Todayâs guest, Holly Cole, is an internationally renowned vocalist and multi-platinum recording artist whose sultry, smoky and sexy, perfect pitch voice somehow defies categorization.
She has a way of reshaping traditional genres, like jazz, pop and country, into her own unique signature style. Sheâs been dazzling music lovers for almost 4 decades, first in the Holly Cole Trio, and then as a solo artist. Sheâs released well over a dozen critically acclaimed albums, and some of my favorites are âBlame It on My Youthâ, âDonât Smoke in Bedâ, âTemptationâ, âDark Dear Heartâ, âIt Happened One Nightâ, âRomantically Helplessâ, âShadeâ, as well as her 2 fabulous live albums, âSteal the Night: Live at the Glenn Gould Studioâ, and most recently, âMontrealâ, which captured a very special reunion concert of the Holly Cole Trio recorded at the International Jazz Festival in Montreal.
And I have to mention her wonderful Christmas compilation album, âBaby itâs Cold Outside and I Have the Christmas Bluesâ, which should be a MUST in everyoneâs holiday music collection. And now, our guest has released her latest album, âDark Moonâ, in which she delivers her unique signature style and reshapes some of the most iconic standards from the New American Songbook writers including Marty Balin, Peggy Lee, Hal David, Burt Bacharach and Johnny Mercer.
Our guest has performed at some of the most prestigious music venues in the world, and she has starred in TV specials, most notably in 1993, in a show called âHolly Cole Trio: My Foolish Heartâ, which won numerous distinguished awards including 2 Gemini Awards. She has also won 2 Juno Awards, 2 Japanese Grand Prix Gold Disc Awards, AND the highly coveted Ella Fitzgerald Award, joining the ranks of Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Harry Connick Jr.. In fact, she and Diana Krall are the ONLY 2 Canadians to have EVER won this award.
And if all of that werenât enough, Iâm very proud to say that in 2014, our guest received an honorary doctorate from MY alma mater, Queenâs University.

Todayâs guest, Paul Petersen, is a beloved former child star, pop singer, teen idol, author, spokesman and child rights activist. We first fell in love with him as âJeff Stoneâ on âThe Donna Reed Showâ.
He also appeared in a number of major motion pictures including âThe Monolith Monstersâ, âHouseboatâ, âA Time for Killingâ, âThe Happiest Millionaireâ, âJourney to Shilohâ, âMommyâs Dayâ, âThe Portalâ and others. And on TV, heâs guest starred in many classic shows including âGeneral Hospitalâ, âThe Virginianâ, âMannixâ, âThe Flying Nunâ, âThe Big Valleyâ, âMy Three Sonsâ, âLassieâ, âMatt Houstonâ, âMike Hammerâ and many more.
Heâs also starred in numerous TV movies including âSomething For a Lonely Manâ, âIn the Year 2889â, âGidget Grows Upâ, âScoutâs Honorâ, and âHigh School USAâ. Our guest was also a successful recording artist in the 60âs, with a number of hit songs including "She Can't Find Her Keys", "Keep Your Love Locked", "Lollipops and Roses" and "My Dad".
In the mid-70s, our guest embarked on a writing career. His first book, entitled âHigh Performance Drivingâ, teaches drivers to be skillful, safe and efficient. He then published 8 action-adventure novels in a series called âThe Smugglerâ. And then in 1977 he released a memoir entitled, âWalt, Mickey and Me: Confessions of the First Ex-Mouseketeerâ, which is a fascinating and eye-opening account of his tumultuous 3 weeks, at the age of 9 years old, when he was a member of the Mickey Mouse Club TV show hosted by Walt Disney.
And then, in 1991, following the suicides of former child actors Tim Hovey, Trent Lehman and Rusty Hamer, our guest created a non-profit organization called âA Minor Considerationâ, which provides support and assistance to former child stars, and advocates for legislative protection for child celebrities in terms of working conditions and financial security. A Minor Consideration has had a tremendously positive and profound impact in the entertainment industry, and it has given our guest the well-deserved title of âthe patron saint of child actorsâ. And in fact, in 1997 our guest received the Former Child Star Lifetime Achievement Award at the Young Artist Awards.
