Our guest today is registered dietitian nutritionist Terese Scollard, MBA, RDN, LD, FAND, FASPEN, joining our latest podcast series exploring practical applications for medical equipment. In this episode, we will be discussing how dietitians can utilize hand grip dyanometers (DINA-MOM-ETERS) in nutrition assessment. Terese has over 47 years of experience in hospitals, clinics, and private practice in Arizona, Oregon, and Washington State. She was a member of an Academy and ASPEN collaborative workgroup which jointly created the 2012 Consensus Characteristics of Adult Disease-Related Malnutrition, and continues to serve on Academy and ASPEN committees. Terese also owns a nutrition consulting company, MySurgeryPlate LLC, to audit, educate and consult on effective and compliant malnutrition documentation, consult on malnutrition informatics, and teach handgrip strength examination and documentation for malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty, to promote program development surrounding nutrition in preparation for and recovery from major surgery. Leah Hidalgo, RD, LDN is a Washington D.C. based Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, who seamlessly transitioned from a successful nursing career to her current role. Cynthia is a home tube feeding expert, educator and strategist having worked in homecare for 25 years passionately facilitating patients’ successful transition from hospital to home on tube feeding. She works to promote positive clinical outcomes and believes a patient’s positive relationship with their feeding tube impacts compliance and quality of life. She developed her passion for nutrition support interning at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Southern California. Most recently, she worked for Coram/CVS Specialty Infusion Services as their National Tube Feeding Manager. Andrea Adler, RD, CSPCC, LD, is a board certified specialist in pediatric critical care nutrition and has worked as a Pediatric Dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for over 19 years. She’s worked with the neonatal population since 2004 and, about 10 years ago, expanded her practice to include pediatric patients with intestinal failure, liver failure and organtransplantation. She currently volunteers as RD Co-Chair of the Pediatric Intestinal Failure Work Group Subcommittee of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and was Andrea recently received the Recognized Neonatal Dietitian award from Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Travis Masterson, Ph.D., is the Director of the Health, Ingestive Behavior, and Technology Laboratory and the Broadhurst Career Development Professor for the Study of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at The Pennsylvania State University. Heearned his bachelor of science degree in exercise and wellness at Brigham Young University, followed by a master of science degree in health promotion also at Brigham Young University and doctoral degree in nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State University where he also served as a USDA Childhood ObesityPrevention Fellow. Dr. Masterson is the recipient of numerous fellowships and grants, and his research focuses primarily on food cue reactivity and how our food environment shapes our food choices and eating behaviors. He uses a variety of novel technologies and methodologies to accomplish this goal,including Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), immersive virtual reality (VR), and ecological momentary assessment (EMA), a method of research which studiespeople’s thoughts and behaviors in their daily lives.
