Episode 53 https://callyrae.com/
Today I want to introduce you to what my husband calls God's pharmacy and teach you how to recognize food as medicine and to think of food a little bit differently. Think of medicine a little bit differently. And as a result, empower you to be the expert in your body. We'll start with thinking about food differently. In the SAD culture, Standard American Diet and Lifestyle, we definitely think about food as calories in, calories out. That is deeply ingrained in our culture. That is not how we view food in WOW, in using food as medicine, using food as fuel. We're looking deeper. We're looking more broadly. Now we're going to flip the script on medicine. And instead of thinking of medicine as this quick fix. Masking.
This is the most delicious medicine you are ever going to experience. I guarantee it.That's a side effect of food as medicine is that you start to understand and realize how delicious whole food and healing food can be. It is not only nourishing, but it is delicious as well.
The last step of using food as medicine is the prescription part. Now you have your data. You know what your superfoods and what your personal poisons are. Now you figure out your personal script. Ratio. Frequency. Duration.
The bottom line is that food addresses the root cause. And when we address the root cause of our symptoms, then we're healing. And when we're healing, we're thriving. Understand that food is medicine. And if we use it that way, we understand how to put it into our bodies, analyze how it is affecting our bodies, and then come up with our personal script of what works best. You will be living WOW, you will be thriving and understanding that root cause and healing. That to me is what it's all about.

Episode 52
So what does it look like to be intentional? Itās simple but itās not easy. Simple because anyone can do it but not easy because most wonāt.
The good news is that intention is found at the beginning of any change because you canāt change something youāre not aware of. So, if you are at the beginning of your transformation from surviving to thriving and WOWvs SAD is new to you this is still relevant.
This episode will discuss the aspects of SAD to be able to recognize it and get out of the current drifting away to surviving.
Next, you will explore the hidden WOW of intention and complete a brief assessment of your 8 systems of the Living WOW framework to become the expert in your body. This will help you identify the 3 areas of greatest need and help you put your feet down and begin to move out of the SAD current and intentionally move into WOW.
Finally, you'll learn how to maintain the thriving in Living WOW as the waves of life crash over you as they undoubtedly will. Just like a butterfly would never go back into a cocoon to become a caterpillar, why in the world would going back to surviving be an option? It's not.
There is a flow that is undeniable when you are thriving Living WOW. It is energizing and joyful. It is easy to love and serve, move and celebrate, learn and grow. When you experience thriving you canāt go back toliving SAD.

When I was going through my first transformation that I wrote about in 8 Lessons Lupus Taught Me: From Surviving to Thriving with Autoimmune Diseases the big revolutionary findings were focused on epigeneticsand the fact that we could turn on or off our genetic predispositions with lifestyle choices.
Now I am struck by the revolutionary findings of today which are focused on the microbiome and the emerging evidence that our lifestyle choices can support or sabotage our health based on the health of our ābugsā in, on, and around us.
What is the natural response for most of us when it comes to bugs? Kill em, kill em all! Pests! Disease! Unfortunately, we have not understood the role of the bugs and as a result have inadvertently created much bigger problems. The degree of damage is still being determined as the microbiome is being studied andrevealed.
The most basic understanding that is widely accepted now is that we are host to trillions of biota that live in, on, and around us. Microscopic organisms that have various roles in our survival. Probably themost recognized are the microbiome of the digestive tract. Lesser recognized, but I would argue also extremely important are the microbiome of the skin.
The question is not as much where they are (just assume they are everywhere) but rather what is their role and how can we cohabitate for thriving together?
Year after year, study after study, the complexity of the microbiome is beginning to be understood. Now it is common to replenish and support the biome with prebiotic and probiotic foods and supplements if you doneed to take antibiotics. Doctors do not prescribe antibiotics as quickly and broadly as they once did thanks to the superbugs that began to create a firestorm of terror in the medical community (especially hospitals and nursing facilities).
Some of the latest studies are linking our gut health (aka gut biome) to immune function and brain function. Interesting when you look at the amount of bug killing compounds in our foods and environment. Could it becausing the rise in autoimmune diseases and mental health conditions of all kinds in all ages?
We are making huge strides in understanding the biomes of the body, what some eat, how their waste is necessary to support our organs, how each one is individual and unique like a fingerprint. Western medicine is coming along in some ways but old habits die hard.
Just like epigenetics turned our understanding of DNA on its head, I see the microbiome turning our understanding of our bodies systems and physiology on its head. There is still so much to learn and understand but I believe that the statement that Living WOW is founded on rings more true thanever.
Our bodies are indeed designed to heal if we give them the environment to do so. Trusting and listening to your individual body so that you can become the expert in YOUR body is key while the scientists figure out the universal details for EVERYbody

Introduction to Breath Work
Breath work is one of my all-time favorite lifestyle hacks. I think itās underrated by most people. Because we breathe all the time, we just take it for granted and you donāt realize the power that is in your breath.
There are a few reasons for that and today, I want to talk about intentional breathing.
Living WOW is an intentional lifestyle choice rather than SAD which is autopilot. Everybodyās doing it. Itās the way we were raised, our beliefs and all those kinds of things. So SAD is over here in this survivingbucket of autopilot and Living WOW is over here in this intentional thriving bucket.
Based on the choices we make and the little tweaks we do to our choices every day, little tiny steps add up to this intentional Living WOW. Then, the benefit of it is that we end up thriving because we get to the bottom of our dis-ease. We get to eliminate those triggers and recognize the things in our environment and in our lifestyle that either support a healthy lifestyle and thriving or sabotage it.
Iām a speech language pathologist by profession so Iāve always taught breath for the purposes of voice therapy and also for fluency. That kind of breathing you are probably the most familiar with is called diaphragmatic breathing or belly breathing. Itās when weāre breathing way down deep into our diaphragm.
So, we have diaphragmatic breathing, thoracic breathing, and clavicular breathing, but in the last 10 years Iāve changed my perspective of breath from this autonomic function that we have that keeps us alive to a more internalized, more spiritual aspect of our breath and how it supports our health. How it can create an environment for healing.
Itās interesting to think about breath. Without it youāre dead. It is your life and it is your life source. In Chinese medicine and healing arts they refer to qi as your life source and it is related very closely to your breath. You can move your qi as you move your breath.
I just explained to you how I understood and used breath in my practice and for healing. But it falls short!
The Significance of Breath
I donāt view my breath the same way I used to. I view it as my spirit so I can listen and hear. I can adjust whatās happening in my body as I work with my spirit. Itās become much more of an internal regulatorand tool.
Today, Iām going to give you some strategies and perspectives that might change the way you use your breath to change your healing environment.
Breathwork is one of the most powerful ways to counteract stress. I have found that any type of stress response, be it positive or negative, can often be a catalyst for a flare. Itās the one thing that I still experience. Something will happen and it will catch me off guard and I will end up with a flare three days later.
What I have learned now is to be able to turn on my parasympathetic nervous system. Your sympathetic is your fight or flight and your parasympathetic is the system that calms. Your sympathetic system and yourparasympathetic system are opposite so you cannot be in fight or flight if youāve activated your parasympathetic system.
Activating the Parasympathetic Nervous System
Guess what the number one way to activate the parasympathetic is? Just breathe.
Because your body physiologically sends a message to your brain that says āeverythingās okā. All of the chemicals are dumping and creating all sorts of chaos inside, whether you have an outward stress responseor not.
Iām going to teach you some strategies. Any of these strategies will interrupt that fight or flight. It automatically sends a signal to your brain that says, āWeāre good. You can shut offā. Itās the number oneway to stop stress in its tracks.
Breathwork for Health and Healing
I think itās important to point out that a lot of times when weāre trying some sort of healing modality, weāre thinking that weāre not doing it right. With breathwork, youāre not going to do it wrong. Thereās no wrongway to breathe!

Living WOW and Honoring the Seasons
Today in the northern hemisphere it is the first day ofsummer and season change is something that is foundational in living WOW. Living WOW is a lifestyle of intention and choice and part of that is honoringthe seasons.
I was first introduced to season change back when I wasdoing Ama Bodywork and Chinese Medicine. She introduced me to a book called Staying Healthy with the Seasons by Elson M Haas MD. Each season change I pullout the book and flip to the chapter about the season thatās coming up.
Even though, at this point, I have a seasonal rhythm and Iām in tune to the change thatās happening, I love to go back and look at what are the elements associated with this season? How does this season manifest in theorgan function? I find it fascinating and Iām not yet a master of that so I still like to go back and review and learn more.
The Importance of Recognizing and Respecting Season Change
We have listeners all over the world and those in the southern hemisphere are going into winter so Iāll address all of the seasons as I introduce why honoring the seasons is foundational to Living WOW.
First, I want to point out to you why it matters. In ourculture of SAD, the Standard American Diet and Lifestyle, we have forgotten about season change. Depending on where you live, if you live in a more temperate climate, you may not have a true four seasons with your climate so it looks different.
Regardless of the temperatures, and they certainly do affect our activity, in our SAD lifeā¦it doesnāt. We just turn on the air conditioner in the summer and turn on the furnace in the winter. We donāt recognize, we donātacknowledge and respect the season changes the way our ancestors did. The way historically our bodies are created to do.
I found this pattern early on in my transformation. This was key when I realized, every single fall between September and October I would get bronchitis and then it would linger on through the entire year. I would then have a deep bronchial cough that I couldnāt shake.
I started to recognize that my body needs somethingdifferent in the fall, in the winter, in the spring, and in the summer. Our rhythm is different. The foods we eat are different. The days are longer or shorter. Ignoring that and just working day in and day out and not even givinga nod to the fact that weāve changed seasons is part of why I had the kind of breakdown I would have.
Iām a spring birthday. I think thereās a real reason that Ifeel like Iām dying in the winter and then in the spring I feel like Iām waking up and coming alive. Summer is full throttle and I like to run at full throttle. Summer is my time and then I forget to put the brakes on in the fall and change my rhythm. So, I crash.
My body would shut itself down historically because I didnāt catch the messages. I wasnāt listening to nature. I wasnāt following the cues.
Now itās become a critical part of thriving with autoimmune diseases. Itās relevant whether you have autoimmune diseases or not!
My autoimmune diseases are what cracked the case for me and helped me to understand the importance of the seasons, but itās relevant to everyone.
I donāt care who you are, seasons matter. If you can learn to embrace them and celebrate them, instead of ignore or bemoan them it matters.
Regardless of where you are, I hope that you come away from this episode today with A: an awareness, B: an appreciation, and C: maybe some action plans of ways that you can optimize this season change.
Itās either the 20th, 21st, or 22nd and as I get closer to it, I look it up and start planning. I usually start about a week ahead of the season change in preparation and getting ready. Then the week of season change I usually will have some sort of cleanse.
This season change I did a 24 hour fast, then a three-dayjuice cleanse, to get things lighter and ready for more fresh and lighter foods. Then Iāll go into my Supercharge, which I usually do the 1st to the 10th of the month, but at season change I scooch it back and do it around the season change.
With Supercharge I cut out dairy, gluten, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. Itās just really clean light foods so that my body can get ready and be optimal thriving in the summer season. Itās not too much of a change from my normal routine, but itās enough to give a nod to the fact that we go from warmer transition foods like casseroles and soups to lighter, fresher, cooler foods which for me tends to be lots of smoothies, salads with fresh fruits and vegetables being the majority of my diet.
If you are in the southern hemisphere, youāre doing theopposite going into root vegetables, warmer foods, more meat, more dairy, more grains, because youāre warming your body.
I tend to have a much more dramatic season change between summer and fall and winter and spring because we are going from lots of energy and huge growth to taking it in and slowing down. I tend to do a more extremecleanse like a 3 or 5 day fast and then go into a more dramatic elimination diet or inventory checking in to see where my sensitivities and tolerances are. Then I can go to work on my microbiome of fixing and repairing so that my body is assimilating and managing it properly and not thinking that the food is actually poison and triggering a flare.
Iāve talked about this a lot in season one and it doesnātmatter what season it is, processed food is poison. Whole foods are good for you and you can build up a tolerance and an ability to eat them when your body is healed.
Season change is a good time to do some of those inventories. If you have a functional medicine doctor, a nutritionist, or someone who can help you with that to dial it in for your body, thatās really helpful. Rememberthat you are the expert in your body!
If there is nothing else you come aways from this podcastknowing, I hope that youāre empowered to be the expert in your body and know what you can do on your own and when to seek professional help and know that youāre an active partner in your health.
Itās rooted in the seasons, so thatās why weāre startingwith the seasons today. I hope youāre getting the idea of why it matters. The days change, the length of light changes, the elements, how it impacts our body changes. In nature, the growth and the rest. We miss that in the constant state of SAD where we arenāt changing and flowing with the seasons.
If weāre not flowing, then weāre getting stagnant and weāregetting blocks and weāre getting dis-ease. Before we know it, weāre suffering and weāre surviving and weāre in pain and weāre blaming it on aging.
Season Change Assessment
I want to wrap up with an assessment. It is not only seasonchange but itās also mid-year and the end of second quarter. Itās a time to check in and see where weāre at. Am I on track with my goals or have I drifted? Do I need to retool? Do I need to reset? Remember, Iām going into summer so this is my time of growth and opportunity. I want to make sure as Iām in full throttle that Iām full throttling the right direction.
I always take the last half of June, just like I do the lasthalf of December. As Iām going into that winter change, I do the same thing where the focus is more on my mind and my lifestyle. How am I doing?
I actually have gone through and updated my planner. Gearing up for 3rd quarter. I spent some time this week making sure that I had July ready to go, updating my goals and then had my weeks all set so that I can put in those big rocks because if the big rocks arenāt in there they wonāt happen. Then I have my playbook pages so that I can do a daily journal to keep all of my summer growth on track.
I have a tendency to get of course if I donāt have thatstructure. So, itās time for inventory and check in. How are you doing?
We are going to take an inventory together right now. Thiswill help you identify what you need to focus on this second half of the year.
If you are listening to this podcast and itās not either winteror summer season change, itās okay. You can do this at any time and itās still going to benefit you.
Grab a piece of paper and letās go!
Weāre going to go over seven of the systems of the LivingWOW framework and I want you to rate from 0-10. Zero being, you have either no awareness of it or itās something you really struggle with. Ten being that you have total awareness and have mastered it. You totally have it. You are thriving.
1) Energy- Critical in the summer! Do you have enough energy to be able to run full out? To be able to grow? To be able to do what you want to do? Rate 0-10
2) Food and water- Food and water are your fuel and that changes in summer. Are you dialed into those differences of nature? Whatās the season where you live? Thatās the first place to start. What is in season? What is available at the farmerās market? Take your cues from nature. Rate 0-10
3) Self-care and movement- Are you taking time for yourself? Are you moving your body? Are you out in nature? Are you getting out, taking it in, and filling your soul? Rate 0-10
4) Supplements- This should change seasonally also. You should not be taking the same supplements day in and dayout. Thatās not what a supplement is. A supplement is to support areas that need more nutrients. Are you adjusting your supplements based on the changes in your systems with the seasons or doing the same regimen every day? Rate 0-10
5) Mind and intelligence- This is your learning. This is your belief system. Are you open to growth? Are you planning? Are you excited? Do you spend your spring cultivating ideas and opportunities and now in the summer youāre ready to take them on and receive them or are you no different today than yesterday, tomorrow doesnāt matter. Limiting beliefs? Lots of fear and scarcity? Been there. Thatās where my autoimmune diseases were born, was living in that mindset. What is the tape you have playingin your head? What is your mind telling you that it can or cannot accomplish? What environment are you allowing yourself to be in that is supporting or defeating you? Rate 0-10
6) Spirit- Your spirit is that voice of truth. Who were you born to be? Who are you really? Are you slowing down and listening? Do you trust that voice of truth inside of you? Do you feel doubt or broken so you donāt trust your spirit? Maybe so busy youāre distracted or disconnected? Maybe you have a personal connection with your creator and your faith is strong. Rate 0-10
7) Autoimmune (AI) condition- In the Living WOW framework for thriving your AI conditions are the outwardmanifestation of what is happening on the inside. Are you listening to your AI conditions, your symptoms? For me, itās fatigue, itās my skin, itās my organs, itās pain. With my cocktail of conditions those are the areas that tend to giveme the most indicator. What do your symptoms tell you? Are you in a flare? Are you in crisis? Are you hurting? Are you exhausted? Do you have energy? Are your conditions in remission or submission? Rate 0-10
Iām not saying this to be proud or boastful at all. Iāmsaying it because I want you to know you can get there because Iāve been at zeros at all seven of these systems throughout my life. When Iām in that 5 and under, it shows. Thatās where I end up in disease. And when I can be 6-10, Iām on the upside and Iām making progress. I can feel it. Sometimes itāll slide back down and then I have to course correct.
What I want you to do now is look at what are the 3 lowest scores. What 3 systems do you have the lowest score in? Thatās where I want you to spend your time. Do a deep dive and figure out. If youāre in the southernhemisphere, it ās a great time to deep dive and really work on those 3 areas. If youāre in the northern hemisphere and itās summer, its action!
Do something about it, not just think about it and planabout it, but do something about it. If youāre not happy with where your self-care and your movement is, get outside, get moving.
Donāt feel defeated. Donāt feel like you canāt do this. Youcan, I promise you, because it feels so good to be thriving with autoimmune diseases. It feels so good to be thriving with life in general and just living in spite of these autoimmune diseases.
Step out of SAD. Step into WOW. Embrace the season change. Listen to your body. Follow nature. Come and join us with living WOW.
Until next time,
Shine on!

Introduction and Changes in the Podcast
Welcome back to Living WOW Out Loud. I am your host,CallyRae! It has been a long time since Iāve downloaded a new episode orrecorded a new episode, and I am back. Iām super excited but there have beenmany changes that have happened since I took what I thought was going to be a 3month pause from the podcast so that I could get through that senior year ofhigh school with my last daughter at home and it turned into a year and a half.
Transitioning from Surviving to Thriving
Iāll review some of the changes that have happened while Iāvebeen away and lay out the new season structure and purpose. Some announcementsare made regarding new content coming this season as I move from transformationcoach with 8 Lessons Lupus Taught Me: From Surviving to Thriving with AutoimmuneDiseases and the Change Your Story Presentation. This season I function as alifestyle engineer having created the framework to thrive with autoimmunediseases Living WOW and serving as your guide to become the expert in your body.
The Power of Lifestyle Choices in Autoimmune Health
Iām not alone and we now have scientific research coming outthatās actually giving the āwhyā I had the experience that Iāve had and that Iāmnot just a one-off, Iām not an anomaly, but that it is lifestyle and that ourlifestyle really does affect our health and can change things. Yes, we have agenetic predisposition but that doesnāt mean that itās set in stone. We are now startingto really understand why.
Iām talking about a lifestyle. Iām not talking about howmuch wealth you have or your fashion. Iām talking about the choices you makeday in and day out for what you put in your mind, what you put in your mouth, whatyou put in your heart.
Right? Those choices you make. How you spend your time, the choices you make have an absolute direct impact on your health. Yourlifestyle has a 100% impact on your health.
Building A Supportive Community
There is a second book coming but this is kind of a sneakpeek here on the podcast. This will be more interactive, I hope. I really wantto engage the community.
As I look around and listen to different narratives and differentconversations, I think you need me too. Because I feel like you need theinformation and inspiration. You need to know that you are enough. You need toknow that youāre not broken and in disrepair. Our bodies are designed to healif we give them the environment to do so.

Last week I promised you that I would introduce you to some interpreters for Body Language. The crazy thing is that you are innately equipped to speak fluent Body Language but just like any language you need to learn, practice, and refine your communication skills.
Living in the modern world with access to information and technology on a continual basis has in many ways stunted our development and understanding of Body Language. Continuous and often loud or conflicting messages can be overwhelming to tune out and go within to hear and feel what your body is speaking to you.
The conversation starter questions I introduced last week can be paired with these interpreters to plug in, practice, and develop fluency in Body Language.
Recognize that this is an ongoing process and resist the urge to get frustrated or feel like you are not ādoing it rightā. Remember that you are innately designed for this language. Just like you learned your native language in your home rapidly in the first 5 years of your life you have continued to refine and learn throughout your life.
If you donāt understand all of the nuances of Body Language immediately thatās normal. Itās not that you canāt. Find the modality that works best for you and build on it. You will likely find that as you become more fluent, opportunities will present themselves for you to go deeper and learn more and heal more. Life has a funny way of providing opportunities for you to learn Body Language. Recognizing and showing up in class to learn is the hard part.
I guarantee if you show up, your body will reciprocate and you will thrive as the expert in your body.
Although this list is not comprehensive, it is foundational and powerful. I specifically chose the modalities that are powerful, easy, accessible, and possibly already familiar to you. Again, donāt feel like you have to use all of them. Start with one or two and explore to see how it connects for you. Just like you had a favorite teacher in school you will likely find that you will find a favorite interpreter. As your skills or communication needs change you may choose a different interpreter that you arenāt ready for today.
Here are my top 8 Body Language Interpreters!
1~Breathwork
2~Meditation
3~Tapping/EFT
4~Massage
5~Yoga
6~Qigong/Tai Chi
7~Energy Work
8~Ama Bodywork/Reflexology

One of the most obvious ways your body communicates with you is what you may recognize as a symptom. Your body speaks to you both negatively and positively but because of our human negativity bias for survival, you will likely focus on the pain in your back rather than the strength in your back. There is a natural tendency to focus on what is wrong rather than what is right.
Last week's episode introduced the concept that wholeness, health, and optimal vitality are the natural condition of the body. It is from that state of ease and flow that the body seeks to communicate. In other words, you are innately designed to thrive, seeking to maintain that natural state of health that has been sabotaged by the physical environment and human experience that the body navigates on a daily basis. You are also uniquely equipped to understand your Body Language as you remember the simplicity and truth that your body speaks.
Questions can be a powerful way to initiate communication and can help you maintain and deepen a conversation. Questions are essential to understanding and building a relationship. When you meet someone for the first time you may ask information-seeking questions such as "How are you?" or "How can I help you?". You likely ask and answer those questions throughout your day giving it little thought or effort because it allows for a superficial answer of "fine" or "I'm good".
If you have a relationship with your communication partner you may ask a deeper question such as "How was work/school?" "What would you like to eat for dinner?" The truth is that the time you spend asking questions and the depth of those questions is a direct reflection of your investment in the relationship.
Why is it so important to ask and not assume? Because everyone wants to be heard and know that they matter. Assuming automatically devalues the relationship putting it back to the superficial level of exchanges that you automatically sift through all day, every day without attention. Asking maintains and deepens the conversation, which in turn will maintain and deepen the relationship.
If you elevate this communication from an informal interaction to an intimate exchange it quickly moves from exchanging verbalizations to recognizing emotions and feelings. The door slammed with a longer than usual pause behind a locked bathroom door will surely lead to a different question and tone of compassion and concern. In contrast, when you notice the smile and spark in her eye and know exactly why she is glowing and can ask the question of how she wants to celebrate.
Here are 8 questions that you can start with. You may notice that each question correlates with one of the systems in the Framework to Becoming the Expert in Your Body. You'll also notice that the way that system speaks to you will be different and what you understand may develop as your relationship with that system within your body deepens and trust grows. Isn't that true in every relationship? The more you ask, the more you learn. The more time you invest, the more connection you create. The more you understand, the more you trust.

In today's episode let's take a look, or really a listen, at what Body Language sounds like. You likely already have some familiarity just like you do when you see someone speaking sign language or hear a foreign language that you have familiarity with but not necessarily a personal understanding or use. You recognize some aspects but they don't carry any meaning for you because you don't have the pronunciation, vocabulary, or grammar to interpret them.
The amount you tune in to one of these foreign conversations is likely dependent upon your level of knowledge and interest. When you begin to study a language you begin to recognize the pronunciation or vocabulary and suddenly begin to listen or watch more intently to see if you can understand anything.
Body Language is interesting because it is not a language you hear or see but more accurately described as the voice you feel. Your body speaks through energy, emotion, feelings, thoughts, intuition, and sensations. The degree to which you tune in or recognize the language will increase as you develop more awareness and training with vocabulary and interpretation.
Another unique characteristic of Body Language is its innate nature. Unlike a native language that is learned based on where you were born and the language spoken in your family and community. You were born to speak Body Language which is universal to all humankind. Your Body Language is unique to you but it is a matter of remembering and understanding it, rather than learning the sounds, characters, and rules such as spoken and written languages.
Recognizing the simplicity rather than getting bogged down in the complexity of Body Language is refreshing as you learn this foundational skill for becoming the expert in your body. Starting from the understanding that health is the natural condition of the body, let's call it "ease". Any kind of situation, behavior, or experience that moves your body away from the natural condition could be called "dis-ease".
Because your body is constantly trying to maintain the natural condition of ease, it speaks to you and within you continually to monitor and adjust for circumstances. Your physical experience is the outward manifestation of what is happening with that internal dialogue and as a result can be simply adjusted by tuning in and being a good listener.
In a very noisy world, the question is who are you listening to? Referencing back to the 8 Systems Framework you'll recall that there is a driver who usually gets all of the attention because she is in your driver's seat on this journey but the navigation system is actually the smarts of the operation because it is programmed with a perfect knowledge of your specific journey.
The driver is your mind that is constantly surveying the situation and your surroundings to keep you safe so that you make it to your destination. It is programmed with a negativity bias that focuses on survival at all costs. This is the mental tape running based on your beliefs, knowledge, and the messages of the world around you. The driver is skilled at keeping you safe but is not necessarily using all of the information available to you.
The navigation system is your spirit that is programmed not only with your destination but also the entirety of the journey and all of the specifications of your specific unique vehicle, aka your body. Your navigation system is able to see beyond the conscious and unconscious communications of the mind. This is the intuition you feel when something is right for you and it resonates with joy or peace or when something is not right for you and you feel unsettled or confused.
Tuning in to the conversation within, between the driver and navigation system, is where you begin to remember your Body Language and recognize the language as communication that has been drowned out by the noise of life.

Last episode I introduced you to Body Language and invited you to take on learning the language that your body speaks to you. Did you do your homework? Did you learn to count to 8 in Body Language? If so you have a foundational knowledge of the communication environment of your body! Your binge listening and review of the 8 Lessons and the 8 Systems has created a communication-rich environment for learning.
If you haven't done your homework, you can still listen to today's language lesson but don't expect to become fluent if you don't practice. You must create an environment for learning and practice or you will never learn a new language. This Body Language series will build as we go so if you haven't yet, go back and binge a few hours of listening to get your learning environment primed for communication. 8 Lessons Lupus Taught Me can be found in the Bonus Episode series and the 8 System Framework to Becoming the Expert in Your Body summer series is found in episodes 13-21.
So just like your Spanish teacher starts speaking to you in Spanish when you enter the classroom, I'm going to immerse you in Body Language terminology as I teach you how to understand and communicate with your body.
Before we begin to learn vocabulary and translation it's important to first learn the foundational skills of communication. Namely joint attention, turn-taking, and topic maintenance.
These foundational skills are required in any communication exchange and may include both verbal and non-verbal components. A breakdown in any of these areas will result in a communication breakdown and either a misunderstanding or the abandonment of the communication exchange altogether. Because they are an essential foundation let's break them down a little to make sure you are able and willing to be an active and willing communication partner.
Is it any wonder that as a culture of SAD (Standard American Diet and Lifestyle) the communication dyad with our bodies has been ignored and lost resulting in the loss of Body Language that was widely recognized and understood by ancient civilizations?
Your body is innately designed to heal. Health is the natural state of the body. The communication of your Body Language is the outward physical manifestation of what is happening inward that you cannot see or touch but you can feel and experience.
Now that you have the basics of communication it's time to start translating. Join me next week as we begin to introduce some core vocabulary of Body Language so that you can regain the relationship you were born to have with your body.

Are you ready to learn a new language in 2023? Learning a new language is proven to stimulate new neural pathways and keep the mind sharp. While it is true that the younger you are, the easier it is to learn a new language, it is possible to learn a new language at any age.
The language I would like to introduce you to is Body Language. This is not the body language you probably already speak fluently which we professionally refer to as nonverbal and pragmatic language. Rather, I am referring to the language of your body. How your body speaks to you and how you respond to those messages.
Becoming fluent in your Body Language is the secret to becoming the expert in your body and that is the mission of Living WOW. I have spent the past 30 years studying and teaching the brain and oral mechanisms of speech and language development and rehabilitation. I have also spent the past 15 years studying and teaching nutritional healing and lifestyle medicine. So is it any wonder that I recognize this unique communication we have within us and recognize the need for a universal teaching of Body Language?
Iām going to wager that you are completely unaware of your Bodyās Language and that this concept is probably as unfamiliar to you as any foreign language you could learn in school or with an app. As a result, Iām going to break down the process of learning Body Language in a new series here on the podcast throughout the month of December. Over the next 5 weeks, I will introduce you to your Body Language and give you the tools to translate while you learn to listen, understand, and eventually speak fluent Body Language.
So first some basics. You cannot learn any language without a model. You cannot learn a language without rules or some sort of universal understanding. You cannot learn any language without practice. While it is true that language acquisition is an innately wired skill, it is still something you were taught either informally (your native language) or formally (additional languages) and likely a little of both. Meaning that you likely learned the languages you speak both informally through your family and community as well as formally through education and training.
Along those lines, you probably are adept at the language of your generation, profession, and culture. Examples of these language nuances are demonstrated in what is known as code-switching. An example is the difference in how we speak to our parents versus our friends. The way professionals speak universal jargon such as technology, medical, and financial terminology with ease and understanding but persons outside the profession need to have it āinterpretedā into common language. Even within our culture and communities, language is used differently creating an understanding between some and disconnection with others. Donāt believe me? Would you be at all uncomfortable if the same language was used in church that is used at the bar?
So why do I bother to go into all of these details? Because you need to understand why you donāt speak Body Language when everything in your mind is telling you that you do. At best, you have what is known as āfunctional communicationā which is basic survival communication. Think of the vocabulary and understanding of a 1-year-old. I have functional communication in American Sign Language (ASL), German, and Spanish with formal and informal training in each of them but I am in no way fluent in any of them. Why? Because I did not regularly practice and communicate with others using those languages so I forgot much of the vocabulary that was beyond the primitive basics like counting, personal needs, and greetings.
