How terrifying would it be to fight an unknown enemy? One you don’t recognize and didn’t see coming? What if that enemy was coming from within; a disease that even doctors couldn’t identify? Nearly half of all Americans suffer from some chronic illness and many struggle for an accurate diagnosis.
Every other week on Symptomatic, host Lauren Bright Pacheco unravels the medical mystery of a patient’s baffling symptoms and explores how their lives were turned upside down in search of answers.
From the first signs of trouble, through a swirl of misdirection and failed treatment attempts, to the final relief at a confirmed diagnosis - these are their stories. This is Symptomatic.
We want to hear from you! Tell us what you think of the show or share your own medical mystery by emailing us at [email protected].

The practice of medicine–filled with moments of joy, suffering, grace, sorrow, and hope–offers a window into the human condition. Though serving as guides and companions to patients’ illness experiences is profoundly meaningful work, the busy nature of modern medicine can blind its own practitioners to the reasons they entered it in the first place. Join resident physician Henry Bair and oncologist Tyler Johnson as they meet with doctors, patients, leaders, educators, and others in healthcare, to explore stories on finding and nourishing meaning in medicine. This podcast is for anyone striving for a deeper connection with their medical journey. Visit TheDoctorsArt.com for more information.

A diagnosis of cancer is life changing. We spend so much time discussing treatment plans and physical side effects of treatment but we don't always have the opportunity to truly discuss how a cancer diagnosis affects a woman emotionally -- her feelings, worries, and fears. However, these conversations need to take place. In this podcast, we will have these difficult conversations. I will be speaking with women who are all at various stages of cancer treatment. We will talk about anything and everything related to the cancer experience. Many women feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable at in-person support groups or may not have anyone to discuss their experiences with. My hope is that this podcast will provide support, encouragement, inspiration, hope, courage, and most importantly, strength to women as they navigate through their own cancer journey.
Cancer brings normal life to a halt. It creates an INTERLUDE. Let’s talk about it. -
