Patty Smith joined the reg forces at a time there were not many other women in the Army. At 30 years service - experiencing misogyny and traumatic memories of driving amongst land mines in the fields of Bosnia - and just days away from retirement, she was ordered to be assessed for potential mental health injuries.
Medically retired, hospitalised as a result of domestic violence, and in the process of distancing herself from her biological family, everything in her life rapidly about-faced.
This Canadian Armed Forces veteran shares the ups and downs of her ongoing journey, as well as her advice for others who are struggling.

At 13 years old, he used cocaine with his drug-addicted dad. In high school, he kicked ass on the football field.
Then he joined the United States Marine Corps and later served in Desert Storm (Kuwait), where he witnessed the horrors of war.
When he came home and struggled with operational stress injuries, he found God.

As a first responder, horrible scenes are often the only places you spend time with first responders of other services. The YXEFRFF committee of five have been changing that reality.
Saskatoon police officer Ang McEwen and paramedic Nathan Rollack, both of YXE First Responders Fitness Festival, speak about their success last year, the money they have raised for mental health and the number of people it has helped, the work involved with bringing together teams of firefighters, police officers & paramedics to compete against each other, and the plans for this year's festival in October.

September Froggley’s personal journey has led her to the conclusion that any hope of curing mental health is not about pills, but rather human connection.
Depression, drugs, disassociation, addiction, stints in rehab, addictions again, suicide, grief, and a culminating attempt to save others.
This is how one amazing woman is fanning the flames of change.

They say that all good things must come to end. If that's the case, then by logic, all bad things must also come to an end, otherwise no other good things would happen.
This episode will always be very, very special on account of my co-host... who I'll leave unnamed here.
Just take the time to listen... it's a fairly relaxing, yet transitional journey.

Tired of death notifications, fatal motor vehicle collisions, and arresting criminals who were released quicker than paperwork could be completed, Chris Whittemore left his gig as a Texas State Trooper in 2004 and returned to the United States Marine Corps.
2005. Ramadi, Iraq. Sniper.
2007: Fallujah, Iraq. Weapons Tech.
2010: Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Crew Chief / Door Gunner.
During the episode, S/Sgt. (ret) Whittemore discusses the realities of coping with the horrors of war, the fight against the stigmas of PTS(D), and trying to find a way to transition back into the civilian world.
As Chris states in his book Terror to Triumph, "The most unnerving reality that would surface after returning home for all of us is that no matter how many issues you have, and no matter how many times you hear information about seeking help... no one wants to be that guy."

2009. Dawson Creek, British Columbia. On day one of work, the unit's first (and still only) female firefighter is pulled aside by her most senior Captain. He said, "There's something you need to know. If you get yourself in any trouble, we're not coming to save you. You're on your own."
14 years later, with 4 shifts remaining until retirement, A/Capt. Lynette Fritshaw decided it was time to stop hiding their secret and start sharing her story. Harassment. Bullying. Misogyny. And that doesn't include the other traumas of the job.
This episode is the first time she has stepped out to speak about her journey.

While planning to commit suicide, Chad Kennedy dove into a bottle of Captain Morgan rum. Intoxication spilled into social media when he posted a promise to walk the country for post traumatic stress awareness. Rather than abandon the idea when sober, he instead embraced it... and in doing so, Sea to Sea for PTSD was born.
Recorded live and on location at Ol' Biddy's Brewhouse (Sackville, Nova Scotia), teammates Lisa Ellsworth and Rick Chorney join Chad to share their personal journeys, as well as the adventures, close-calls and impacts of walking coast to coast while they rely on each other to manage the struggles of their diagnoses.

Derrick May summarizes his journey as a lifelong project. It unarguably has been a bumpy ride on a treacherous road through storm after storm.
Despite that, he keeps pushing through until he falls... then he picks himself up and pushes through again.
Sexually molested as a child, Derrick chose a life in the Canadian Armed Forces to get away from his hometown of Saint John, New Brunswick. Though he never deployed to a combat zone, he survived trauma in the military when he was once again sexually assaulted by his brothers in arms.
During the episode, Derrick talks about his struggles with alcohol, violence, gambling, weight gain, intimate relationships, social dissociation and the military police, as well as what he has done to pull himself through all the fires before him.
