AD David Klingel drops by to talk baseball, softball, lacrosse domination, and why eight percent of the school is now running track. We relive the epic girls’ basketball title run (spoiler: five buses of screaming students helped), debate Duke’s chances in March Madness, and wonder if NIL has turned college sports into the Wild West. Oh—and yes, there’s a five-headed goat. Don’t ask, just listen.

In this episode of Hawk Talk, South River High School's girls basketball coach Mike Zivik shares the exhilarating story behind their state championship win, outlining a journey from a challenging 2-5 start to ultimate glory at the University of Maryland. The episode delves into the team's development over the season, highlighting the strategic coaching, mental resilience, and unwavering community support that fueled their success. Coach Zivik’s tactical use of the team’s depth to wear down opponents played a pivotal role, particularly in the championship game, where South River’s frequent rotation of players contrasted sharply with their opponent's reliance on a few key starters, setting the stage for a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback.
The championship's setting added an extraordinary dimension to the victory, as the team walked the same tunnels as Big Ten legends, buoyed by the vibrant support of five busloads of fans from their hometown and the local community cheering from The Turtle in Edgewater. Coach Zivik highlighted the psychological strength of the team, emphasizing their ability to stay positive and composed under pressure, which was crucial to their comeback and ultimate victory. This episode not only celebrates their tactical success but also paints a vivid picture of the emotional and community-driven aspects that contributed to their memorable championship run.
This episode also marks an exciting transition for Hawk Talk as host Tom Frank welcomes new co-hosts Grey Frank and Jaden McDuffie, who bring fresh energy and perspective to the show. Their enthusiastic participation in a March Madness draft competition adds a fun, interactive element that basketball fans will appreciate as they debate tournament predictions and strategies.
Whether you're a South River Seahawk supporter, a basketball enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates stories of perseverance and triumph, this championship celebration episode delivers authentic insights into what makes a winning team both on and off the court. Historic triumph for Seahawk Nation as South River High School basketball achieves an unprecedented milestone—both boys and girls teams capturing regional championships on the same night against the same opponent. The boys secured their first-ever regional title in program history with a commanding 57-45 victory at Stephen Decatur, while the girls dominated their way to a 68-22 win - their first regional championship since 2008.
The girls, playing on their home court, showcased suffocating defense that held Decatur to just two first-quarter points and nine total by halftime, demonstrating the program dominance that Coach Zivick discussed in his pre-game interview.
Both teams now advance to the state quarterfinals, with the girls playing at Oxon Hill on Friday, March 7th, and the boys hosting Milford Mill on Saturday, March 8th. Come be part of history—get your tickets on the GoFan app and pack the nest to support these remarkable student-athletes as they continue their championship quest!Hawk Talk is hosted by Tom Frank and brought to you by Chad's BBQ, Merrick Creative, and Maryland Remodeling Expert. In this episode of Hawk Talk, we start with a humble apology to Andrew Pita and Busayo Balogun, two rockstars we accidentally left out of last week's episode. To make it up to them, we’re kicking off today’s show with their interview.
We then jump into the latest playoff scores and upcoming games, including a big-time showdown on the soccer field this Wednesday night that’s sure to keep us all on our toes.
To share more on our girls' soccer team, we sit down with four of our girls’ soccer team seniors—Adrianna Bodycomb, Greta Brooks, Addie Frazier, and Kat Budowski. They dish on the rollercoaster of emotions from senior night, their favorite highlights of the season, and share a few words of wisdom for next year’s team.
Finally, we bring it home with Coach Steve Schlossberg, who gives us a glimpse into the world of South River Golf. He’s got stories, insights, and some pro tips on surviving the fairway—plus a few laughs along the way.
It’s all here: playoffs, apologies, and a whole lot of Hawk pride. Tune in, and let’s go Hawks!
