Iâve always known how lucky I am to have parents who believed in my dream â even when it didnât look practical or promising. Their support gave me the freedom to take music seriously, to treat it like a real path instead of just a hobby.
Of course, it hasnât always been easy. Even with support, choosing a creative path comes with doubt, fear, and a million unknowns. But when you grow up feeling like the people who know you best believe youâre capable â not just talented, but actually capable â it shapes the way you move through the world.
This conversation is a reflection on what that support looked like, how it helped me navigate the messy middle of making music into a career, and why I believe the way we parent creative kids matters more than we think. If you've ever felt torn between your passion and practicality â or if you're a parent wondering how to support your child without pushing â I think youâll relate.

Struggling with pitch doesnât mean youâre tone deaf. Most of the time, it means you just havenât trained your brain, ears and/or vocal folds yet. Pitch is learnableâand with the right tools, anyone can improve.
In this conversation, we break down why pitch issues happen, how long it actually takes to improve, what to do if youâve been told (or told yourself) that you âjust canât singâ and how important pitch really is (spoiler - itâs not the end all, be all!). If youâve ever wondered whether youâre hopeless or if your ear is just âbad,â this episode might change everything.

What if singing powerfully had less to do with pushing, and more to do with control? Ali came in thinking she needed to âdo moreâ with her voiceâbut what really changed things was doing less. This coaching session shows what happens when a singer shifts their focus from volume to balance, and learns how to smooth out their sound without losing strength.

I went to musical theatre school over 10 years ago, and it was a wild rideâfrom combat and dance classes to putting on shows and filming movie musicals. It wasnât a walk in the park, but it definitely shaped who I am as a performer.
I recently got in touch with some of my old classmates to see where their career is at now and what theyâve learned since school. If youâve ever thought about going to musical theatre school or wondered what it actually leads to, this is a real look at what that path can look like.

Starting voice training can feel overwhelming, especially when everythingâs wrapped in scientific terms no one remembers. Most singers donât need to memorize words like âthyroarytenoidâ or âcricothyroidâ to improve their voice. What actually helps? Understanding what your vocal muscles do â not what theyâre called.
I sat down with VTS coach Kate, a vocal anatomy enthusiast and expert, to talk about how to understanding vocal anatomy can help you coach yourself and others much better. If you are a singer, vocal coach, music teacher or director and want to understand how your voice actually works (without going to med school), this is a great place to begin.

What happens when creative collaboration crosses a line?
In this episode, I sat down with Coach Juliana to read and react to some of the most dramatic, cringe-worthy, and thought-provoking AITA (Am I The Ahole) posts from Reddit, all with an artistic twist.
We cover:
The ethics of using someone elseâs poetry for your songsHow to set boundaries in creative relationshipsWhen inspiration becomes a violation of trustSinging in a language you donât speakIf youâve ever had someone cross a line with your workâor if youâve ever wondered if you might have crossed one yourselfâthis oneâs for you.

This week on From Singer to Artist, weâre joined by actor, artist, and VTS student Ari Welkom, aka Avatari, for a powerful conversation about music, healing, and being real.
After struggling with addiction, Ari found his way back to himself through musicâand created Mental Health & Music, a collaborative space for artists to talk about the connection between creativity and mental wellness.
We also talk about why authenticity attracts the right fans, how singing is deeper than sound, and what it really means to use your voice as a tool for connection.
Whether youâre coming back to music after a hard season, or just trying to figure out how to show up more fully in your artâthis oneâs for you.

Frustrated about that crack in the middle of your voice? That happens when youâre abruptly switching from one register to the next. Understanding your registers - chest voice, head voice and mix voice - and what happens when you crack is going to be key to smooth out your break and make it seem like you have one seamless voice.
Letâs talk about these three registers and what you can do to balance them out, not just to create seamless transitions but to learn how to sing any note in any way.

Singing live can be brutalâespecially when youâre not used to it or you took a break for a while. I worked with singer Cam - whoâs an experienced performer, but took a long break from performing live - to help him build up his stamina again. We quickly realized that working on singing as effortlessly as possible and reducing tongue tension will be key to building up his stamina again. This episode is the coaching session we had together so that you can see what all goes into building stamina and reducing effort.

Vocal struggles donât always show up in the high notes. For Michael, the hardest part of his voice wasnât the top or bottomâit was the middle.
In this episode, we sit down with VoxTape student Michael Graetzer and his coach Emily for a raw, honest look at what itâs like to work through a vocal sticking pointâspecifically the passaggio.
We talk about:
Why mid-range notes feel harder than they shouldHow to explore your voice instead of forcing itWhat to do when youâre scared the audience will ânoticeâ your weak spotHow to focus on your strengths without ignoring your challengesIf youâve ever felt like youâre the only one struggling with something that âshouldâ be easyâMichaelâs journey will remind you that progress is personal, and no oneâs voice is perfect.

Coach Emily and I talk about one of the most controversial topics out there: Is singing a natural talent, or can anyone learn to sing with the right training?
We also look at clips of professional artists doing vocal exercises to prove that even the best voices in the world still practice. Whether youâre just starting out or doubting your abilities, this episode is full of honest insight and encouragement to keep growingâno matter where youâre starting from.
