    Thereā€™s nothing boring about earning well as a coach.

    Coaches often tell me that theyā€™ve been unofficially coaching for much of their lives before they took coach training. That was true for me as well.

    During University, my work study job was Peer Counseling and I loved it!

    In my last job as marketing director of a testing laboratory, my colleagues would seek me out, wanting a sounding board.

    It got to be that sometimes I couldnā€™t get my work done and I joked about putting up a sign on my door that said The Doctor Is NOT in.

    If youā€™re a new coach, this is a cautionary tale. If youā€™re not charging for coaching or charging low fees, Iā€™m especially talking to you.

    A coach contacted me who was 5 years into their business and they werenā€™t earning yet.

    They were considering quitting but really didnā€™t want to and invested in a Strategy Session with me to see what I thought they should do.

    This coach gave me permission to share details of our conversation. Iā€™ll call her Sherrie.

    Back when Sherrie finished coach training the pandemic hit, so having a big heart and feeling like people needed help, started coaching for free.

    But years later, this coach was still giving free weekly sessions to her only clients just hoping that at some point, they would value her services and start paying her.

    She was stuck in what I call Perpetual Student mode and was convinced that it was her clientā€™s role to value her in order for her to earn well.

    Most coaches will need a content approach to nurture their future clients. This is called generosity marketing and itā€™s still the #1 visibility approach for coaches.

    Sadly, much of the content coaches put out is unoriginal so it doesnā€™t help the coach stand out and attract ideal clients.

    The 3 main content delivery methods paired with social posting are:

    New coaches can feel so exuberant about coaching that they search for inappropriate opportunities to use their new skills.

    I did this several times until I realized it was disrespectful. In one painful situation, I coached a troubled friend, and it caused a rift that took years to heal.

    It can look like this ā€¦ You perceive that someone is struggling and believe they ā€œneedā€ coaching. The belief that someone NEEDS coaching and the subsequent longing are signs to reign in the impulse to coach.

    It comes down to this ā€” to coach ethically, you and the person you are coaching must step consciously into the co-creative role and, later, step fully out of it.

    Thatā€™s why coaching is best done in a professional relationship with a paying client where consent is explicit.

    When I first started my business, I was pretty precious about every little thing.

    I purchased beautiful little envelopes and cards in my brand colors and paraphernalia with my brand logo on it thinking everyone would want those things.

    I sent my clients onboarding packages by mail with a fancy notebook, pen and, what I thought were other fun things.

    Of course, I didnā€™t consider the expense of these things either in my time or how it was digging into my profits.

    I spent so much time on things that I thought mattered and not enough time on the things that really did.

    Sometimes, I would send my clients birthday and Christmas gifts. I put a lot of thought into them.

    And when I didnā€™t, it was because I couldnā€™t decide what to send and I would feel badly about that.

    I wanted my clients to feel special. I wanted to show them I cared. And, I think I may have been compensating for my newness as a coach because I felt I was not enough.

    It breaks my heart to see so many coaches stuck. Iā€™ve been there.

    When new coaches reach out to work with me, I ask them for a snapshot of what they're doing to build their business.

    Nearly all admit that their head is spinning because theyā€™re doing stuff like this:

    Ā· Looking at other coach's websites, which inevitably is anxiety producing. And, you donā€™t know if that site is client-winning or a dud.

    Ā· Force feeding massive amount of information.

    Ā· Surfing for answers to BIG questions like how do I choose my niche or what do I need to do to earn well as a coach? Answers are complex and itā€™s best to get actual support for those things.

    Ā· And, investing in programs out of fear, sure this next shiny object will solve all their problems.

    That fire hose of confusing information leaves you breathless with overwhelm and unable to move forward.

    This is what I call the new coach swirl and spin and itā€™s time to snap out of it.

    One of my VIP clients emailed me asking if she could coach me in our next session to get more practice.

    It wasnā€™t without risk. How might it affect our mentoring relationship?

    As a highly experienced coach, I can say without hesitation that not every coach will be the best client for me. And not every client will be the best client for you either.

    In fact, some clients could end up being difficult to work with. In that case you and the client may suffer each time you have a session. And thatā€™s sad because here you are intending to do good yet harm could be done.

    I assure you, itā€™s not because thereā€™s anything wrong with that client or that thereā€™s anything wrong with you. It comes down to how well the client aligns with you and you align with the client.
