âSometimes, âgood enoughâ is good enough. You donât have to be extreme. In fact, extreme is so confining. Those things that are the most rigid are most susceptible to complete collapse. Building in flexibility can sometimes make things sustainable over time.â
New Healthy Love and Money team member Dr. Christine Hargrove joins our host Ed Coambs to share her unique approach to financial therapy through the lens of neurodiversity.
Walking us through her unique journey from religious studies to becoming a pioneer in financial therapy, Dr. Hargrove walks us through her experiences working with individuals and families affected by ADHD.
Achieving breakthroughs in peopleâs financial lives requires an understanding of diverse money mindsets and a willingness to get personal, in order to navigate financial stress more effectively. She contrasts the often rigid advice of mainstream financial influencers with the adaptable strategies of empathy-focused financial therapists like herself.
Christine and Ed also get into the emotional impact of financial trauma, using her personal experiences from the 2008 financial crash to illustrate how economic events can shape your personal identity and family dynamics, for better or worse. Recognizing and bridging the gap between financial intentions and behaviors between your relationships, she says, promotes not only understanding, but also positive reinforcement within yourself.
Finally, Dr. Hargrove speaks on the concept of proactive relationship wellness. She encourages couples to seek guidance early to manage financial stress more effectively, which of course allows themâand even their kidsâto enjoy healthier, more fulfilling relationships with money.

âFinancial trauma is not something that you can take a magic pill for; but, you can certainly become trauma-informed.â
In what ways can childhood experiences predict your financial future? Join our host Ed Coambs as he uncovers the hidden layers of financial trauma with Rahkim Sabree, a pioneering expert in financial therapy!
Rahkim does a deep dive into how early observations of our parents' financial habits profoundly influence our money mindset as adults. Ed and Rahkim navigate the convoluted web of cultural pressures and a culture of consumerism that shape our financial self-worth, and discuss how the mistrust of financial tools, like credit or life insurance, can echo throughout our lives.
Financial trauma, according to Rahkim, is âany instance observed or experienced that has a negative impact on the way you view, interact with, or believe about, money.â
Have you ever felt judged for your financial choices or struggled with the societal expectations tied to your bank account? Rakhim encourages us to become hyper-aware of the different communities in our lifeâwhether religious, familial, or professionalâand really see how each shapes our relationship with money.
They also compare the often misleading promises of financial influencers to those of the diet industry, as well as the relationship between financial trauma and generational trauma. Rahkim reminds us that we need a trauma-informed approach to financial healing. He and Ed discuss how bringing the âlanguageâ of therapy down the Earth can demystify trauma and help people recognize and overcome deeply ingrained fears, such as the fear of debt.
Ultimately, by aligning personal values with financial goals, Rahkim encourages us to move beyond black-and-white thinking and embrace a nuanced understanding of financial decision-making so we can experience true healing and take back the reins of our financial destiny!

Our host, Ed Coambs sits down with fellow Financial Therapist Jillian Knight of Her Financial Therapy to talk about her eye-opening journey to financial freedom. The challenges she faced on her road to being debt-free offer a ton of insights into the power of open communication between spouses and the dark truth about mainstream money management programs.
"Navigating student loans without a financial roadmap was daunting, but it ultimately led me to discover the transformative power of combining therapy with financial guidance."
As with many people, Jillian's financial awakening began when she realized the gravity of her student loan burden and her lack of financial education after getting married. With nowhere to go but up, she talks about how she fought through the sense of isolation and overwhelm she felt while paying down her debt, with the guidance of financial expert Dave Ramsey.
"Rigid financial systems can impose moral judgments and hierarchies that hinder personal growth; recognizing these barriers is essential for fostering a healthier relationship with money."
Over time, she and her husband became disillusioned with Ramsey and the shame-based culture prevalent in many similar overly rigid financial programs.
"Evolving social dynamics, like the pandemic and movements for racial justice, have reshaped my approach to money management, underscoring the need to balance financial goals with self-care and emotional health."
But it was really when significant recent events, particularly the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement, that led Jillian and her husband to break away entirely from Dave Ramsey and chart their own road to being debt-freeâa road that values tolerance and flexibility above all else.
She hopes that her unique path to redefining financial therapy inspires others to walk their own journey with intention and empathy!

"We think we need more money to be happy, but in reality, we just need those people to talk with and count on and feel connected with."
Did you know that money-related arguments between married couples are the most predictive of divorce compared to any other type of conflict?
Our host Ed Coambs sits down with financial therapist Dr. Sonya Lutter to unpack this uncomfortable truth and how couples can take steps to masterfully navigate financial challenges of all kinds. Sonya draws from over two decades of research and marriage counseling. When sheâs not speaking onstage or working with clients, sheâs teaching at Texas Tech University as the Director of the Financial Health and Wellness program.
"If I'm more stressed, the people around me become more stressed. Our brains are wired to pick up on each other's emotional states."
Ed and Sonya kick things off talking about the power of open communication regarding money and role expectations as early as possible in a relationship. Sonya shares how unspoken assumptions and unmet expectations can silently brew conflict, even without overt arguments. She explains why itâs so important not just to have regular conversations with your spouse, but also to seek professional support on your financial wellness journey.
"While we might believe we're in complete control of ourselves, much of our behavior is instinctive and triggered by external stimuli."
They also explore the connection between financial anxiety and family dynamics. Sonya discusses how the fight-or-flight response influences our interactions and responsibilities as adults and parents. Finally, she and Ed touch on the magic of co-regulation (versus codependency), through which partners can support each other in managing stress.

âIf we allow ourselves that place of full expression, I have it that more goodness happens in the world because people are not bound, and we actually continue that interdependence long term.â
Imagine a mother on the cusp of gifting money to her daughter, grappling with the emotional and financial strings that come attached. Thatâs just one example in our host Ed Coambsâ conversation with Liz Hand from Pleasant Wealth. Together, they navigate the murky waters of financial decision-making and the profound concept of financial intimacy. They challenge the notion of right or wrong in financial choices, urging listeners to embrace a mindset that fosters personal freedom.
Relationships and money have always been a tangled web, and Ed and Liz pull back the layers using vivid (and possibly hunger-inducing) metaphors like a seven-layer cake and a burger-burrito analogy. They discuss the intricate dynamics between aging parents and their adult children, diving into the emotional ties that bind financial responsibilities.
Financial planning amidst uncertainty is akin to setting off on a voyage of self-discovery. Ed and Liz explore stories of diligent savers who, despite reaching financial independence, hesitate to embrace the fruits of their labor. Influenced by what Liz calls the "Midwestern money mindset," these tales resonate far beyond regional borders, speaking to a universal struggle with financial security. In wrapping up, Ed extends an invitation to reflect on these insights, encouraging listeners to journal and share their experiences, creating a community where healthy love and financial well-being are cultivated together.

âWe try to fix the financial vehicle without fixing the driver. So that's why, to me, mindset, behavior is so important. Until we change as individuals, giving ourselves a faster portfolio is not going to work, so we as investors have to become better investors, and then worry about finding better investments.â
Our host Ed Coambs welcomes Chad Hufford of Veritas Alaska to the Healthy Love and Money Podcast. Ed and Chad shed light on why you must become a savvy investor before chasing the next big opportunity. They underscore that financial success stems from disciplined habits and effective coaching.
Reflecting on Chad's homeschooling experience in the eighties, they illustrate the critical balance between education and execution. You'll discover why having a robust financial blueprint is essential for connecting your current actions with future goals, steering clear of the pitfalls of hasty decisions and overambitious plans.
Tackling the often-overlooked issue of financial stress and shame, Chad's insights normalize open money conversations.
