Hello and welcome to a new episode of Picture Perfect City Radio.

This episode I’m talking about some of the experiences of autumn in New York

The connection between poetry and photography and the reading of new poem.

    City Harvest

    It’s autumn in the city

    It’s a harvest of experiences

It’s the crunching of orange and rose colored leaves under your shoes momentarily blocking the sound of traffic from your ears

It is walks through postcard looking parks

Even better when someone is holding your hand

    It’s erratic weather forecasts

Yesterday felt like spring, but now it doesn’t

Less fresh fruit street vendors and more guys selling knit caps and gloves with weak thread counts

It’s small hot cups of coffee or tea to fend off any chills while waiting for the bus

    Will it ever come?

Families and friends gathering for feasts to display gratitude as noisy radiators conduct their symphonies and strangers seek shelters in corners that become even more unforgiving as the calendar counts down

Yesterday felt like spring, but now it doesn’t.

  • In the latest episode of Picture Perfect City Radio I talk about how New York City offers many places that you can call “home” without actually living there.

The city’s greatest appeal is the diversity of experiences that exist, and these experiences are most defined by location, from history in Harlem, to the sights and tastes of Flushing, Queens, to the corners of Greenwich Village, but many neighborhoods offer more than just an excursion or work locale for city dwellers, these places can offer comfort, a sense of belonging, and respite.

The definition of home can be expanded by other spaces and in New York you have a lot of real estate to work with.

  • In the latest episode of the companion podcast, I talk about my most recent post about winter in New York, and how despite these gray days that can make you feel blue, you still can discover a lot in New York with your camera. There’s intrigue and sometimes even wonder to be found in the contrast that exist in spaces between seasons.

Flushing Meadows Corona Park (December 2008)

I also discuss a recent NY Times article about Gen Z’s apparent fascination with decades old point and shoot digital cameras. Does the urge to appeal authentic for the sake of cultural distinction just another trend or an earnest pushback against sleek polished imagery?

Want Didn’t I Say On The Podcast?

I love the irony that younger generations often look and borrow from the past to forge something “new” while some among older generations fixate on what’s considered “in”, an attempt to not be out of style, but which eventually leads them back to trends and fashions they already experienced and participated in. Culture isn’t a single line, it’s a circle.

  • In this episode of the podcast, I discuss what it really means to ask someone to take their picture, battling camera shyness, and the importance of remembrance and images. Even if you don’t consider yourself photogenic, the lens may still be your friend.

What Didn’t I Say On The Podcast?

The age of the selfie has often been depicted or perceived as one of peak narcissism, and while that aspect is certainly on display in many cases, I also see this era of selfies and TikTok videos as not just fueled by mass media influenced ego but by a transcendent longing that we all share, and that is to be known, for our presence to be recognized in one form or another. Many seek fame but most just want affirmation of their existence, through the eyes and acknowledgment of others is the only way reality gets confirmed, or else it really could all just be a dream.

  • For the latest episode of Picture Perfect City Radio, I’m talking about what I call odyssey opportunity, a self given universal license that practicing photography can provide, but what is it? A camera in your hand invites exploration, a journey that can lead to many paths. I also talk about the presence of the camera and the photographer and what role that plays in documenting experiences and people. In the world of physics there is the observer effect, the thought that observing an object or event can invoke change, an idea that’s no stranger to human behavior and is part of this odyssey opportunity.

What did’t I say on the podcast?

When I think of legendary documentary photographers like Gordon Parks and Robert Frank and others held in that same high regard, one of the first things that comes to my mind in relation to their work is empathy. I think an appreciation and understanding of our shared humanity is just an important as equipment or technique. Is it too sentimental to see the lens as an extension of the heart?

And of course odyssey opportunities are not exclusive to documentary and street photography. The first artist that really opened my eyes to how wide and expansive photography could be as a storytelling medium is conceptual artist Cindy Sherman, whose iconic self portraits have inspired a generation of artists. Sherman along with others from the Pictures Generation, in addition to the works of Alex Prager are constant reminders to me that the camera can take you everywhere from reality to imagination and all that resides in between.

  • Photo: The High Line (2010)

In the latest episode of Picture Perfect City Radio, I’m talking about the hesitation one might have when trying to pick the right camera, and why this type of thinking might be an obstacle not only for photography but for life in general. So, often we are waiting for the right thing or being in the right place, or something else before we begin an endeavor or engage in an inspired pursuit, but sometimes this is just an excuse that conveniently shields us from failure and fears. Often in photography the “right moment” happens by accident, it’s not that you had intense special preparation or the world’s greatest equipment, the most important thing was that you were there. From art and business to adventure and romance, you have to start somehow and somewhere, so why not right now?

  • Brooklyn (2021)

In the most recent episode of Picture Perfect City Radio, I talk about the wonders of the New York and how it’s important for New Yorkers to see the city in the eyes of visitors, to appreciate what’s easy to take for granted. I also talk about approaching your surroundings with intention and awareness, camera or no camera.

  • In the very first episode of the companion podcast I talk about when is the right and wrong time to capture images of people, or most importantly how are subjects presented, in a social media driven society where everyone has recording and photography capabilities on their mobile phones and where voyeurism for the voyeurism, or a cheap laugh has become the norm. It makes me wonder about the responsibility we all have with these devices and in particular what the craft of photography and its practitioners have in leading the conversation.
