Jonathan Pezza's "Curious Matter Anthology" is not your everyday podcast. It's a bridge between past and present, a time machine that takes listeners back to the golden era of science fiction and supernatural horror, and then catapults them back into the future. It's an ode to the pulp era of science fiction, an era whose stories have influenced some of the greatest filmmakers of our time, and it's a tribute to the largely unrecognized authors who penned these tales.
Pezza is the creative force behind this anthology podcast. A seasoned storyteller and filmmaker, Jonathan has channeled his skills and passions into crafting a unique auditory experience. Inspired by the original Star Wars Radio Play from 1981 and the forgotten stories from the pulp era, he set out to create a show that pushes the envelope of audio storytelling, all while shining a light on the works that inspired the great directors of the 70s and 80s.
The Curious Matter Anthology is a bi-weekly drama and anthology podcast featuring a full cast, with a total of 19 episodes at the time of writing. Each installment is part of a 3-5 episode mini-series based on short stories from the world's best Sci-fi and Supernatural Horror writers. But it's not just about the stories; it's about how they're told.
Over the past three seasons, the show has garnered more than 600,000 listens, received a slew of awards, was featured in Podcast Magazine, Bleeding Cool, Medium and other media outlets. In 2024 the show made it to #4 in the Apple Podcasts US Science-Fiction Chart and #1 in the UK.
What sets Curious Matter Anthology apart is its commitment to creating a fully immersive auditory experience. It's not just about telling a story; it's about transporting the listener into the story's world. This commitment led Pezza and his team to shift to binaural audio early on, a decision that has dramatically enhanced the listening experience.
The results are stunning. Listeners are not merely passive recipients of the story but active participants, able to visualize the world they're hearing. This innovative approach to audio storytelling has allowed the Curious Matter Anthology to stand out.
For Season 3, Tiffany Smith (Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Guardians of the Galaxy 3) joined the team to star, produce, and co-voice direct, along with an expanding cast featuring the talent of Todd Stashwick, Phil LaMarr, Tracie Thoms, Colin Ferguson, Kevin Smith, Tricia Helfer, and many more.
