In ep 105 of âHow Do You Say That?!â sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Danny Watts joins Sam and Mark to talk about dialling up and down the brightness for a corporate script, getting historical clues from within the script, and why getting together for drinks can enhance your voiceover career!
Our VO question this week is all about the voiceover socials - what they are, where they are and why they are!
Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to [email protected]
Script 1
To modulate their brightness, LEDs are typically pulsed on and off at regular intervals. This approach is called pulse width modulation, or PWM for short. When an LED is asked to operate at a much lower brightness, it ends up being off more than it is on, effectively limiting the amount of brightness levels it can create, thus reducing the effective bit depth of the video being displayed. The result is noticeable banding and visual artefacts on the images being shown on screen. To alleviate these issues, we have introduced Dark Magic on all our Tessera LED processors.
Script 2
A fine morning sir and isnât that the most precious collar Iâve ever seen on a Barker. I wondered what would it take for you to part with such a handsome coat? I know the value of such a garment - I have a keen eye and a heavy pocket - and I deal in the finest accessories sir. Why, just the other day I sold the smartest hat to a lovely young lad. You wouldnât be in the market to sell, would you?

About our guest:
Danny Watts has been a voice actor since 2012, in all genres from commercials to film, video game to IVR. He claims he was too shy at college to do drama, but opted for music instead... became a singer, and loved the limelight when standing behind a mic.
In his spare time, Danny writes, performs, produces and distributes his own music under the pseudonym âDowntown Patriotsâ a fictitious band consisting of one member - him!
In 2019 just before lockdown, he somehow managed to volunteer himself to organise a London VO social event, and has been doing that ever since.

In episode 104 of âHow Do You Say That?!â sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Liam Gerrard joins Sam and Mark to talk about the rigours of creating audiobooks, from characterisation and mind-boggling names to coping with your own company for hours on end and actually knuckling down to the hard work of reading! The show has some Elvish language that scares us from the off, and a magical revelation too!
Our VO question this week is all about why audiobooks can be the most rewarding of all voiceover genres.

âGood afternoon, dachâothala,â I said. I saw Zanarin wince pointedly at my voice, which was harsh and graveled thanks to my surviving the sessiva when it swept through Lohaiso during my prelacy there. It mostly did not bother me, except when someone like Zanarin made sure it did.

"This is not entertainment," Rebekah Vardy's barrister, Hugh Tomlinson QC, declared at the opening of the trial referred to at the Royal Courts of Justice as Vardy vs Rooney, but known everywhere else as the Wagatha Christie trial.
To borrow a favourite linguistic flourish of Vardy's: not being funny, but what are you on, my learned friend? For seven days, I sat in the front row of the multimillion-pound libel trial and, to be honest with you - another favourite phrase of Vardy's, (a phrase which led Coleen Rooney's barrister, David Sherborne QC to retort, "Well, I'd much rather you're honest because you are sitting in a witness box") - in all my many years of covering fashion and celebrities in this paper, this was the purest form of entertainment I have ever seen.

Happy New Year! In the second of our festive specials of âHow Do You Say That?!â we've delved into the archive - and pulled out an episode full of gold with voice actor and casting director Emily Jardine.
As with our Christmas special, this is UNEDITED, warts-and-all! Don't miss Charlie the puppy turning bad, what happened when Sam had a power-cut mid recording and a very squishy sounding Igor - well it was first broadcast around Halloween 2023!
It's about 20 minutes longer than the usual podcast, but there are some real gems in there, and all the bits you don't usually hear before we start recording, after we finish, and when we mess up too!

Script 1
A killer can come in many forms.
From the Visionaries, to the Mission Oriented.
Hedonists, To the desire for power and control.
A trait is often shared between these abhorrent individuals. A trait which strikes fear into our hearts.
Their innate ability to blend amongst humanity.
From a single glance, you may think nothing of them. You might even trust them.
Until it is far too late.
Script 2
Dear Henry
I'm Charlie, a Corgi puppy who is quite new to the whole dry food feeding thing. I only like to eat the best of the best and I'm worried that my parents aren't feeding me the right food. Call me high maintenance, but I want a food that ticks all the boxes: tasty, keeps my coat lovely and shiny, my 'parcels' firm, and helps me develop as I grow into a bigger dog. Does such a food exist or are my expectations simply too high?
Best wishes,
Charlie x

Creativity is an aching need for self-expression and a longing for meaning. Thatâs why the best creatives I know pull from their sense of childlike wonder, which means, breaking free of mediocrity and taking a deep dive into who you were, who you are, and who you hope to be.
So it asks...no, demands...that you let go of your artificial boundaries and rediscover all your wonderful weirdnessâthe experiences that make you different from everyone else on the planet.
And when does life ask that of you? Or, when was the last time you could do that without feeling judged? Thatâs why creativity is such a rush. Itâs the undeniable truth of who you are being recognised and embraced.
Script 2

Script 1
So what makes a Good Life? To have done something important do you need to be named? To have made a difference do you have to have an image which is instantly recognised? Do you need a million Tweets and a billion followers? An Oscar winning bio-pic? Is the business of a life lived to the full only worth knowing if you yourself are known? A tree falling in the empty forest is not unheard. If nothing else itâs noticed by the other trees. So I fall. Back into the silence of history.
Script 2
Itâs wearing your heart on your sleeve
but keeping your cool.
The noise, the chants
Points won, points lost.
To win the cup or just stay up
We go again, we march on.
Win games and youâll be fine.
Football, bloody hell
Its turning up and never giving up
Meeting triumph and disaster
Dust yourself down, pick yourself up
And face the arena.
To coach
To lead
To deliver
To succeed
You just do it.

Script 1
This trunk had two neat brass locks, one left, one right, along the front of the lid. Ethel, after fumbling, opened the first â then, so great was her hurry to know what might be within that she could not wait but slipped her hand in under the lifted corner. She pulled out one pricelessly lacy top of what must be a bridal-veil, and gave a quick laugh â must not this be an omen? She pulled again, but the stuff resisted, almost as though it were being grasped from inside the trunk.
Script 2
A long, long time ago, organic remains were safely stored deep within our planet;
Where it turned into carbon compound.
Let's fast forward to the industrial revolution, when we first discovered that we could use this carbon to fuel our societies.
But there's a catch.
Every carbon particle we burn, turns into a CO2 molecule, that is filling up the atmosphere.
Which is bad news for our planet â and for us.

Let's start by accepting and highlighting three basic, concrete, and absolutely undeniable premises:
1. Everyone, without exception, has felt fear at some point in the past.

Canât you just admit you're not ready to make your own choices? look at yourselves! You ended up on the side of the highway in a camping tent thatâs missing a pole, you pretty much stole our car, and neither of you have a licence when I last checked, and you had sex - the one rule we had while living under our roof you were not allowed, the one rule. You broke it. This is not good decision making.

About our guest:
Simon Wells is a London based voiceover, specialising in corporate work and e-learning, with the occasional character voice thrown in for fun. He had an unusual journey into voiceover, having left his previous job as a postie, after a back injury. His dream is to get into animation and gaming, as character voices are what he loves most.
He's a podcaster too, and runs FACTORALY, in which he and fellow VO Bruce Fielding chat about fun facts and useless information around a different subject each week. Simon loves exploring London, seeing live music and doing improv.
