Emma Grede recently had a hot take that work-life balance is not your jobâs responsibility. Many people thought it was a controversial opinion, but it made us think. What relationship do we need with work so we can also show up in our lives? That answer looks different for each of us, and at different moments of our lives. We believe our lives and our happiness are our responsibilityâŠbut that doesnât mean employers are fully off the hook.
In this episode, we chat about:
- whether you can really balance work-life balance with ambition
- learning that balance rarely means 50-50
- moving from an employee mindset to an employer mindset
- better questions to ask in a job interview to suss out work-life balance
- & so much more!

âThe Let Them Theoryâ is the latest bestselling book by Mel Robbins, who is an award-winning podcast host, #1 New York Times bestselling author, and one of the worldâs most respected experts in mindset, life improvement, and behavior change. âThe Let Them Theoryâ is a step-by-step guide on how to stop letting other people's opinions, drama, and judgment impact your life.
We loved how the theory Mel describes in this book helps you free yourself from the exhausting cycle of trying to manage everything and everyone around you. Weâre all control freaks and this book is a great tool for anyone (like us) whoâs learning to relinquish that.
In this episode, we chat about:
- why âlet themâ is not letting go
- pushing past negative opinions and disappointing people
- overcoming emotional overwhelm
- using this theory to navigate adult friendships, and support loved ones through change
- how to be more effective at nagging and influencing others
- & so much more!
In Melâs words, âLet Them is strength. Itâs releasing the grip you have on how things should go and allowing them to unfold the way they will go. Youâre making an active, empowered choice to release control you never truly had.â

This is a spicy one! For many of us who were taught to be âgood girlsâ as children, we grew up learning prioritizing certain values that suppressed a lot of individual expression and experimentation. Now, as adults, we have to unlearn a lot of those habits to find balance and success. Itâs a strange trap that many of us get stuck in and this week weâre unpacking that.
In this episode, we talk about:
- what it means to be a âgood girlâ vs. a good person
- why what weâre rewarded for as girls can hold you back as an adult
- birth order theory (hugs for other older daughters)
- being labeled âdifficultâ and why thatâs triggering
- whether women police each otherâs behaviors more than men

The spotlight effect is a psychological phenomenon where we overestimate how much people are paying attention to us or judging our perceived shortcomings. Basically, itâs the reason we think everyone is obsessed with us, when they usually arenât. Worse, itâs also preventing a lot of people from getting started on their piloting journeys.
This week, we chat about:
- why youâre probably not the main character in everyone elseâs story
- the problem with letting your ego hold you back (go be cringe!)
- whether the spotlight effect gets better or worse with age
- & so much more!

The common wisdom is that we should always choose consistency over intensity, but is that always the best advice? We value consistency â and both want to work on this personally â but sometimes there are moments or activities that require a more intense approach or sprint to the finish.
This week, we chat about:
- how sustainable an intensity-minded approach really is
- whether people are naturally inclined to be better at consistency or intensity
- navigating consistency vs. intensity in relationships and teams
- & many running and fitness metaphors!

Have you ever found yourself busy working on a project but having nothing to show for it at the end of the week? Guilty. Many of us can easily get caught in a loop of systems, checklists, and processes only to realize weâre not actually moving forward. It can be hard to tell when to dedicate more time to planning and setup and when to prioritize doing the work (and refining as you go).
To figure this out, we discuss:
- Questions to ask yourself when deciding whether to focus on progress or process
- When overprocessing is a mask for perfectionism and procrastination
- The luxury of anonymity and making progress when no oneâs watching
- Using challenges to create momentum and actually get things done
- & so much more!

Weâve all hit periods when the honeymoon is over or youâve hit a plateau and youâre too fatigued to keep the momentum going. Itâs a familiar feeling of being tired or lacking motivationâwhether itâs a professional or personal pursuit.
To get out of these ruts, we discuss:
- recognizing the different types of exhaustion (from overwhelm to boredom)
- why overindulgence and deprioritizing self-care arenât a long-term fix
- tips for redirecting restlessness into something energizing that you can use
- knowing when to take a break or push through

Whether you call it a micro-retirement or a sabbatical or funemployment, the idea of taking a period of not working (or scaling back work) in the middle of your career isnât something new. Weâre all likely to be working longer, and living longer, so waiting until 65 to formally retire and enjoy your life doesnât feel like a guarantee the way it did for our parentsâ or grandparentsâ generation. RenĂ©e has taken one and highly recommends a break for anyone who can fit it into their budget and lifestyle.
This week, we discuss:
- planning your micro-retirement or career break
- if forced unemployment (like a layoff or firing) counts?
- using the break to relieve burnout, pursue passion projects, or pivot careers
- building a balanced life/career where you donât need breaks
- and so much more!

Like many people, we are huge fans of the hit Apple TV+ show Severance. Itâs very bingeable and made us think about our own POVs on compartmentalizing our work and career from the rest of our lives. Is focusing entirely on productivity at the office and then never bringing work home a sign of good work-life balance, or are there downsides to mentally writing off huge chunks of your day?
This week, weâre doing something different with a TV episode to chat about some of the showâs themesâwe promise no spoilers!â and discuss:
- if weâd choose severance
- whether âbringing your whole selfâ to work is ever a good idea
- embracing the many roles we play in life vs. limiting ourselves to one identity
- how similar our innies and outies would be
- and much more! (#PraiseKier)

Whether you live in the public eye or a more private life, sometimes the things we do or even just the way we exist in the world ruffles some feathers. It can feel like the more weâre doing big things or growing in popularity or visibility, the more we attract unwanted (and unwarranted) hate â especially for women. But the tradeoff is silencing yourself and not leaning into your greatnessâŠso we say, push through the criticism and do it anyway!
This week, we get into:
- the âcrabs in a bucketâ mentality
- pushing through the fear of standing out
- filtering the noise to find constructive criticism

Suzy Welch is a Professor of Management Practice at the NYU Stern School of Business, a business journalist, and best-selling author who coined the Velvet Coffin theory. This theory describes how waiting to change a job or life thatâs comfortable â but not your big dream â puts you in a metaphorical âvelvet coffinâ with a lid that slowly closes and traps you. Yikes!

Many people (including us) proudly wear the label of overachiever and enjoy being the kind of people to go above and beyond â in work and in other parts of life. But thatâs not always a good thing. Sometimes, it can actually create more problems than it solves.
This week, we unravel the downsides of being an overachiever, including:
- the challenge of setting unrealistic (and unsustainable) expectations about your capacity
- knowing where to put your extra energy and effort
- the pros and cons of overperforming during your first 30/60/90 days on the job
- the difference between being a high achiever and an overachiever
- why it doesnât have to be lonely at the top, if you build the right support network
- many, many automobile metaphors
Remember, âYou canât spell career without car.â
