Chemistry is of enormous importance in everyday life: almost everything that exists, and all that we see, make and eat is composed of molecules. The unravelling of molecular structure is a key activity of chemists. In these three video tracks, Dr Mike Bullivant looks briefly at three of the spectroscopic techniques that are used to determine the structure of chemical compounds - infrared spectroscopy, proton (1H) and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (nmr) spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. This material is taken from The Open University course S205 The molecular world.

What is most cited experiment in the history of psychology? Where did ideas like sending children to the naughty step and using time-out’s originate?
According to John Broadus Watson, psychology should be the science of observable behavior. He saw psychology as the study of people's actions with the ability to predict and control those actions and it was this belief that set the stage for behaviorism, which soon rose to dominate psychology for many years. Watson’s ideas culminated in the popular experiment ‘Little Albert’ in which he tried to condition a child to feel fear, however in recent years the ethics of the experiment have often been criticized in addition to its results but the legacy of conditioning remains popular as do many of its principles. The following 6 audio tracks give an insight Watson, his experiments and how his ideas influenced completely different fields. -
In this SeedNL podcast exclusive miniseries entitled, “Getting it Right”, we dive into how Plant Breeders' Rights and Farmers' Rights are frequently framed as contradicting ways for how seeds are accessed, developed, sold and used. These rights and corresponding policies have a significant impact on the seed sector, and therefore also on food and nutrition security around the world.
This series facilitates dialogue with and between three experts who talk about their different perspectives on the discussion - and find collaborative ways forward.
SeedNL is a public private partnership that aims to strengthen the seed sector in low and middle income countries by helping farmers get better access to better quality seeds. We believe in partnerships and an integrated approach that respects and includes the formal and the so-called informal seed sector. We aim to create a safe space for multi-stakeholder discussions, also on more controversial topics such as the one focused on in this podcast. For more information, go to seednl.nl or send us an email at [email protected]
