An accident happened in July that everyone is talking about. This conversation is inspired by the CrowdStrike event. However, it’s NOT specifically ABOUT the CrowdStrike event.
While everybody was mostly analyzing process dumps and null pointers, Bill Bensing and John Willis took the perspective of operations management and why the software industry is so prone to accidents. We’re missing things like operational definitions, blueprints, specifications, and standards.
Listen to our conversation where we talk about DevOps automated governance and debunk the myth that the software industry is so creative that no standard can (or should) be imposed.

You know how in every good movie, it takes some time for a plot to develops, and the main character is introduced only later in the movie… We’ll that’s why it took me 43 episodes of the DevOps podcast to welcome a person that started it all! I talked with Patrick Debois about challenges of introducing Generative AI and how can AI Platform Engineering help.
Platform Engineering is the pattern that successful organizations use to efficiently scale the approach, the technology, and ways of working. Yesterday, it was about building abstractions to deploy and manage apps on Kubernetes. Today, it is also about providing access to approved LLM models, RAG mechanisms, vector databases, caching, model versioning, and connectors to legacy data sources, hence AI Platform Engineering.

Damon Edwards is Senior Director, Product at PagerDuty. I’ve been aware of Damon’s impressive work in the DevOps space since my first Enterprise Technology Leadership Summit where Damon is continuously a member of the program committee. But, in the last couple of years, we’ve gotten to know each other better and engaged in some super interesting conversations and topics that I wanted to share with you.
This time, we talked about the timeless topic of providing value and whether operations, in the broader sense, can be a competitive differentiator for a company. The conversation is as much a history lesson as it is a primer for operating in the future.

John Willis is another absolute legend in software delivery and DevOps, an industry veteran working at companies such as Docker and evangelizing good technical practices. He is the co-author of The DevOps Handbook, Beyond The Phoenix Project and Investments Unlimited, and lately, he published an incredible book on Dr. William Edwards Deming called "Deming's Journey to Profound Knowledge."
I thought I knew everything there was to know about Dr. Deming - after all, what is there to know - watch out for seven data points in a row above or beyond the average and do something - and that's it! Except it's not! :)
Through his book and by hanging out with him in a weekly book club, John took me on the journey of exploring Deming, and at times, it felt like going through an escape room - just as I thought I understood everything, I'd find a new door and a whole new world. This episode is a glimpse into John's book and our ongoing conversations with the hope that we will also spark interest for Deming in others.

This episode is a special one for me since, for the first time, I have a reappearance in the show – my friend Nathen Harvey, the godfather of the DORA community! We talked about the community, the inaugural DORA Summit, and the freshly published 2023 State of DevOps Report. Nathen touched upon a couple of very interesting insights and shared a ton of advice!
An interesting insight is about trunk-based development influencing burnout. Community is working hard to explain this so feel free to join the DORA community trunk-based development discussion that is scheduled for Thursday, December 7 at 6PM UTC. Jennifer Petoff is the director of Google Cloud Platform & Technical Infrastructure Education, and a co-editor of a super popular book "Site Reliability Engineering".
I met Jennifer at the DevOps Enterprise Summit 2023 conference, where she talked about how each engineer's training needs vary depending on several factors. The talk caught my attention because, let's be honest, who can say that their learning program is so good that they have nothing to learn from Google?
People are different and in different stages of their personal and organizational journey, so they also need different kinds of support. Jennifer likes to address these differences with a 2x2 matrix considering industry experience and familiarity with your organization.
Sometimes, organizations try to apply a one-size-fits-all approach to all quadrants and wonder why the result is missing. The truth is that each quadrant requires a different learning approach.
Listen to my conversation with Dr. J. and learn more about specific techniques for each quadrant.

Clarissa Lucas is IT Audit Director, speaker, and book author. I loved talking to her because, for most of my professional career, I was dealing with the technical aspects of delivering software solutions. And I remember many times I was freaking out because I saw that "we", the technical people, and "they", the non-technical people, were not aligned on how we delivered software. Clarissa comes from that other side of the fence and is working hard to achieve the alignment of delivery and audit. We talked about auditing with agility and tearing down the fence between delivery teams and auditors.
