Kristine Dizon is the CEO, Founder, and Director of the Music and Language Learning Center. She is an international artist and teacher who has performed in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Kristine has been a part of several socio-cultural and educational projects that include the Philharmonie de Paris-Project DEMOS, Conservatoire de Montargis (Orchestre á l'école), and the Minnesota Project Opera. Kristine has been an Outschool teacher for so long that she actually interviewed with one of the original founders! In this episode, she gives you strategic advice on how to stop working 14-hour days and how to scale your business all while building relationships with parents and students. One of the key takeaways is that you don't have to do everything on your own but you do have to treat this way of teaching as a business. Success is a gradual process, and by analyzing data, building funnels, working with an account manager and VA, and being flexible while you find your niche through trial and error, you can build yourself a profitable business as well. Don't miss all the great tips she drops in this episode!

Rebecca Kiziltas, a London-based French teacher, pivoted her career from working in the private sector to becoming an educator in her 30’s and soon realized that being a teacher in a brick and mortar setting simply wasn’t for her. She switched to teaching online and has found her groove. She has been able to enjoy the luxury of setting her own teaching hours along with teaching what she enjoys. But teaching isn’t the only part of this job. In order to be successful, you really do have to treat this like a business.
Rebecca has started looking at her position as the CEO of her teaching business and is really enjoying being able to use different strategies to make her business thrive.
Something even more exciting is that since we recorded this episode, she took the leap and started her own organization. Congratulations on your growth Rebecca!

I had a fantastic time getting to know Kristen Mercurio, a fellow Outschool teacher who is a certified teacher, life coach, and business owner. She left the brick-and-mortar classroom and exclusively works online focusing on teaching international learners. She sets her own schedule to specifically meet the needs of learners in many different time zones and has built a teaching business that is thriving as she serves the needs of students across the world. She has big energy and is so enthusiastic about what she does.
Not only does she help children learn but she is also a moderator of the Outschool International Time Zones Parents and Teachers Group (unofficial), helping match parents with teachers who cater to learners outside of the standard North American time zones. You can find Kristen working as a private tutor on her own and creating curriculum via her personal business Promising Futures and contracting with Teacup Wellness as a life coach.

I will be the first to admit that when I first started working from home that meant it permeated all aspects of my life. I didn’t have a designated space set up right away, it was way too easy to constantly have the laptop open anywhere I was sitting and I was “multitasking” at all hours. Did that mean that I got more accomplished? Heck, no! Did I make more money? Nope. Was I organized? I thought I was. News flash: I was a train wreck.
It took a while to establish a schedule that separated work from family time, with set boundaries, systems and procedures in place, and the feeling of true accomplishment on a regular basis.
A major perk to working for yourself is setting a schedule that you love but in doing so there is absolutely no way to please everyone without reaching a state of burnout. Take a look at what you are doing and see if you need to make any adjustments so that you can reclaim a separation of “work” and “home”.

Well, hello! I’m coming at you as the art teacher for a bit because self-promotion is a combination of business and art. As uncomfortable as it can be sometimes, you need to be able to stand out, to be noticed - consistently. You want to teach full classes, right?
Let’s get into some ways that will help make it easier to streamline the process by choosing your colors, fonts, and formats and sticking with them so that you are easily recognized. I’m talking templates, photos, videos, and more.
Want another free quick win for helping to promote yourself that works? Download the workbook and put yourself on the mailing list. I promise I won’t spam you with emails and you can unsubscribe at any time but I have a series of helpful tips coming up.

In any field, there is terminology that you must become familiar with. Because I entered the virtual teaching world as a teacher and did not think like a business person right away it was a bit overwhelming to have to learn so many things at once. I figured if I had 20ish years of experience as a teacher and I held a Master’s degree in Instructional Technology I would have the skills to make this work.
I did have the skills to teach and use the technology that works for this online world but I quickly realized that there were a lot of business strategies that I needed to learn and start applying to how I structured my courses in order to gain and retain a following of students.
Now that you have all of those ideas worked out for course development, let’s put them into a funnel to attract more learners and keep them coming back!

I’m passionate about the topic of creativity, in many different aspects of life, not just because I’m an art teacher. I truly believe that we can be creative and unique when it comes to what kind of courses we put out into the world.
Who needs prewritten curriculum, right? Granted, it is easier to have someone else do that work for us, but I can honestly say I’ve never found a single curriculum out there that completely aligned with what I wanted to teach.
That’s the beauty of being a virtual teacher, we get to teach what we WANT to teach.
If you put a little time and extra thought into it, I know you have some really creative ideas swirling around that will make your classes stand out, be unique, maybe even a little quirky. Your people will find you if you put it out there.

If you are a teacher then you know about back-to-school nightmares all too well. Well, when you are starting something completely new and you don't really know what you are getting yourself into, a new set of dreams start to wake you up at night. Oh, wait, I wasn't sleeping! Let me tell you all about the very first class I ever taught on a new platform, in a new way, to new kids and how the very thing I feared the most actually happened.
The thing is, when you live your nightmares or you make it through those struggles it makes you a better teacher and you know you can handle the small stuff.
I'm here to tell you that even if you haven't lived through your worst fear you can at least prepare for the things that have been worrying you. Putting a plan in place will ease that anxiety and let you move on to build a stronger business.
