  • In this episode I chat with Andrew Brown from East72 Holdings to debunk some financial metrics.

We look at discounted cash flow (DCF) valuations, a metric often authoritatively trumpeted by analysts. Andrew argues that DCF is useless for valuing most companies: it's based on unfounded assumptions and crystal-balling and can be manipulated to fit any narrative.

Then there's EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization). Andrew agrees with Charlie Munger's assessment (bullshit!).

  • In this episode I'm joined by Elio D'Amato from Stockopedia to unravel the mysteries of investing and ask the fundamental questions: What is a stock market? Why does it exist? And how can you, as an investor, navigate its complexities?

The stock market is not just a place where stocks are traded; it serves a crucial role in raising capital for companies. We break down the concepts of primary and secondary markets, The primary market is where companies initially raise funds. Once listed, these companies enter the secondary market, where shares are traded among investors.

Lelde is a former Wall Street journalist who sees the importance of company announcements beyond their role of legal compliance. She describes them as "equity narratives," a storytelling medium that offers investors a deeper insight into the companies they are invested in. These announcements, which range from earnings reports to leadership changes, are crucial for assessing a company's financial health and strategic direction.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how little I know about the metrics that investors use to value companies. This week Craig Mercer joined me again to discuss Return on Equity or ROE. But like all the best metrics, they become more complicated the more you dig into them. The warning for beginners is to not take a metric on face value. Craig Mercer is the Chief Research Officer and Head of ESG at Dalton Investments (Australia). Dalton Investments LLC is a value-focused investment management firm with expertise in Asia, Emerging Markets and global equities.

There's plenty of great lessons in this interview & much more in the book. There's a lot to avoid but as Michael says: "Don't be discouraged by all the negative arguments I'm putting forth. I don't believe you need to become a champion to become a really good investor. Market returns are fantastic returns as long as you achieve them. Don't try and shoot for the stars cuz you're probably full flat on your face. But if you accept that you're gonna be delivered market returns and you are patient, then market returns can be spectacular returns given the power of compounding."

In a market rife with complexity and unpredictability, how do you carve out a path to consistent profitability by managing risk and securing gains? Fadi Diab, is known as The Gladiator on X (FKA Twitter). He's a seasoned microcap investor who's mastered the art of risk management over profit-chasing. Fadi shares his journey from a beginner who blew up his account twice to a savvy investor who now focuses on the potential for significant wins while minimizing losses.

Fadi's philosophy pivots on four questions:

Why am I entering? How much money will I make if things go according to plan? How much will I lose if they don't? What factors will determine when I should sell?

  • In this episode I had the pleasure of welcoming Prashant Mohan, Chief Marketing Officer of Sharesight, to discuss the importance of tracking your investments and optimizing your portfolio.

Prashant's journey began as a software developer, eventually leading him to roles at Google and Westpac before diving into the fintech space. His experience at Google, a company known for its data-driven approach, taught him the importance of prioritizing and analyzing data for business decision-making.

One of the key takeaways from our conversation was the concept of emotional investing. Prashant shared his personal experiences, highlighting the challenges investors face when trying to time the market or reacting to news. This often leads to buying at the peak, a common mistake among retail investors.
