  • Life is unpredictable and as much as we try, we can never truly be in control. Everything changes and it is those changes that can make or break us, if we allow them to.

The challenge is to cultivate the ability to truly accept whatever comes, because it is only by accepting change that we can truly live and experience life with freedom.

When life is going well, acceptance comes easily, but what happens when you are faced with something that tests every part of your being?

My guest this week has had to accept a part of himself that has tested his mental, emotional and physical self in ways that many of us can only imagine.

Jonathan has taught me that the capacity of the human mind to overcome hardship is astonishing, and that acceptance is a choice - a hard one, but in his words, most definitely a choice.

So, if you find yourself struggling to make sense of what you are going through, I hope my conversation with Jonathan will help you to begin your own journey towards accepting life on life’s terms.

Who am I? It's a question that has swirled around in my head for many years and filled endless pages of my journals.

Never feeling like you fit in the world or with yourself feels incredibly lonely. Like some kind of disconnect you search to fuse together the pieces to feel complete. It’s a path that can take you everywhere and anywhere other than to you.

We all deserve to feel like we are at home in our skin and as my guest this week has taught me, the key to that door lies with you and you only. Annika Samuelson, has been on a journey to find that key that many of us could never truly imagine. One that has haunted her from the day she was born.

Yet at every hurdle and challenge, she found the courage to never compromise who she knew she was deep down. The beauty of life is to not fit in, and so I hope this episode can help you to embrace who you are, because when you accept yourself, the world has no choice but to do the same.

  • How often do you pay attention to the words that swirl around in your head day in day out? The ones that constantly speak to you like a never-ending stream of conscious chatter.

And if you are wondering what I am talking about, take a moment to pay close attention to the one voice that is speaking to you right now - the one asking you if you have such a voice!

This is the one that asks and answers its own questions, going back and forth worrying about things over which it has no control over.

This voice is the narrator to your outside world, how it shapes you and your reality. It is the link between your past, present and future stories you tell.

And because I realised that my own was clouding my reality, I worked hard to reframe it into one that is clearer, inviting and filled with optimism.

So, if you find yourself stuck in a narrative that leaves you tired and full of self-doubt, then I hope this episode finds its way to you, and just know it is possible to quieten it with a little reframing.

  • Valuing how successful you are based on how much is in your bank account or how many followers you have on social media, is one way to ticket to feeling completely unsuccessful.

Success can never be found in something you can buy, get or be given - because the goal posts you set will always move. But when society pushes a narrative that bigger is better, how can you let go of external pressures that dictate what it means to be successful?

For my guest this week, it was only when he reached breaking point that he ‘woke’ up and realised that he was actually one of the most successful and wealthy humans alive. Sam Thomas has worked hard to define his own version of what success means - a definition that is built on all the things that money can never buy. He is now on a mission to spread his message that success is something that only matters to you and the people who believe and support you.

So, wherever you are in your journey of figuring out what it means to be successful, wealthy or valued, I hope this episode will help you to write your own definition of success - one that ‘feels’ right for you.

  • When was the last time you felt ‘alive’ - truly alive? The kind that awakens your soul and spirit with a flurry of butterflies.

Perhaps you can’t remember and instead feel like you are living on autopilot - just going through the motions of life. Some might call it ‘existing’ but for my guest this week, their experience of feeling a constant “restless emptiness” became almost too much to bear.

On a mission to heal his own wounds and to live a life full of colour, Corey Keyes became a sociologist to find out if other people felt the same. His research eventually led to him coining the terms “languishing” and its antidote “flourishing”, or good mental health.

But, what saved Corey from his past was something that couldn’t be found in books or academia, but something much closer to home. So, if you ever find yourself feeling low, sad or as if this world is weighing you down, I hope my conversation with Corey will help you to build a buffer against the pressures of modern life and find true flourishing.

  • Feeling as though you are different and that you don’t quite ‘fit,’ can leave you questioning yourself and battling to find your place in the world and your purpose.

And when your entry into this world isn’t one where you are loved and nurtured by the two people who created you, that feeling of being the odd one out, is ever more present. You may find yourself looking for your purpose in all kinds of places, places that only ever offer a short term fix to fill the void. Yet, when you look outside of yourself, you discover not only that you are not so different after all, but that you are far more than what your circumstances dedicated.

My guest this week knows this all too well and found his own sense of meaning in the world, by helping others to realise the same can be true for them. So, if you have ever felt hopeless or that you don’t belong in this world, then I hope my conversation with Theo Krynauw will help you to know that you do, and that when we meet people through a lens of understanding instead of judgement, we can offer another a little piece of hope to keep them going.

  • I have been at a complete crossroads for a little while now. I describe it like one of those you find in the outback of Australia. Where you can see for miles and miles either way, yet you have no idea what might be on the horizon of either – so you just stay sat in the middle sweating it out under the scorching sun, until you fall into a complete and utter burnout. And burn I did.

You see, when you feel so drained and exhausted, your decisions feel muddled and so you ask everyone around you for their advice – well at least this is what I did. But for every nugget of wisdom that was shared with me, I found myself even more unable to choose which path to follow. Do I take the path that my head was pulling me towards, or do I begin to walk the path my head was calling me to walk.

With them both shouting and vying for my attention, I turned to the internet and asked, “should I follow my head or my heart…gut or intuition”?

After a lot of digging and a lot of contradictory opinions, I concluded that it was me who had the answer all along, I just needed to do what I had always done before in moments of confusion and uncertainty – take a moment to pause, breathe and welcome both my head and heart in.

So, if you find yourself in unfamiliar territory or unsure as to which path to follow next, I hope this episode will help you to feel a little less alone in your own experience – and to know that both your head and your heart are only ever doing their best to look out for you.

  • What comes to mind when you hear the word 'abandonment.'

Perhaps, it takes you back to a difficult time and place in your childhood. Maybe you recall a story you heard on the news of a baby being left on the doorstep. Perhaps it reignites the pain you felt when your partner left you for someone else. Or maybe the humiliation you felt the time you spoke up at work and were immediately shut down. No matter what kind of picture the word abandonment paints - feelings of being left behind, unlovable and unimportant can infiltrate every relationship you encounter.

The word abandonment hadn't entered the pages of my own journal until recently when I began to explore the feelings I felt after a break-up. The more I wrote, the more I began to realise that I had been repeating patterns and playing the same old narratives over and over again.

Curious to learn more about where my fear of abandonment may have come from, and more importantly how I could rewrite my script, I sought the help of psychotherapist, Susan Anderson. Susan’s vulnerability and willingness to share her own experience of overcoming her fear of abandonment, has helped me to look at my own wounds with a new perspective and understanding of this universal human emotion.

If you are going through a heartbreak or a loss, if you feel alone or fear that you will never be loveable, then I hope this episode will help you to understand more about your own experience and most importantly how to recover from abandonment.

  • Have you ever looked at someone else's life and wished it was yours? Maybe you feel stuck, unfulfilled and as though you are just going through life on autopilot. Or perhaps you have a longing for something more, but think that it’s all too late for you.

We are conditioned to think that the way to win at life is to have a 2.4 family, a stable job and a nice house with a garden, so why is it that so many of us who seemingly have all of this, are unhappy?

It was a question that kept nagging away at my guest for this week, who at the beginning of the second half of her life, made the brave decision to leave everything she knew to embark on an adventure that many of us only talk about.

Anne Boyd, left her career in academia and life as an empty-nester to pursue her dream of travel and being an actual, real, full-time writer and writing coach at the age of 52. So if you have ever wondered if it’s too late to change your life, then let this conversation convince you otherwise.

  • It’s something so intrinsic to our very being, yet at the same time, almost impossible to define.

From the moment we enter the world, to the moment we depart it, love is the one thing that we all search for. Like the air we breathe, we cannot live without it. We seek it in people, places and things, yet the purest form of love surely demands nothing in return and must be nurtured from within first.

My own relationship with love has been complicated and was tested a few years ago, when my heart was broken in ways I didn’t even know was possible. Like a tsunami, it engulfed me and swept me up leaving me gasping for breath.

But it also made me realise that whilst I had poured love onto another, I rarely offered myself even a drop. So when I came across Antony and Margie, I just knew that the way they described their love was something that we all needed to hear. Because perhaps love is not so much about the bolts of lightning or racing heartbeats - perhaps it’s something so much simpler and ordinary – something that is accepting and allowing without judgement. And something that is not only experienced with another but through the way we look at life.

Welcome to Season Two of Flip It!

It feels so wonderful to be back, and to be sharing more stories and voices, from more incredible humans.

And so to begin the next Chapter of Flip It, I have, after some gentle encouragement from you, decided to start flip the script and begin the season by sharing my story.

So, I hope that what you hear may give you a little insight into my own storybook and how all the chapters that came before, led me to creating Flip It, and to you.

But more than anything, I hope that there may be a word or two that can help you to feel a little less alone in your own experiences, and to remind you that your story and voice deserves to be heard. Because, believe me when I say, it might just be the gift that gives someone the strength to face another day.

  • There are no words to describe it.

Heartbreak is like an explosion of your soul. It shatters every part of you, leaving you in pieces that you have no idea how to put back together.

You can read, watch and listen to as many stories as you want, but nothing can prepare you for the brutality of heartbreak. You will never be the same again. Your heart won’t ever be the same again, but you will be ok and your heart won’t stay empty for long.

In the aftermath of its destruction, you will discover a whole new chapter full of characters, who will hold your hand as you climb your way out of the rubble. And with everyday that passes, you will feel your heart growing stronger and stronger until you find it overflowing with more love than ever before.

Love and heartbreak are meant for one another, so don’t deny yourself the magic of either. Heartbreak is the silent…hidden gift of love.

If you enjoyed this episode of Flip It, I would be hugely grateful if you could rate, review and subscribe. It really will help me to discover and share more stories and voices that deserve to be heard.

  • There has to be a reason why we risk having our hearts broken over and over again, when the experience is enough to leave you fighting for survival.

The narrative of heartbreak is woven into our life from childhood. The cartoons, books, TV shows and films we are exposed to are littered with stories of love and loss. From Disney’s 'Beauty and The Beast' to Shakespeare’s 'Romeo and Juliet' and everything in between, we are well acquainted with heartbreak.

But when it actually happens to you, everything you thought you knew about heartbreak evaporates into oblivion. There is nothing that can prepare you for the stabbing, then throbbing, then aching pain it leaves in your body.

The only way to not suffer its brutality, is to never love at all and what kind of life would that be? But perhaps if we paid more attention to this unique and universal emotional pain, then maybe we could find a way to knit our hearts back together with a fragility that is even stronger than before.

My guest for Part One of my exploration into heartbreak is the journalist Florence Williams, who went on a deeply personal and scientific inquiry to find meaning again after saying goodbye to her 25 year marriage.

So, I hope that wherever you are in your own journey of love, our conversation will not only comfort you, but also help you to realise that not only is there is good reason for the pain you feel, but that there is also a way out of it.

  • It’s a story we could all write, it’s a script we have all read and it’s a page that all of us will turn again. The plot is centred around the universal experience of Rejection.

    Why me?

    What’s wrong with me?

    Why wasn’t I enough?

What was it about me that they didn’t like?

The sting of rejection can wound the most resilient of souls and can leave you questioning the very fabric of your being. But the truth is not all of our dreams are meant to be fulfilled and we are not everyone’s ‘cup of tea.’ But even more true, is that when one door closes there may just be a bigger and brighter door waiting to be opened.

Whilst we can’t choose when, where or who rejects us, we can choose how we view it, as my guest this week on Flip It shares so beautifully. Patty LaRoche, is the author of ‘A Little Faith Lift: Finding Joy Beyond Rejection’- who through her years as a high school teacher and as the wife of a professional baseball player, discovered the endless rewards to be found in rejection.

My story/s of rejection won’t be the same as yours, but I hope that what you hear from my conversation with Patty, may help you to flip the script and look at rejection as nothing to be ashamed of or to fear, because when the sting fades, you too may even feel its beauty.

  • Most of us go through moments of feeling as though something isn’t quite right - as though perhaps we have taken the wrong path. But when the path you had been walking suddenly hits a dead end without warning, it can leave you completely and utterly bewildered.

When we feel lost, we can feel a million miles away from where we once were or where we want to be. We look for the answers in places, people and things in the hope that we will be shown the way back.

But there is one place, a place that if we pay attention to and greet with curiosity, we can find all the answers we ever need. A place that feels like a big warm hug. A place that doesn’t judge or ask anything of you. A place that feels like home. That place is nature.

Nature allows you to let go of the myriad of false expectations, social constructs and noise that derails you, and instead reconnects you with yourself in the purest form. It reminds you that you are nature and that by reimagining your relationship with nature, you need never feel lost again.

So, if you are trying to find your way out of the darkness or unsure as to which way to turn next, then I hope my conversation with Tansy Dowman will help you to find a lasting friendship with nature.

Not feeling like you matter, that you don’t fit or that your voice deserves to be heard is a familiar feeling to many of us.

Afraid to stand out, we conform and squeeze ourselves into the narrow margins of societal norms. But, history has shown us that every transformative force of positive change has only ever happened with a disruption of the status quo.

It’s not easy to go against the grain, to risk being rejected, isolated or deemed difficult. It takes tenacity, vulnerability and bravery, but everyday there are people who are doing just that.

My guest this week is Sophia Ufy Ukor, who is one of those who has never allowed her past to define her and has gone out of her way to amplify the voices and stories of everyday ‘disruptors’ - people like you and me who took daring risks to pave the way for change.

My conversation with Sophia has reminded me that my voice matters just as much as the next person’s and that it’s only by championing each other, that we can create a space for positive change to happen. None of us need to be defined by our past or to try and fit into a hole that feels too tight or too big. There is a place for us all in this world, I hope you find yours.

  • Solitude has a long history and has been documented in stories, art and in real life for centuries. Perhaps our interest is not that surprising given that we spend one third of our waking life alone.

Yet the way we view solitude today is often tied to negative narratives and preconceptions that perceive anything other than human connection as something to avoid. But solitude and loneliness, as I have been exploring, are not the same thing and according to my guest this week, the two have become confused. So how can we look at alone time differently and invest in it as something that is integral to our happiness, wellbeing and meaningful relationships?

My guest this week for Part Two of my exploration into solitude is Heather Hansen, who along with her coauthors have spent several years researching what time alone means to different people around the world. Their book, ‘Solitude, The Science and Power of Being Alone’, presents time alone as a place of choice where we can best connect with what really matters to us - our values, interests and our emotions.

How much time do you spend alone?

It’s a question I have been asking myself over and over again. Well actually it’s a question everyone around me has been asking over and over again. It’s got to the point where I have become so self-conscious that I find myself justifying my alone time.

Loneliness carries a lot of stigma and shame and according to the World Health Organisation is a global health concern. Since time began humans were programmed to connect in order to survive, but I’m wondering if we have confused loneliness with alone time.

I no longer live in the city, work in one of the world's busiest newsrooms or live with someone else. By default I spend much more time on my own than I used to but for the most part I don’t feel lonely, which has made me curious to explore what constitutes loneliness and what is the difference between loneliness and solitude.

So If, like me you have found yourself conscious as to how much or how little time you spend alone, or if you are unsure as to what constitutes loneliness, then I hope my next two conversations will help you to reframe solitude as a way to rest, recharge and as an opportunity to hit the reset button.

For Part One, I am joined by Jade Angeles Fitton, a writer whose beautiful and deeply personal memoir 'Hermit', documents her escape from an abusive relationship into a life of intentional solitude where she healed, restored and embraced life alone.

There are more than 8 billion people on this planet and by the time your head hits the pillow tonight, that number will have risen by several hundred thousand more.

It’s the enormity of this planet that has always made me wonder why we cross paths with people at certain times and why we don’t with others. Is it by chance, coincidence or is it through the choices we make?

The answer to this question will never likely be known, but I do know that on any given day we may miss the opportunity to hear a new voice or story, simply because we choose to focus on our differences rather than our similarities.

My guest this week is someone whose life on paper couldn’t be more different than mine, and is exactly the reason why this episode is so special. We connected because we both chose to look past the external and meet each other just as we are - two people taking up space on this incredible planet, simply navigating similar experiences.

Patrick Dougher is a kindred spirit, whose life has thrown him a multitude of identities that he has chosen to dismiss, in order to find one where he can be seen and heard as his most authentic self.

I hope you enjoy our conversation and that it encourages you to meet every person without agenda, judgement or expectation and with a sense of gratitude that in a planet of 8 billion people, your paths were lucky enough to meet.
