In this episode, Iām bringing back one of my favorite guests, Julie Swan. Sheās the founder of the Dog Breeder Society and she runs a successful business breeding German Shorthaired Pointers and Rat Terriers.
But donāt tune out if youāre not a dog breeder! This conversation is full of financial tips that apply to any type of pet business. Youāll learn about the numbers you need to know in order to set your pricing, plus the one number that really doesnāt matter at all! Julie also gives us actionable steps to be more confident about our pricing.
I also loved hearing Julieās insight on pricing gaps. You know when you see someone who has a product for $5 and another for $500 with nothing in between. Thatās a pricing gap and you want to avoid having that in your business. It makes customers doubtful of the value of both the cheaper item and the expensive item.
If you want to hear more of my insights into how I would implement Julieās advice from this conversation, thereās an exclusive bonus episode for Wear Wag Repeat Society members. This year Iām releasing a new bonus episode every month with real examples of how I would implement each expert podcast guestsā advice. A lot of the time Iām walking the walk with this advice in my own business, so if youāre curious and want that extra insight, get on the waitlist for Wear Wag Repeat Society. Membership opens for about a week at the start of each quarter - so the next chance to join is early April.
But today, here on this episode, we still have tons of valuable and actionable advice for you. Letās dive right into the interview with Julie Swan.
If you like what you hear, remember to leave a review in your podcast app or share the episode on social media tagging me @wearwagrepeat.

In this episode, I have the pleasure of getting to know pet author and certified animal behavior consultant Amy Shojai. We get started with Amyās story of how she got inspired to get into writing about pets while working in a small vet clinic in Eastern Kentucky.
At the clinic, she witnessed first hand the wide variety of treatments and pets and need to convey important information to pet parents in a way that they could easily understand. That experience got her started writing about pets for publications like Cat Fancy and Dog Fancy. She developed a signature writing style for articles that started with a story about a pet, transitioned into the featured medical information and wrapped up with an update on how the pet is doing after treatment. That structure of leading with a strong hook followed by education got peopleās interest, especially when there was a happy ending to share!
Amy and I also talk about why we love to read fiction written by dog experts. Amy admits that she has thrown books across the room when the author clearly doesn't know a thing about dogs and writes unrealistic or dangerous stories about them! Same, girl! If you dream of writing about pets, or if you just want to promote your pet business through really great stories, you will enjoy this interview!

This episode is all about my favorite themeā¦ collaboration! In talking with Natalie Asaro of Petcurean Pet Nutrition, it was awesome to learn how their team works together with others in the pet food industry.
We talked about some of the trends in the pet food industry as pet parents are getting more involved and invested in the ingredients they feed their dogs. Petcurean is leading the way with research into sustainable ingredients like black soldier fly larvae. I also enjoyed learning about how theyāre making nutrition accessible to all pet parents with three different brands at three different price points. Itās interesting to think about how all of us could offer something like this in our pet brands.
Another lesson we can all learn from this conversation with Natalie is about providing honest and thorough customer service. The pet nutritionist team at Petcuriean is available to share food advice with pet parents, and they might even recommend a different brand if nothing they carry is the right fit for the pet. I love how transparent that is! It shows how everyone on the team really cares the most about pet health. At the end of the day, itās all about healthy pets!

I always have such a great time talking to Dr. Emily Stein of Primal Health (the makers of Teef! Dental water additive). Whenever we chat, she makes super complicated scientific info about our pets easy to understand. For example, I love how she gives characters to the good and bad bacteria that are living in your petās mouth.
Did you realize that oral health can be connected to cognitive health and bad bacteria in the mouth actually have a correlation to dementia in pets? Dr. Stein has some great advice on how to support your dogās health through the microbiome of their mouth. We definitely nerd out on some scientific info in this conversion. I think youāre going to love it! I also asked Dr. Stein to provide some clear and actionable takeaways at the end so we know what to do with all this great info that she shares.
Before I hit play, I want to acknowledge that this is Episode 295 of the Wear Wag Repeat Podcast! That means we will hit episode 300 before the end of the year. I canāt wait to celebrate that amazing milestone!
