  • Welcome to the Episode 41 of Murder & Mayhem: South African True Crime.

    About the episode:

“I am a charming psychopath and grateful to be a clever serial killer”.

These are the shocking words of not only an aspiring crime writer but a cold blooded murderer. The crime he committed sent shockwaves through the nation for its brutal nature. An innocent woman his victim, none the wiser to the dark intentions of someone who was watching her; biding his time- from just metres away from her home.

And as the case unfolded and more evidence came to light, the disturbing mind of this man became known to the public. During a year full of violence towards women from a murder in a post office to the murder of a young girl and her grandfather by a family member- this case reaffirmed the fact that GBV is out of control in our beloved country.

This is the senseless and heartbreaking case of the murder of Lynette Volschenk.

    About the episode:

About the episode: It is said that no one can love you, like a mother can. That blood is thicker than water and that family is more important than anything else. What happens though when a mother is pushed to breaking point? What could drive her to do the unthinkable? And what happens after?

    About the episode:

From the outside, they seemed to be the perfect family- a doting father and a seemingly caring mother with three happy little girls all living in suburban bliss. • Welcome to the Episode 34 of Murder & Mayhem: South African True Crime.

    About the episode:

Described as the worst massacre Cape Town and the country had ever experienced, in 2003, 9 innocent men lost their lives in a brutal and heart wrenching manner. The police would arrive at the unsuspecting Seapoint property to find not only the radio blasting the lyrics…

Life is too short to have sorrow. You may be here today and gone tomorrow…”

…but that the inside the house on 7 Graham road resembled a blood bath. Copious amounts of blood pooled on the floors, splattered the walls and even the ceilings. The area would later be described as having the stench of petrol, blood and death hanging in the air. As the events of the night would later transpire, friends, family and onlookers would be left questioning so much.

This is the gut wrenching case of the Sizzlers Massacre.

  • Welcome to the Episode 32 of Murder & Mayhem: South African True Crime.

    About the episode:

After years of hard work, sacrifices and dedication- one young woman was on the path to making all of her dreams come true. A new job, an apartment of her own and her very first car were all achievements that she was so proud of.

A man, so close to her, so loved by her, was watching her succeed during this time but instead of joy- resentment was building. Bitter at his own failings and unable to accept accountability for his behaviours, he did something so horrific that the small town of Clanwilliam would never forget. On that fateful day in October, the only mistake that this woman would make was trusting the wrong person.

    About the episode:

8 years old, with dreams of becoming a lawyer or doctor forever extinguished as a result of one twisted man’s actions. A man who was no stranger to the legal system.

A man who was given far too many second chances. This little girl’s death would spark outrage and once again bring to light the ever growing concerns of the leniency and judgement of South Africa’s legal system. She was not his first victim; but she will hopefully be the last.

This is the story of a life cut short and a man too twisted to comprehend.

    About the episode:

A young girl is reported missing- snatched just metres away from the entrance of her school. A city is frantically searching for her, sharing her image on all media platforms.

That very same afternoon in another part of the city- a woman is making a cup of tea. She sits down on her couch, switches on the tv just as a familiar face flashes across the screen. The words ‘suspect’ appear below the identikit of this rather unremarkable but yet recognisable face. The woman stifles a gasp and immediately reaches over for her phone. On the other end of the line- the police hear a female speaking and she says: “I saw the identikit and I think I know the man you’re looking for”.

  • Welcome to the Episode 27 of Murder & Mayhem: South African True Crime.

    About the episode:

This case at first glance reads more like a strange movie plot. An axe wielding assailant striking at the dead of night. A narrative detailing a father’s revenge for a monstrous crime committed against his daughter.

And at the trial when this man is eventually caught- a plea of insanity; of diminished criminal capacity.

And at the helm of it all, a former professional South African rugby player turned serial killer But this is not a movie script, this is real life.

And this is the disturbing case of Phindile Joseph Ntshongwana.

  • Welcome to the Episode 26 of Murder & Mayhem: South African True Crime.

    About the episode:

Described as one of the most vile serial killers in South African history, this man committed the most heinous and disturbing acts over a period of years. He went undetected and it was only by sheer coincidence that he would eventually be discovered.

With no remorse; no inhibitions; and no regrets- his victims suffered cruel and harsh deaths at his hands.

He would also become an anomaly, one of the only known serial killers in history to end the life of his own flesh and blood.

This is the disturbing case of Stewart Wilken- known to many as Boetie Boer.

  • Welcome to the Episode 24 of Murder & Mayhem: South African True Crime.

    About the episode:

What happens when a serial killer cannot be classified? What happens when a perpetrator seems to have no single Modus Operandi or victim profile? How do you even attempt to piece together a puzzle to catch the face behind the trail of destruction when you don’t have all the pieces?

Today, I will be discussing one such killer- a man who used five different methods of killing; a man who didn’t pursue one type of victim; a man who remains a terrifying enigma.

This is the case of one of the most cold-blooded serial killers South Africa has ever known- Cedric Maake.
