The Emotional Burden of Being the Only Black Voice in the Room
In this deeply personal episode of Black All Year, host Steph Edusei takes us back to September 2022 for a powerful reflection on the challenges of being the only Black person in predominantly white spaces. Originally recorded after a particularly frustrating experience, Steph opens up about the emotional toll of representation and the often-overlooked burden placed on Black individuals in leadership roles.

With candid honesty, Steph shares her feelings of anger and disappointment when conversations about the deteriorating experiences of Black and brown people are met with silence. She highlights the pressure to speak up, the responsibility to represent, and the free labour that comes with being the "token" Black voice in the room. Steph's reflection is a call to action for organisations to rethink their approach to diversity and representation, especially as we approach another Black History Month.

Listen as Steph challenges the status quo and emphasises why true representation goes beyond simply having a seat at the table. This episode is a must-listen for anyone committed to making a meaningful change in the fight for racial equality.

When did you first become aware of your race? Join me, Steph Edusei, along with writer, performer and producer, Risaria Langley, as, in the second part of our discussion, we explore the profound experiences that shaped our understanding of race and racism. Risaria recounts when she first became aware of her whiteness and I share my own journey, from enduring racial taunts to the unsolicited touches to my hair, revelations that only later clarified as racism.

This is at times an emotional exploration of mixed heritage and ancestry with us as we uncover the complexities that come with discovering one's roots. Sharing a friend's late discovery of her Indian ancestry, we journey through historical interracial relationships and the secrecy that often cloaked them. We dive into the history of Ghana's coastal regions, revealing how pregnant enslaved women found freedom and integration in local society.

We encourage you to listen to part one of this conversation for more honest and insightful discussion.

Is the idea of a "pure British lineage" nothing more than a myth? Join us for an eye-opening conversation as (in a release of an episode from 2022) I, Steph Edusei, am joined by Risaria Langley, and explore the complex layers of race and racism in the UK. Guided by Professor Ibram X. Kendi's Anti-racist deck, we share personal stories and insights rooted in our shared Geordie heritage from North East England. Risaria recalls a defining moment from her childhood, while I reflect on how Brexit has acted as a catalyst, revealing the entrenched racism within our society.

We tackle the contentious notion of British identity and its implications in today's multicultural landscape. What does it mean to be "indigenous British"? Through our own experiences, we highlight the fluidity of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, emphasizing the frustration of being questioned about one's origins. Our discussion underscores the vital role of recognizing and valuing the contributions of immigrants and their descendants, showing how personal relationships can break down superficial barriers and foster inclusivity.

Can saying "I don't see color" actually do more harm than good? We unpack this loaded phrase and its implications, arguing for the necessity of acknowledging racial and cultural differences to truly understand and appreciate each other. Through heartfelt anecdotes, we discuss why it's essential to recognise these differences and the discomfort caused when they are dismissed. Reflecting on Maya Angelou's wise words, "Do the best that you can until you know better and then, when you know better, do better," we stress the importance of continual growth and humility.

Don't miss this candid and thought-provoking dialogue—and tune in next week for part two.

Together, we uncover how power often operates unseen among dominant groups and the systemic advantages this creates. We discuss how privilege manifests on multiple levels—personal, interpersonal, institutional, and systemic—and how these unearned benefits favour white individuals over non-white individuals. Our conversation highlights the complex layers of intersectionality, where race intersects with gender, age, and sexual orientation, to influence experiences of discrimination.

Ever wonder how you can use your inherent power and privilege to fight racism? Ngozi stresses the importance of active and intentional efforts to dismantle systemic racism and combate personal biases. We discuss educational resources like "How to Be an Antiracist" by Ibram X. Kendi and tools such as the Harvard Implicit Association Test that can help you uncover and address your own biases. The necessity of continuous, proactive work in challenging the status quo is emphasized, ensuring the burden of education does not fall solely on marginalised communities.

We reinforce the importance of seeking guidance from individuals with lived experiences of racism and compensating them fairly.

Engagement and Equity: The Critical Role of Voting in Society

How impactful is your vote really? Join Steph Edusei as she sits down with freelance journalist and non-executive director for Newcastle Creates, Loujane Alasi, to explore the profound importance for Black communities of voter registration and voting. We'll share personal stories that highlight why casting your ballot is not just a right but a powerful tool for change, particularly for underrepresented communities. Loujane offers an insightful look into the voter registration disparities among ethnically minoritized groups and how new voter ID requirements could pose further challenges.

We talk about how voting shapes critical aspects of everyday life, from education and healthcare to child poverty and the cost of living. Often, the dismissal of voting’s significance comes from a place of privilege, where the immediate effects of policy changes aren't felt. We critique the media's role in oversimplifying complex issues and highlight the controversial voter ID requirements, questioning their necessity and the barriers they may create for voter accessibility.

Empowerment through voting is a recurring theme, especially for those in economically disadvantaged and digitally excluded populations. We break down the introduction of the voter authority certificate and the hurdles it presents. We also touch on different voting methods like postal and proxy votes, emphasizing the need for better support and information to ensure all eligible voters can participate. In this transformative discussion with me, Steph Edusei, the remarkable Tina Simbo joins us to unravel the complex threads of internalised oppression that profoundly impact marginalised communities, particularly among Black populations. With Tina's wealth of experience in social justice and community work, we dissect the ways in which acceptance of negative stereotypes seep into the psyche, influencing thoughts, behaviours and societal expectations. Our exchange breaks down the historical context of racial terminology and its role—from the Haitian Revolution to the present day—in shaping perceptions and reinforcing racial hierarchies through education and media.

Within the nuanced tapestry of racial identity, we challenge common misconceptions about the academic and professional successes of Black children, emphasising that resilience against systemic barriers often stems from a nurturing environment that fosters a positive self-image. We highlight the crucial role of community support and role models in constructing a robust racial identity, while I offer a glimpse into my personal confrontation with stereotypes. This episode is not just an exploration but a much-needed discussion on the societal pressures that lead to self-monitoring within marginalised groups and the essential understanding of historical narratives crafted to perpetuate black inferiority.

Shift your perspective as we examine the multifaceted ways internalised racism is navigated by Black individuals across the globe, from Western societies to the African continent. We discuss the importance of fostering safe mental spaces and recognising racial trauma in the current socio-political climate. Closing the discussion, we turn our focus to the youngest among us, understanding the necessity of guiding children through the realities of racism and the delicate balance of advocacy with self-care. Join us for this enlightening and empowering dialogue, designed not only to foster understanding but to ignite a fire for change.

When Marsha Hylton joined me on the podcast, her story of overcoming domestic abuse and transforming that pain into a beacon of hope for others struck a chord deep. Her expertise as a trauma-informed consultant illuminates the subtle, yet profound ways in which trauma embeds itself into our daily lives—often unnoticed, yet ever-present. Our discussion delves into the emotional undercurrents that shape our interactions and responses, emphasizing the crucial need for environments that foster safety and understanding in the healing process. Marsha's blend of clinical acumen and coaching prowess offers a lifeline to those navigating the aftermath of trauma, particularly within the realm of workplace dynamics and relationships marred by narcissistic abuse.

The insidious nature of racism and microaggressions in professional spaces cannot be overstated, and our conversation peels back the layers of how these experiences chip away at the soul. We confront the six pillars of trauma-informed practice—safety, choice, trustworthiness, empowerment, collaboration, and cultural consideration—exploring their transformative potential in crafting work environments that honor and support the complex tapestry of individual experiences. As organizations shift towards inclusivity and empathy, the dialogue around shared decision-making, trust-building, and the avoidance of re-traumatization becomes paramount. Marsha's insights serve as a compass, guiding entities in the healthcare and education sectors toward practices steeped in respect, patience, and shared experiences.

Wrapping our profound discussion, we consider the delicate dance between vulnerability and healing, and the significance of balancing the sharing of painful narratives with the safeguarding of one's emotional well-being. Acknowledging the weight of internalized oppression, we tease an upcoming event that promises to delve deeper into this topic. Join us for an exploration that transcends mere conversation, aiming to reshape perspectives and encourage growth. As you listen, you're invited to not only absorb Marsha's wisdom but also to participate in the evolution of a society that values and upholds the principles of trauma-informed care in every facet of life.

As we peel back the layers of our own identities, we often uncover strength we never knew we had. Beverley Powell, a beacon of leadership and empowerment, joins us to share how she's helping nurses from the global majority harness that strength. With a tapestry of experiences woven from her rich Jamaican heritage, Beverley, a celebrated transformation leadership coach, opens up about her inspiring journey in our latest conversation. She's not just about accolades—although being named a top 50 BAME pioneer is no small feat—her insights stem from a life dedicated to championing equality and diversity, and they resonate in the wisdom she imparts from her upcoming book.

Embracing who you are is the cornerstone of mental health advocacy, a theme that persists throughout our exchange with Beverley. We tackle the metaphorical "cape" that so many women of colour bear, considering how the pandemic has nudged us towards radical self-care and authenticity. Beverley's perspective on overcoming the weight of societal expectations reminds us of the importance of owning our full identities, imperfections and all. Her approach to leadership is not just about climbing the ranks; it's about nurturing a legacy that reverberates through the lives of others.

In creating spaces where everyone belongs, we highlight the role psychological safety plays in allowing individuals to shine. Beverley and I address the complex challenges that arise when discussing ethnicity and race, proposing that through self-enquiry and broadening our social circles, we grow and contribute to a more inclusive narrative. Our dialogue underscores the value of sharing experiences across generational lines, all while encouraging listeners to partake in the ongoing quest for connection and understanding. Beverley's vision is a reminder that our stories are the bridges that can unite communities and foster a legacy of progress and empowerment.

I had a heart-to-heart chat with the incredible Martin Hilton, renowned dancer and dance teacher who passionately shared his journey into the world of dance. His dance story begins from his school days, where he was exposed to creative dance as a part of the curriculum, which instilled in him an appreciation for the art form. Martin's journey serves as an eye-opener to how schools can utilize themes like cricket and the West Indies to make dance appealing to both genders, challenging traditional gendered perceptions of dance.

Our conversation takes a deep turn as we tackle the subject of Black spaces and collaboration in dance. Can you imagine the relief of being in a space where your guard is completely down? We both share these experiences, recounting moments spent in predominantly white spaces and the contrast of being in Black-only spaces. We delve into the importance of collaboration in choreography and the almost spiritual connection that Black-only spaces foster.

In the final leg of our discussion, we touch on a topic that demands more attention – the mental health and alcoholism struggles often faced by Black men. Martin reveals how his dual heritage has influenced his creative expression, and how he's used this influence in his latest film. The film addresses these serious issues by featuring a Black protagonist, prompting a vital dialogue about mental health and alcohol dependency within the black community. Our chat rounds up on a reflective note about the importance of creating safe spaces for expression, emphasizing that the journey of creation is as potent as the final product. So, join us on this enlightening journey of dance, collaboration, and mental health.

What happens when you're a Black person, facing discrimination and harassment in a world that often fails to provide the necessary protection and support? Join us as we explore the unique challenges faced by our guests, Loujane Alasi and Jamie Conway, who share their personal experiences of discrimination, racism and Islamophobia from a young age. Using prompts from Ibram X. Kendi's Antiracist Deck, through their stories, we examine the complexities of race, cultural identity, and the stark contrast between how society reacts to high profile cases involving white women and black women.

Delving into the topic of anti-racism, Lou Jane and Jamie discuss why it's not enough to simply be "not racist" in today's society. They highlight the importance of being actively anti-racist and how individuals can make the transition from being passive observers to catalysts for change. Drawing upon the BBC Bitesize video by John Amaechi, we tackle the essential differences between being not racist and anti-racist, and explore the importance of constant self-awareness and growth.

As we navigate the murky waters of racialisation and institutional spaces, our guests share their insights on accountability, cultural differences, and the human element in equality impact assessments. We also discuss strategies for combatting targeted violence and how we can all contribute to an antiracist future by constantly educating ourselves, checking our biases, and embracing discomfort as we learn and grow. Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation with Lou Jane and Jamie on how to make a real difference in the fight against racism.

Baby loss is more prevalent in Black communities in the UK than in white communities and yet Black women and families access the support available to them less often. Following the loss of her son, midwife Alicia Burnett decided to do something to address the lack of relevant and targeted information for Black and mixed Black heritage people who've experienced baby loss and has created Black Baby Loss Awareness Week (15 - 21 May 2023).

Hear about the challenges faced by Black women; the systemic racism that contributes to higher baby loss rates and the lack of representation that means that they don't access the available support, and find out about how Black Baby Loss Awareness Week and Alicia are working to address some of these challenges.
