Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog bezoekt Marten Toonder een schilder, Eterman, die hem met goud helpt. Toonder vermoedt dat Eterman schilderijen vervalst. Jaren later is er weinig bekend over Eterman. Was hij een meestervervalser die nooit gepakt werd?

Johan Diekman (1889-1955), bekend als Eterman, was een mysterieuze schilder met een paranormale gave en contacten in de kunstwereld, waaronder vervalser Han van Meegeren.
