A co-operative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically controlled enterprise. Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, selfresponsibility, democracy,equality, equity and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2025 as the second International Year of Cooperatives (IYC 2025). This initiative aims to promote the cooperative model globally and recognize its significant contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The resolution encourages member states, UN entities, and stakeholders to support cooperatives by creating enabling environments, raising awareness, and fostering collaboration. Emphasis is placed on the role of cooperatives in driving inclusive development, improving food security, and empowering marginalized communities. The theme for IYC 2025 is "Cooperatives Build a Better World," highlighting the transformative power of cooperation in addressing global challenges. The resolution further invites member states to consider establishing national committees, to plan, stimulate and harmonize the activities of the governmental and non-governmental agencies in preparation for the event.
