas to focus on to develop your speaking to an award winning standard. What the speaker summit is and why you should attend. All things Elliot:

When I met David Van Bennekum on Linked In and he told me heâd written a self-help book on National Security, I thought âThatâs a bit unusual, followed by blimey heâs got some guts ⊠thatâs a challenging topicâ.
My curiosity was well and truly piqued though, so I had a look at his LinkedIn profile and saw that he was a former United States Marine Corps Infantry and Logistics Officer. He was a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and heâd retired from active service as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Then I saw that besides that, he had a law degree and also a Masters in National Security Law from Georgetown University.
He obviously had the knowledge, but as I messaged him back to find out more, Iâm not going to lie ⊠based on previous conversations with some âexpertsâ, I was fully expecting him to bore the pants off me!
But ⊠the opposite happened. When he started sharing about it, he didnât waffle on about facts and stats, no ⊠he made me laugh and even better, gave me a light bulb moment about something truly important.
And thatâs when I knew I had to get him on the show, because being able to make something complex, technical and difficult, engaging and relatable to an audience, is a key skill for writers and speakers.
If you want to get a different perspective on how to make your subject more entertaining, then sit back and listen âcause youâll love this show.
What youâll discover:
Why David decided to write the first self-help book on National Security How he decided on the big idea of the book Why people are sceptical about it and how he addresses that. Why the six degrees of Kevin Bacon game is relevant to National Security Davidâs definition of National Security and why he thinks it applies universally. What he means by âtrue communityâ How he approached making the topic entertaining and relatable, and why this was so critical. Some examples of his approach in action. Where speaking fits into the picture. All things David:

The other day I had a talk planning call with a potential client, and he said:
âI just want to get consistent results. Sometimes I start my talk and I can feel the energy shift, and I know Iâve engaged them. But other times, I just canât get their attention, and I want to understand how to do this consistently every time I speak.â
The truth is that grabbing your audienceâs attention in the right way, (or âhookingââ them in, as I call it), is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for a successful talk.
The first 180 seconds of your talk is perhaps the most crucial, and thatâs because in those two to three minutes you are communicating a lot to your audience without even realising it.
In this show, Iâm going to show you how to make the most of that time, and to avoid the bear traps I so often see speakers falling into at the start of their talk.
Enjoy!
What youâll learn:
The messages you are communicating to your audience before you even start speaking. The big mistakes a lot of speakers make with the start of their talk. Why you should go for quantity over quality when you are looking for great ideas. The questions you should ask yourself before you âsettleâ for a talk title, open and close. Why you should be provocative and what to do after. If you want to be heard stay out of the âherdâ The way to make your talk unique. And more!!

Not too long ago I heard one of the gurus in my space say that one of the big factors in his success is that when everyone else âzigsâ, he âzagsâ. You can see âziggingâ going on all around you, suddenly everyone wants to be a neurodiversity expert, or an AI expert, because thatâs whatâs hot, because they are chasing the trend.
But what if you donât do that? What if you go your own way, and stay true to who you are and who you want to help?
That is the path that Becky Benfield-Humberstone has chosen right from the get go. A born entrepreneur, Becky left school at 16 to start her own super niched business, Utterly Horses, which became the largest model horse stockist (yes, itâs a thing) in Europe, with a product range of over 2,500 items that retailed to a customer base of over 50,000 people and corporate clients. After successfully exiting that business in 2018, Becky wanted a new challenge.
Thatâs when she created Brand Artisan, and in that business she has been helping business owners bring their visions to life, stand out, and exponentially grow their businesses. She is joining me here to talk about all things branding, storytelling and marketing, and I know you are going to pick up some golden nuggets from her.
What youâll discover:
How Becky started an international business at 16. The problem Becky solves today. The difference between brand strategy and marketing strategy. Why keynote speakers need a brand. The big branding you might be making in business. Where stories fit into the work Becky does. Why Becky bucks the trend and only works with one client at a time. Where speaking fits in. Why Becky created the Founders project and how you can get involved. All things Becky:

Quick tips to build your speaking confidence, skills, impact, business or engaging talk content. These tips originate from issues that come up for students, and questions from my audience. If you want to get your question answered DM me on Instagram or LinkedIN @Saraharcher15.
SHOW NOTES
If people believe that you can deliver what they want and need, they will book you to speak, or buy your products or services. But in showing them that you can deliver there's a fine line between confident and cocky, and if you cross that line, it can push people away⊠and you donât want that.
So ⊠how do you show authority without shoving it in peopleâs faces?
Well thatâs what Iâm going to talk about today. Hereâs what this show will cover:
A definition of authority in this context
The five ingredients for building authority authentically
Why you need to convince yourself first and how to do it
The next level of self-awareness that has made all the difference to me
Why âit has to be âyouâ - 100% of the time
The real way to show youâre an expert
Tips for breaking down barriers

Most of us have experienced sales âtacticsâ, and likely weâve either recoiled against them and scarpered (physically or digitally), or have gone ahead with our needed purchase, even though a little bit of shine has worn off the relationship with the person that used them on us.
Our experiences have made us sceptical of anyone with something to sell, and allergic to feeling âsalesyâ ourselves.
But whether we like it or not, weâre all in the business of selling something to someone, whether thatâs ourselves as a speaker, our book to a reader, or our products and services to clients and customers.
So ⊠I guess that means you have to âsuck it upâ and jump on the soft and hard sell bandwagon if you want to succeed.
Well no ⊠you donât.
Thatâs because there is another way that will likely yield you more reward in sales and personal satisfaction than anything youâve come across before.
And that new approach is called Karmic Selling created by my guest Stan Gwizdak.
Stan Gwizdak is CEO of The Kormac Group, a results-driven management consulting firm that embodies his clean heart and commitment to serving others. As a chief executive and Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Stan has spent more than 30 years leading business transformations at General Electric, BAE Systems, Honeywell, Textron, Aurora Capital, Goodyear Tire and Rubber, and more.
Stan is here today to talk about Karmic Selling and the successes and failures that helped him design his system and grow his company.
Whether youâre a speaker, sales executive, entrepreneur, youâll discover why when you do good, even more good will come your way.
What youâll discover:
Why Stan believes that the traditional approach to sales needs to change. What made Stan leave a company just before he was due to take the top job. How he approached getting clients for his company without having a sales background. How he took a one man band to a business competing with the big consultancies. The problem that Karmic Selling solves for individuals and companies. The three biggest mistakes people and companies are making around this problem at the moment. The key ingredients of the Karmic Selling System and how it counters those mistakes. The first few steps you should take if you want to get started using the karmic Selling philosophy and system. How Stan is using speaking in business and to promote his book. All things Stan:

I had a similar issue come up with two clients this week, and itâs a mistake I see people making regularly, not just with their speaking, but in other critical content too. This mistake can result in people not paying attention to you, lost business opportunities, and normally leads to frustration and the question, âI just donât understand what Iâm doing wrong!â
What they are doing wrong is not leading with the problem.Thatâs why in this episode Iâm sharing:
What leading with the problem means. Where you should be doing it. Why you are likely losing peopleâs attention. The simple exercise you can do to avoid the LinkedIn advert issue. The important check you need to make about where your audience is. Examples to illustrate.Enjoy!

SUMMARY
Is it possible to brag in a way that attracts people to you, rather than turning them off? Lisa Bragg, author of Bragging Rights believes so, and she is here to redefine bragging and share exactly how to do it the right way.
SHOW NOTES
We have been conditioned since childhood to keep quiet about our achievements. We are taught things like, ânobody likes a show offâ, âstay humbleâ and âself praise is no praiseâ. And the majority of us conform, stay quiet, assuming that our good work will be noticed, and we will get our reward in good time.
When we see those people who are shameless self promoters we judge them and âtutâ and assume that they will be smited by the God of Humility⊠(whilst secretly wishing people knew about the great things we had done).
But then we notice they are not being called out or shamed for being a âshow offâ, in fact theyâre getting more attention, and they are the ones getting rewarded with promotions, or new clients.
And then we get frustrated, bitter, and envious, which affects the way we are being and communicating and turns people off. Or ⊠we go out all guns blazing and tell everyone everything we ever done all at once⊠which also puts people off.
The big question is ⊠why are we told that we should stay quiet and humble when it harms rather than helps? And how can we share our authority, and experience
Well that is what my guest Lisa Bragg is here to answer for us. Lisa has literally written the book on how to talk about success. Her book Bragging Rights: How to Talk about Your Work Using Purposeful Self-Promotion launched in May.
In addition to being an author, she is a speaker, advisor, professional mentor and founder of MediaFace, a Toronto-based content and consulting firm. She was also a
TV reporter and anchor for 15 years.
I hope this show helps you step out of the shadows and share all the excellent stuff you are up to!
Enjoy
What youâll discover:
The catalyst for Lisa to embrace âbraggingâ and why she had avoided it before.
Why Lisa believes that modesty is a negative habit?
The double standards at play in society when it comes to bragging and âthe range of acceptable behaviourâ.
Why you shouldnât market yourself for where you have been and what you should do instead.
The myths around bragging that could be holding you back.
Why finding a partner can help you with promotion.
The three biggest mistakes people making around bragging.
Three tips for promoting yourself the right way.
How Lisa uses speaking in her business.

I come across many speakers who are struggling to connect with their audience, and as a consequence their talks fail to get them the results that they want. One of the biggest reasons they struggle is because they are doing what I call ⊠talking about the plane vs. talking about the pain.
Thatâs why in this episode Iâm sharing:
What it means to talk about the plane Why your audience doesnât care about the plane What you need to focus on instead. Why âavatarâ exercises are pointless How to find the burning platform that will get your audience into action The opportunity if you can connect deeply A special tool I created to help you get this rightEnjoy!

How often, when it comes to writing in your business, has the blank page beaten you?
Iâve seen so many people get stopped, or never share what they have written because they donât think itâs good enough, or they are worried about being judged.
Just like when you speak, in your business writing too, you get an amazing confidence boost from knowing that your message is good, that your content will make you stand out and connect with your target audience.
When that happens youâre excited to put yourself out there.
So how do you shift from stuck to successful?
How do you go from getting underwhelming results with your business writing, to your audience saying ⊠âthis person gets me and my problem, I think I need to work with themâ?Thatâs where this show comes in.
My guest today is Kyla Skinner, copywriter and business writing mentor.
She helps business owners harness the power of personality to better connect with their audience, stand out in todayâs increasingly noisy market and attract new clients â so they can grow their business, not hold it back.
As a fully accredited introvert, Kyla had herself felt shy, nervous and reluctant about showing her own personality.
But that changed when she discovered the huge impact it made on growing her fledgling freelance business.
Now, sheâs an experienced (and award-winning) strategic copywriter, whoâs built her copywriting and brand language business, The Jarrah Consultancy, primarily through word-of-mouth referrals. Over the past 20 years, Kyla has helped to position and promote hundreds of brands, including many big name, global market leaders.
Today, she also encourages coaches, consultants and small business owners to tap into all this insight and expertise via her dedicated membership community, Copy Café.
Enjoy!
What youâll discover:
How Kyla became a copywriter and why personality matters to her. The problem with generic writing and using tools like chat GPT. What it means to âshowâ your personality in your writing and the difference it makes to your message. Why small business owners struggle to connect with their audience in their copy. The three words that Kyla wrote for a Subaru ad that tells a big story. How to approach âdaring to be differentâ if you are more introverted. The difference between bland business writing versus writing with personality. The gap that Kyla found small business owners falling into, and how she filled it. Examples of results business owners have got by stepping out of their comfort zone. Three tips for how to get more personality into your writing in a way that feels natural and not forced. The surprising differences Kyla experienced as a copywriter creating her own signature talk. How speaking has been working for Kyla and her businessAll things Kyla:

Waking up paralysed in 2014 completely turned Jamie McAnshâs life upside down.

Today, Jamie divides his time between speaking all over the world on various topics, and building the See No Bounds global business community.
In this show you are going to get some brilliant insights into what it takes to keep going even when your life and world comes crashing down again and again! You are also going to get some great tips from Jamie around how he built his speaking career.

One of the most important parts of your talk is the opening, because you have to grab the attention of your audience and show why the talk is relevant for them. What Iâve noticed recently with some of my clients, is that their âhookâ, (or âlightning boltâ as I call it), is good, but they arenât fully committing to it, and that is weakening the opening and the connection with the audience and the topic theyâre speaking about.
So ⊠I thought Iâd share the coaching and feedback I gave them with you, so that you avoid this issue, and make the start of your talk rock!
In this show Iâm covering:
The triggers for attention recap. Three potential âlightning boltâ options to hook your audience. The problem and an illustration. What to do instead. Why it works Tips for building this skillEnjoy!

Still one of the most prolific tools around, Powerpoint can literally make or break your presentation, depending on how you use it. Thatâs why I wanted to get Philippa Leguen de Lacroix on the show.
She started life employed as a graphic designer, and was increasingly tasked with creating powerpoint slides for the different organisations she worked for. But ⊠Philippa had a yearning to become her own boss, and after a hockey match with another designer pal they decided to start their own agency. That company has gone from strength to strength, pushing the boundaries of powerpoint to deliver jaw dropping presentations that continue to delight audiences and win new clients.
In this show you are going to get some great tips to help you avoid the pitfalls of powerpoint and other types of software, and create slides that support you creating a talk that shines.
Enjoy!
What youâll discover:
What made Philippa focus on powerpoint. How you and your slides can build the connection with your audience or trash it. Why the bar for good slides is so low and the bad practice Philippa has seen that you can avoid. The psychological and physiological things that we need to take into account with our slide creation. What design linked with value means and why it matters. What is more important, the talk content and delivery, or the slides. Why Philippa believes we should still consider powerpoint over other slide software options. Three great tips for good slide design and creation. All things Philippa:

It wasnât until I embarked on my marketing, influencing and sales odyssey, that I discovered the concept of âaudience sophisticationâ as I call it.
Itâs something Iâve often shared with marketing clients, but although I used it myself in my talks, Iâve not taught it to speakers until recently.
And the feedback when I have has been so positive, that I thought Iâd better share it with you too!
In this episode, Iâm going to break it down for you, so that you can level up your talks and get better results.
What youâll discover:
The origin story of audience sophistication. Why it matters for speakers. How it affects your content. A practical example of how you might use it. How you can discover the sophistication of your audience.Enjoy!
