As leader, you must have a high level of influence in order to effectively lead the people you are in charge of leading. You must first understand that your interactions and coaching need to be felt long after you’re gone. Your influence on this earth must have a sweet and lasting aroma for decades to come.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. There are three kinds of empathy: cognitive, emotional and compassionate. As a leader you must make a conscious effort to not be too much of one thing.

We are all given the same 24 hours in a day. We must learn to value time, prioritize and not allow ourselves to just go through the motions each day. Time is something we cannot buy back, once the day is gone, we cannot buy it back. Create a to do list to help with the proper time management.

In order to become a good listener, you must stop listening to respond but instead listen to understand. You must know the difference between listening vs hearing. These three areas help paint a better picture for what active listening should be; Practical, Social, Personal Development. Four factors that cause us not to listen: self-absorption, ‘know it all’ attitude, distractions, and overestimating our listening skills.

What does it mean to be generous? It is showing a readiness to give more of something, as money or time, than is strictly necessary or expected. Are you a leader that’s willing to give more than you receive? Generosity is not solely based on finances, you can be generous with your time and knowledge. Your generosity level cannot be low or mediocre when leading a team. There’s only one level when it comes to our level of generosity; high.

Nurturing behaviors are: being fully present in your interactions with children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly (verbally and non-verbally), validating their feelings, providing physical affection and comfort when sought, laughing and playing games, don’t take yourself too serious, providing safe mental, physical and social challenges that promote healthy growth.

Insecurity is a feeling of general unease or nervousness that may be triggered by perceiving of oneself to be vulnerable or inferior in some way, or a sense of vulnerability or instability which threatens one's self-image or ego. This area must get checked before ruining you and your team. Once you overcome this area of your life you will become an even better leader.

As leader you must learn to gain control of your emotions and not overreact to situations nor handle them the same way as past situations. You must learn to suppress your urge having to always respond and react right away. Left over spaghetti always taste better the next day. Sometime it’s better for you to give yourself a day or a moment to really process what you’re seeing or experiencing. When you overreact, you lose control of the situation, your mind is now clogged up with negativity verses staying neutral.

In order for your team to perform at an optimal level, it’s extremely important to minimize the amount of time they spend dissecting the agenda. As a leader, you must understand that if it’s complicated to you, it’s likely complicated for your team as well. Take the time to make the complex things simpler, so time can be focused on executing!
