Welcome to a new week of Pencil Busting, Class! We begin where we left off last week, with the "Nation's Report Card", NAEP. The National Assessment of Educational Progress is a standardized test for students across the country in 4th and 8th grade. So why are we talking about yet another standardized test? Because it's part of the National Institute of Education Sciences that President Trump gutted last week. Don't worry, the test will continue. But the people who interpret the data and make it accessible to the public will be replaced with loyalists. What could *possibly* go wrong?

Returning Pencil Buster Dr. Paul Thomas joins us to help us break down the "science of reading." This is a topic we've covered frequently, most recently with Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige this week. But Dr. Paul brings a uniquely nuanced and deep knowledge of the marketing scheme/regressive conservative political tool masquerading as a curriculum set to the show. Because Dr. Paul's dug deep, and with his 40+ year career as a literacy educator, writer, and speaker he is one educated educator on the topic. Don't be fooled by their talk of "science", Dr. Paul urges us. It is a method for censorship and limiting of educators. We can do so much better. And our students deserve so much better. Yet conservative lawamakers have written laws literally banning the teaching of anything except the so-called "science of reading." Come on, let's not remove tools from our educators' literacy teaching kits. That's just foolish.

Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige, educated educator to the extreme, Pencil Buster extraordinarie, and also Matt Damon's mom, joins us. We begin by checking in with Dr. Nancy. Since we last spoke, President Trump began his second term in office with a barrage of anti-education executive actions. Hold strong, educated educators. Then, we turn to a favorite discussion on BustED Pencils: literacy pedagogy. Nancy, with Julie Hackett, published this piece last week on "the fallacy of settled science in literacy." As in all aspects of education, literacy presents complex needs for a diverse learning population. While one teaching style works for many, no style works for all. And teachers must have a robust tool box to adapt to each learner's needs. Nancy argues that the so-called Science of Reading is actually a pedagogical fad, promoting a simple solution to a complex problem. And that's no solution at all. To start learning more, check out Robert Tierney and P David Pearson's open-access book Fact-Checking the Science of Reading.

Dr. Tim and Producer Jess look at trending news concerning the federal Department of Education. President Trump ran on a platform that included dismantling this department. He's tapped a wrestling media megabillionaire to lead it in order to end it. And we wait with bated breath for an executive order declaring it's death. On Friday morning, Democratic lawmakers in Washington DC attempted to enter the Department of Education main building and were denied access. News sources differed widely in how they covered the event. NBC put it much as we did, 'House Democrats denied access...' while sharing a video of their confrontation. On the other side of the media aisle, Fox raised the level of aggression significantly, with the headline 'Democrats ambush Education Dept in attempt to force meeting". We urge you to take extra time in these coming days, weeks, months, and years to read beyond the headlines. And read beyond your first choice media source, not only to broaden your perspective but to gain additional clarity. Finally, we plead with you all- keep those critical thinking muscles sharp and flexible, we need them!!!

Class, on Wednesday we talked with Randi Weingarten, president of AFT. With Randi, we discussed the very real threat of schools becoming 'wargrounds' for I.C.E. raids. Now, as Dr. Johnny quickly points out, we don't mean ice like frozen water. In this episode, our educated educators dive into the Immigration and Custody Enforcement (I.C.E.) and the history of schools being part of a designation as 'sensitive locations'. That designation barred I.C.E. activities except under extreme cases. No more, due to President Trump's revocation of the policy. This creates great conflict in schools especially. Teachers serve as temporary guardians for their students, acting in loco parentis during their time together.
Schools simply aren't safe for students. They ought to be, but they're just not. And teachers, acting in loco parentis seek to minimize the harm their students face. There is no way for I.C.E. enforcement activity to be non-harmful in a school. Children will be traumatized. So what CAN teachers do? And what do our laws currently say students are entitled to?

Chad Holmes, host of the WXCO morning show and sports broadcaster for that station, joins us to bust some pencils! He brings updates on the winter sports season as we near the playoffs. With many teams battling illness and injury, games are being postponed and rescheduled. However, plan to catch Chad broadcast the Storm game this Saturday at 2pm on WXCO. You can catch that on your Civic Media app, online, or in central Wisconsin at FM 98.9 or AM 1230 terrestrial dials. Chad and our educated educators also discuss some upcoming changes from the WIAA that will impact the next football seasons, as covered by our pal Jimmie Kaska here.

Randi Weingarten, President of AFT and a recurring Pencil Buster, joins us for this very special class in session. In the first days of his second term, President Trump's administration stripped schools of designation as ‘sensitive locations’. That means Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials are no longer prohibited from arresting individuals suspected of lacking proper migration documentation in schools. This will further turn schools away from being places of learning and community and into places of fear. As President of the second largest teacher’s union in the nation, Randi put it into a simple urging: “don’t make schools a warground”. In this country of laws and rights, EVERY child has the right to go to school, decided by SCOTUS in Plyler v. Doe. Let those schools be places of growth and engagement, not fear and trauma.

Class, it's been a chaotic two weeks since January 20th. That strange confluence of a day commemorated the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the second inauguration of Donald Trump to the presidency. It's important in these chaotic moments to take some time to check in with each other. Because as Educators Amplified's Teacher Joanna and Teacher Hallie often remind us, us educated educators need to be the regulated ones in the room. So take a few minutes. Breathe with us. Remember that to be an advocate for democracy in these moments is a form of resistance. And clear your head so you can be the calm, caring, compassionate voice in your world.

Class, you know the drill, get out your pencils and let's start busting! New Pencil Buster, Coach Jeff Matczak of Kaukauna High School's wrestling program, joins us. His style of coaching works to balance developing each athlete's physicality AND mentality for success. He focuses on working to train regulatory skills like steady breathing and recognition of anxiety. Coach Matczak teaches his wrestlers so much more than how to take down an opponent. He teaches how to build up, from the inside out. And Coach Matczak teaches necessary life skills that his athletes will use as they become active citizens in this world. As he tells his wrestlers, "it doesn't end here."

For some of us, like Dr. Johnny, math comes easy. For many of us, like Dr. Tim, math brings intense anxiety and feelings of "I just can't!" Well, our newest Pencil Buster Dr. Aditya Nagrath knows a thing or two about mathematics anxiety. Aditya's business is helping students and teachers navigate through that anxiety into a place of empowerment. And he's literally written the book on it. Additionally, Aditya developed Elephant Learning, an online portal for math tutoring where students can learn years of math in just weeks. Whether you're a math whiz like Johnny or a math mouse like Tim (and Jess), Elephant Learning can help you deepen your knowledge and appreciation for math!

Last Monday, the 45th and now 47th President of the United States took the oath of office and began a second term that looks more like a reign than an administration. Since the immediate aftermath of the election in November, we've tried to name the moment. In the limbo between election and inauguration, we've named this moment contradiction– hopelessness and perseverance. We named it despair and determination. And we grappled for what to name what comes next. Now here we are in what comes next, and it's time to get to work. On Inauguration Day last week, coinciding with a day to remember the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. we witnessed an extremely powerful example of how to resist the weight and darkness of Trump's second Presidential term. The Right Reverend Mariann Budde delivered the sermon for the Inaugural interfaith service. In it, she calls for unity, not uniformity or passivity, but a unified dedication to our people and country. And she directed a plea to the newly inaugurated President to have mercy on all those who are paralyzed by fear in this moment. Her words fell on deaf ears in the front row, but rose as strength in ours.

Class, please welcome our newest Pencil Busters, Myra Roldan and Leah Manoni! These sisters understand the challenge of labeling AI as good or bad, ethical or unethical. They know the enormous potential for AI to revolutionize our workforce and education systems for good. Just as well, they know the equally significant threats AI poses to privacy and genuine learning. How? Because they run UnDesto AI, a boutique AI company working with companies and schools to determine their AI readiness and build a cohesive strategy to prioritize privacy AND efficiency. Myra, Founder and CEO of UnDesto, literally wrote the book on the dangers of using AI without training leading to massive data breaches- The Curious Case of ChatterBot GPT, available February 1st, 2025. Leah, Head of Operations at UnDesto brings a focus on digital ethics to the table. Together, they work with business executives, educators, and anyone looking to expand their AI knowledge and expertise! And incredibly, today they help Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny bridge their long divide over AI.

Civic Media sports editor, Jimmie Kaska- our very own Coach K- joins us to discuss the upcoming winter sports finale. With regionals just around the bend of the weekend for basketball, hockey, and wrestling, it's an exciting time for a sports broadcaster! On that note, we take a few minutes to commemorate Bob Uecker, Milwaukee hero and baseball broadcasting legend. As a fellow broadcaster, Jimmie learned so much from Bob- primarily to just be yourself. We'll miss Mr. Baseball when the Brewers' season opens, and we'll carry his legacy of humor and good cheer onwards.

Today, January 20th, marks two very different occasions. This day, January 20th, is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. A day when many people stop their usual work to dedicate themselves to community service and reflect on on all that we as humans share with one another. Today is also the day when Donald Trump will be inaugurated to a second term as President of these United States. And that feels like a bitter combination to us. How can we hold both of these memorials on the same day and move towards civic engagement?

Is AI good or bad? Well now that's just far too simplistic a question. Jason Buccheri, one of Canada's top education strategists and the host of the podcast, Education Matters. He's also our newest Pencil Buster, so let's be sure to give him a hearty, enthusiastic, American welcome! In his work, Jason strives to help educators connect and re-connect with what makes teaching rewarding. Specifically, he helps educators utilize tools that cut through the noise and slog of aspect of the job so that educators can focus on what matters most: forming strong relationships with their students. Some of those tools utilize AI. At the same time, AI has proven a dangerous, anti-education tool in some hands. So Jason urges us: study the effects before making a decision. Study the media ecology of how it all interacts, and then decide if AI tools are right for you and your classroom.

Happy Friday, Class! Today, we have a very special new Pencil Buster. Kane Paxton, one of Dr. Johnny's former hockey players on his Washington State University team, and now one of his assistant coaches, joins us. In playing hockey, Kane learned how to balance a full life. From schoolwork to athletics to a personal life, it was hockey that helped him develop the camaraderie and accountability to excel consistently across his pursuits.

Class, this is a truly special session. Dr. Howard Gardner, renowned psychologist and educator who developed the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, now joins the ranks of Pencil Busters! In 1983, Dr. Gardner rattled the very foundation of education when he proposed that there were more ways to be "intelligent" than could be represented on the Stanford Binet IQ test. Rather, Howard asserted, every human being possesses natural strengths and affinities that we can term intelligence. Over 40 years later, Howard is still advancing the causes of excellent education and recognition of each person's talents. He joins us to discuss how teachers can 'spend less time in the weeds' and more time 'putting it all together' when it comes to navigating educational materials and each student's individual needs. For Dr. Gardner's latest written works, go to his webpage. Also make sure to check out The Good Project for materials on promoting excellence, engagement, and ethics in education.

Happy Monday, Class, let's get to some pencil busting! Our pal Michael Petrili- read the sarcasm on this, please- President of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute wrote a piece last week seeking to compare education reform in 'red' and 'blue' states. To put it bluntly, we're not impressed. Michael misses several key issues and dodders around pesky little issues such as accountability while bemoaning a supposed lack of accountability in public schools. The article leaves us wondering: Is either of the major political parties in the United States interested in education reform that truly benefits our next generations?

All music is political, so sayeth Dr. Johnny. This week, we're listening hard for the music being played about education. A new presidential administration will take office in just 9 days, and they're playing some loud discordant tunes when it comes to the department of education. What ramification might ensue from these chords? Is there any harmony to be found with the second Trump presidency? How can we tune out the noise and focus on what matters- getting to work to improve education, not to reinforce schooling?
