  • Black History Month rolls on with a local DC story. Black history is American history but it’s also, and perhaps especially, DC history, as so much of our nation's capital was built by free and enslaved African Americans. Join Becca and Rebecca as we discuss Benjamin Banneker, astronomer, surveyor, and "correspondent" of Thomas Jefferson. Hear the truth behind the myths, why there are so many myths about him, and how very important Banneker is to the history of DC and legacy of abolitionism.

  • February is Black History Month; a time to pause a bit and reflect on how Black History is American History, and to highlight the often untold or hidden stories we don't know nearly enough about. This week, we dive into one of the most important, and most effective, protests of the Civil Rights Era: The Selma Marches.

Join the Rebeccas as they take a deep dive into not only how the marches occurred, but why they occurred, linking them the broader Civil Rights movement that had already scored a number of significant wins by 1965, and explaining in detail why these marches were so successful.

  • For fans of the Pod, you probably know that our esteem for President Andrew Jackson is hovering near our esteem for President Wilson....right around the bottom of the heap. But that isn't going to stop us from telling you the fascinating tale of the shockingly close attempt on Jackson's life, while also stating clearly and firmly: political violence of any kind is never acceptable. And yes, that includes folks we don't even like!

Join the Rebeccas as they dive into the life of the clearly mentally disturbed wannabe assassin, and give you the bizarre details of the attempt that makes one think Jackson might be one of the luckiest human beings ever.

  • Double Indemnity (1944) is, shall we say, "loosely based" on the real life murder of one Albert Snyder by his wife, Ruth, and her lover, Judd Gray. At the time the murder in 1927, this was labeled "The Crime of the Century" and was relentlessly pursued by the press which, shockingly, brought all sorts of twists and misrepresentations into the case.

Join the Rebeccas as they take a deeper dive into what actually happened with the case, how Hollywood and the press distort it, and how all this relates to the to the Equal Credit Opportunity Act passed in 1974.

  • It’s the end of the year, so it's time for a World's Fair episode! In 1904 the attention of the world turned to St Louis, which held a massive and, of course, controversial World's Fair (because why else would we be talking about it!). In the middle of the Fair they even held the 3rd *ever* Olympic Games, which included a marathon that actually served as one of the most horrific and unethical medical experiments on human beings without their consent or knowledge. Perhaps not shockingly, once you hear the story, this was also *almost* the last Olympic marathon ever. Good times! • <<<MATURE CONTENT WARNING>>> The story of the Oneida Community is a fascinating mix of ahead-of-their-time progressive ideals, and the stark realities of mid-19th century America. John Noyes firmly believed the 2nd Coming of Jesus had already occurred centuries earlier, and it was now the job of mankind to create the perfect society envisioned by many Christians. The Oneida community was his effort to create this ideal vision. It was a largely successful socialist economic enterprise, but as time went on, as is usually the case, the idealist vision soon became corrupted, especially when it came to the "free love" ideology espoused by Noyes. Join Rebecca and Becca as they delve the complicated picture of the Oneida Community. Comments or Questions? Or have an idea for future episodes - #pitchtothepod? • OYEZ OYEZ OYEZ! It's October, which means the Supreme Court is back in session and the Rebeccas are digging into some of the history of the Court this month.

Associate Justice of the Supreme Court William O. Douglass is probably one of the most important Supreme Court Justices you probably know nothing about. Appointed by FDR, he remains the longest serving justice in the history of the court, at just over 36 years. Listen about his interesting life, his many controversies, and how he almost single-handedly saved the C&O Canal from turning into a parkway!
