Welcome to "Are You Awake Yet?" I'm your host, MaryKate Smith. In this episode, we delve into the intricate relationship between stress and digestion.
Understanding Digestion: Digestion is a vital and energy-intensive process. Drawing from Chinese medicine, we can think of our digestive system as a transforming fire, breaking down and absorbing nutrients to fuel our body. Each of us has a unique constitution, which can be influenced by various factors. I share my personal journey, highlighting how being the fifth of six children may have impacted my digestive health. Through functional medicine, acupuncture, and Chinese herbs, I've strengthened my digestive system.
Stress and Its Impact on Digestion: Stress significantly affects digestion. When we're in a constant fight-or-flight mode, our body diverts energy away from digestion, leading to issues like low stomach acid, bile, and pancreatic enzymes. I recount my experiences of struggling to digest protein and fat, and how stress exacerbated my symptoms.
Behavioral Patterns and Coping Mechanisms: We explore how stress responses are often learned in childhood. Reflect on when you first felt stressed and how it manifested in your body. Identifying these patterns can help you find ways to feel present and reduce stress.
Functional Approaches to Healing: We discuss various strategies to support digestion and manage stress. Techniques like breathing exercises before and after meals, chiropractic adjustments, digestive supplements, nervous system work, and acupuncture can make a significant difference.
By addressing these root causes, we can prevent issues like leaky gut and other stress-related diseases. True healing is possible, and with the right tools, you can transform your digestive health and overall well-being.
Tune in to learn more about the intricate dance between stress and digestion, and discover practical steps to start your healing journey today.

In this episode of the "Are You Awake Yet?" podcast, host MaryKate discusses the do's and don'ts of a health journey. She advises against comparing oneself to others and instead suggests finding a practitioner who understands individual needs. Consistency and balance are emphasized over extremes, and rather than arbitrarily eliminating foods, it's recommended to undergo tests to identify specific triggers. Immediate results shouldn't be expected, as multifactorial issues require time and dedication.
MaryKate also encourages listeners to consider alternatives to the insurance model if they're not receiving the help they need. Living with certain conditions should not be accepted without seeking assistance to address the underlying causes. Taking time for recovery, rest, and play is crucial, and hope should be maintained as answers are always available when one remains open to them.
On the positive side, investing in one's health is highlighted as a priority, emphasizing the long-term benefits. Quality food and supplements are recommended, along with tracking progress to reflect on personal growth. Seeking support from others, such as functional medicine practitioners, is encouraged, and connecting with nature is suggested for its healing and meditative qualities.
Overall, the episode provides a comprehensive overview of the do's and don'ts to consider on a health journey, offering practical advice and guidance for listeners.

Today I wanted to discuss some physiological reasons a person may deal with anxiety such as blood sugar mismanagement, neurotransmitter imbalance, histamine intolerance, vitamin deficiencies, poor gut bacteria, stress, substance abuse, poor ability to process emotions/stress, being a highly sensitive individual, trauma, lack of movement or excessive movement, and chronic stress patterns. Not only do we dive into these imbalances but I give advice as to ways to help rebalance your system.

In todays podcast, I wanted to discuss how multifactorial mental health issues can be. This podcast dives deep in some of my key understandings of the body and how it works from a nutrition stand point. We dive into our food industry such as gluten, seed oils, chemicals in our food/water, vitamin deficienes, concusssions, viruses, leaky gut, internal family systems model, and trauma. There are other reasons for poor mental health, but I wanted to explain these handful of topics and also give resources of how to help yourself if you are dealing with depression, anxiety, brain fog, and overall brain inflammation.
In modern society, we have to TRY to be healthy, its not something we are inheritly born into. The more you know your body and the more you learn what your body needs to feel grounded, you can vastly improve your mental health.
