In 1944, a fire at the Ringling Brothers circus in Hartford, Connecticut became one of the worst tragedies in American history, killing at least 168 people and injuring 700 more. Investigators blamed a carelessly thrown cigarette for igniting the flame that took down the big top. But six years later, all eyes turned to Ohio when a Circleville man confessed to setting the fire as a 15-year-old roustabout with the circus. Was he telling the truth?

For half a century, the Mirmans served an East Akron neighborhood as its local grocer, and everyone knew Robert Mirman, the third generation of the family to run the store. The Mirmans knew robberies were part of the business, and survived several of them. But in 1981, someone entered the store and stabbed Robert numerous times, killing him in a vicious act that was very uncharacteristic of a routine robbery. Forty-five years later, police still don't know who - or why. Unresolved is a collaboration between Ohio Mysteries and the Akron Beacon Journal.

In the fall of 1984, the east side of Cleveland and its eastern suburbs were rocked by four chillingly-similar murders - all 14-year-old girls, strangled to death while going about their daily routine. But this was not the work of a serial killer. In time, police would catch and convict three killers in three cases, leaving one still-open homicide. The family of Leslie Cross, murdered on her way to deliver a birthday present and left in the hall of a Bedford Heights apartment building, is still waiting for justice.

First — In the late 1800s, Fremont native William Zeigler offered a theory that took England by storm, suggesting that the work of William Shakespeare was secretly the product of a contemporary, Christopher Marlowe. Second - The story of Garrettsville native Hart Crane, a beloved poet who became one of the literary greats of his generation, until personal struggles led him to jump from a ship into the ocean.

In 1986, Columbus police responded to a horribly mutilated body being found in a dumpster near the Ohio State University campus. It turned out to be David Hadaway, a local 19-year-old All-American boy next door with no history of trouble. To this day, police have not been able to find out a motive, a crime scene, or even a suspect.

Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries: Backroads. In Flip Side. The Story of Billy Milligan, we dive deep into the incredible and unsettling story of Billy Milligan — a man whose life became a landmark case in the study of dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder). From his traumatic childhood to his time spent in psychiatric hospitals, this episode examines the intersection of mental illness, criminal justice, and the human psyche. Was Billy Milligan a victim, a criminal, or both? And what does his story tell us about the limits of the law and the understanding of mental health?
