The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl Champions. Again. As this 2024 edition parties on, I figured it was a grand time to catch up with a legend from the 2017 team that had the entire city celebrating on Broad Street.
Of course, tight end Trey Burton was the man who threw the “Philly Special” touchdown to quarterback Nick Foles in Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots.
We explore this iconic moment in full detail — and everything that led up to it. A jack of all trades at Florida, Burton originally latched on as an undrafted free agent with the Birds. A few tough-love words from special teams coordinator Dave Fipp jumpstarted his career and he clawed his way to that title game in Minneapolis by Year 4. What was possibly going through his mind as the play call came in? How did it change his life? Burton has much to share. You better believe the Eagles were careful not to practice this play within range of Bill Belichick binoculars ahead of that game, too.
Burton inked a big deal with the Chicago Bears in the wake of his shining moment, before then playing for Frank Reich and Nick Sirianni in Indianapolis.
He’s got many Nick Foles and Sirianni tales to share.
The coach we see screaming on the sideline? That’s who Sirianni has been his entire life.

Good day! Hey, we’re long overdue to talk football with our resident personnel man, Jim Monos. Before Monos takes off to start his UFL season as general manager of the Memphis Showboats, Monos spends an hour-plus with Go Long.
He has many thoughts pertaining to one of his former teams: the Buffalo Bills.
To refresh, Monos worked as the director of personnel for the Bills (2013- ‘17). Before this, he was an area scout for the New Orleans Saints (2005- ‘13) and Philadelphia Eagles (2000- ‘04).
The Bills’ 2024 season was a success by many measures: Josh Allen won his first MVP award, Buffalo claimed its fifth straight division crown and they also reached the AFC Championship Game.
And yet — once again — this season ended with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
We’ve got several months to discuss. I’ll have a piece on Monday AM as well.

NEW ORLEANS — Somehow, the Kansas City Chiefs became villains. It’s not a role they asked for, but a role they’ve got no problem embracing.
All they’d like is a chance to stick a dagger into your chest late.
We know the Philadelphia Eagles roster is loaded with talent. As discussed earlier with PHLY’s Zach Berman, there really isn’t a weakness. Yet, not much seems to matter whenever Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, Steve Spagnuolo and Chris Jones are playing in a one-score game. This dynasty is much like the last dynasty in the NFL and, hey, the good news is Andy Reid most likely will not start dating a woman young enough to be his granddaughter. Unlike Bill Belichick, the mustached Chiefs head coach is a lovable fellow.

The man working the phones to move up in the 2017 NFL Draft for Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes wasn’t Andy Reid or Brett Veach.
Rather, John Dorsey.
From 2013- ‘17, Dorsey didn’t only serve as the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs — he built for the foundation for everything we still see today in 2025. Here on the “Ty & Bob Pod” at Go Long with co-host Bob McGinn, we examine the roots of the Chiefs’ epic run. The former Packers exec drafted stars we’ll see in Canton one day.
History has been kind to Dorsey, who’s now a senior personnel exec for the Detroit Lions.

This 2024- ‘25 ride for the Detroit Lions was really starting to feel like a fairy tale. Despite all of their injuries, Dan Campbell’s gang earned the No. 1 seed in the NFC postseason.
Then, the Washington Commanders shoved that Disney script into a paper shredder.
Jayden Daniels was tremendous. Jared Goff was not. And those injuries on defense were finally too much to overcome.
Here on the “Ty & Bob Pod,” our resident Hall of Famer, Bob McGinn, dives into the film. The meltdowns were numerous. Yet, there’s nothing Bob knows more than those 90s Packers that he covered on the beat. He sees striking similarities in these Lions. They’ll be back.
We also discuss Goff. He was exceptional all season, but how concerned should the Lions be about this turnover-filled finale?

The quarterback will likely win his third MVP, judging by the All-Pro voting.
The running back is up to 2,107 yards and 18 touchdowns on the season, all at the age of 31 years old.
But you heard it from A.J. Epenesa after the Buffalo Bills’ wild-card win over Denver. This Buffalo Bills defense that’s suffered its share of postseason duds will not put the Ravens up on a pedestal. They’re confident in their own progress since. Week 4. “We definitely respect them,” Epenesa told Go Long, “but there’s a way to beat everybody and that’s our mindset.”

Homefield advantage is on the line.
All season, we’ve been diving into the film on the “Ty & Bob Pod.” All season, the Packers, Lions and Vikings have exchanged body blows. Now, the tournament is closing in and you better know what you’re looking at in the mirror. Dan Campbell refused to heed Troy Aikman’s advice and played to win in Santa Clara. Detroit’s offense is humming along. The defense? That’s another story. Can Dan Campbell piece together a Super Bowl run? That No. 1 seed would certainly help.
At U.S. Bank Stadium, Kevin O’Connell’s team punked Matt LaFleur’s Packers.
The final score (27-25) was not indicative of the punishment. Big-game talk may be “bothersome” to LaFleur but it’s undeniably concerning that he hasn’t beaten the top teams. Green Bay wants to be a more physical outfit on offense, but it might be smart for LaFleur to unleash his $220 million dollar quarterback. This is a coach who tends to lose his cool on the sideline, too. We discuss how each of these teams are an extension of their coach.
Green Bay went 0-4 against Detroit and Minnesota this season and McGinn’s numbers behind this record are startling.
Is there time for the Packers to find themselves? Of course. There are a few answers out there on both sides of the ball.

Bruce Smith is hurting. He’s feeling the effects of those 299 total games played, those 214.5 total sacks (playoffs included). Many nights, he’s in so much pain that he barely grabs a wink of sleep.
So just imagine how all those quarterbacks feel.
Those 76 different quarterbacks he sacked.
The Buffalo Bills legend is truly one of the greatest football players to ever live. On this episode of “How the NFL Works” at Go Long, Smith explains exactly how he was able to dominate offenses. The Pro Football Hall of Famer was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team in both the 80s and 90s. Nobody sacked the quarterback more than him — not Reggie White, not Lawrence Taylor. There’s a very good chance his regular-season record of 200 lasts for a long, long time. For perspective, Myles Garrett still has 98 sacks to go.
And yet, Smith also knows his career could’ve crumbled if he didn’t look in the mirror and demand changes from himself. From brutal training sessions on a StairMaster to his diet to — above all — meticulous film study, Smith became a monstrous force vs. the pass and the run on the Bills team that reached four straight Super Bowls. And he did it while playing in a 3-4 defense.
Indeed, there’s an art to the destruction.
