  • In our final episode of Season 9, we’re speaking with Jill Gunter, Chief Strategy Officer at Espresso Systems, the coordination layer that unites chains, rollups, and applications.

We start off with a hot topic nowadays which is whether we should be focusing more on building infrastructure or apps. You might assume you know where Jill stands on this topic as someone who’s working on a middleware solution, but there’s actually a lot more to the story from her perspective.

Jill has lots of excellent analogies to help us better understand technical concepts like shared sequencers and rollups, and she debunks some common misconceptions people have about Espresso ahead of their mainnet launch this quarter.

This is an excellent episode for the nontechnical person to listen to to better understand how various components of blockchains work, as well as for the more technical person to have some of their uncertainties about shared sequencers and the work Espresso is doing around that cleared up.

We spend the second half of this convo talking about crypto in the global south - what types of apps and use cases are being built out there and more importantly how to get funding into the hands of founders based in Africa and LATAM.

  • In this episode, we’re speaking with Toby Shorin, Laura Lotti, and Sam Hart from Other Internet about their most recent article on crypto’s three body problem, clarifying some common misconceptions about headless brands, and getting their take on the current state of onchain culture.

The idea for this collaboration or interview came about when we had Jon Wu on the podcast last season in S8 E4 which aired on May 9, 2024. In that episode, Jon criticized the concept of a “headless brand” that was coined by the Other Internet team back in 2019, and Toby Shorin responded that Jon’s interpretation of “headless brands” was not what the authors had intended when they wrote the article. It turns out that many people have similar interpretations of “headless brands” that Jon had, so it was helpful and productive to give the Other Internet team a chance to clarify what they meant.

We then discuss their latest article on crypto’s three body problem and give the team a chance to speak about it for the first time since publishing the article, and finally I asked Sam about a spicy post he wrote recently that called out a lot of the current onchain culture for being “completely soulless” and a “cultural wasteland.”

Toby, Laura, and Sam were nominated for Rehash by Diana Chen and voted onto the podcast by Richie Bonilla, Triumph, fifthworldzach, Tim Black, Birb, Amy Jung, Rachael Amy, and Anay Sim.

  • In this episode, we’re speaking with Sophia Dew, DevRel Engineering Lead at Celo, about all things onchain funding and what goes into launching a layer 2 blockchain.

Sophia joined Celo about a month ago, and prior to that she was working on Public Goods Network, or PGN, a layer 2 blockchain focused on public goods. PGN ended up running out of money and winding down but Sophia learned tons of lessons along the way about maintaining a blockchain that she shares with us in this episode.

We then did a deep dive into onchain funding - what new things it enables, why it’s important, and Sophia gives lots of examples of use cases or apps she would love to see get built out in the onchain funding arena.

  • In this episode, we’re speaking with Rene Lubov, software engineer at Celestia, about data availability (DA), or what Rene prefers to call data publishing.

Rene is one of the founding engineers at Celestia and breaks down for us everything we need to know about DA and how it’s implemented at Celestia. We also talk about modularity in blockchains, light nodes, and other technical concepts that you may have heard of before but maybe don’t have a clear understanding of just yet. She does a great job of explaining all of these concepts clearly.

On a more personal level, Rene also shares about her background, how she taught herself to code, what protocol engineering is (hint: it’s very different from app development or smart contract coding), what it was like being a founding engineer at Celestia, and her experience as a woman in crypto having joined way back in the early days.

  • In this episode, we’re speaking with Bethany Crystal about all things fractional work, using AI to improve learning and workflows, and we wrap up with a quick discussion on the Bitcoin developer ecosystem.

Bethany is the web3 fractional work queen, and she shares very openly in this episode about her experience as a fractional worker in web3, what her process looks like, and practical tips for others to think outside of the box about how they want to work.

As a mother of two and hobbyist of many things, Bethany has had to think creatively about how she can find the best balance for herself to do all the things she wants to do in life. For her, the answer was fractional work, or working on various projects on a contract or part time basis so that she has time for other aspects of life she enjoys and so that she can have her curiosity constantly satisfied with a variety of projects.

She talks about some of the pros and cons to being a fractional worker, the types of people she believes are best suited for the job, and gives us practical tips for identifying our core skillsets and finding work. She also shares some of the ways she’s been using AI to aid in her workflow and help her learn new skills at a much faster rate as well.

Bethany was nominated by DeFi Beats and voted onto the podcast by DeFi Beats, Parker Jay-Pachirat, Birb, Triumph, fifthworldzach, David Phelps, Spencer Graham, Andy Boyan, and Nick Naraghi.

  • In this episode, we’re speaking with Grace Guan, co-founder of Unlonely, a web3 livestreaming platform, about web2 vs web3 media, inner workings of YouTube algorithms, and how traditional media platforms can stop exploiting creators by getting rid of ads and algorithms in this new iteration of media we’re building in web3.

Grace and her brother, Brian, co-founded Unlonely together and have been doing a phenomenal job of onboarding creators to the platform. Grace shares some stats on their user base and viewership in this episode as well as what she thinks people working on consumer crypto apps need to do differently in order to get more users onto their platforms.

If you’re a creator or anyone working adjacent to web3 media, you won’t want to miss this episode with Grace.

Grace was nominated by Winny and voted onto the podcast by Winny, Triumph, Maz, Andy Boyan, Birb, David Phelps, Lucas, Ernest Kou, and myself, Diana Chen.
