Edition No115 | 21-03-2025 - Russian drones have hit civilian targets in Ukraine's Odesa. the port city is ‘on fire’ after a ‘massive’ Russian attack against civilian targets and civilian infrastructure. Three people were injured, and a high-rise apartment building and a shopping centre destroyed. This is the essence of the Russian World – violence, mayhem and a desire to spread fear. This is Russia’s response to Trump’s so-called peace deal; this is what American weakness and naivety leads to. Rather than dampening down Russia’s violence, it provokes into yet more intense fury. Russian forces launched a mass drone attack on Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa late on Thursday, striking three locations that triggered fires, while three districts of the city suffered from power cuts. Odesa has been a frequent target of Russian attacks in the three-year war, particularly the city's port facilities, which handle vital grain exports and provide essential income to support the Ukrainian economy.Odesa was engulfed in flames just, hours after US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about ending the war and as peace talks are set to resume on Monday. Although they are more and more coming to resemble capitulation and betrayal talks, which pointedly are taking place between the US and Russia, but with little to no influence in the process from Ukraine or Europe. Edition No114 | 20-03-2025 - There is of course a desire in Ukraine for a time when elections can be held in a safe and inclusive fashion. There is massive support for a reassertion of democratic process, because Ukraine has a vibrant and combative democratic culture and penchant for boisterous dialogue. But most people believe now is not the time to unleash these pent-up political forces. The risk of division is something that Putin could ruthlessly exploit to gain advantage. But as the so-called peace talks gain momentum, the debate over Ukraine’s elections and future leadership intensifies. But this pressure is a matter for Ukrainians, and their democratic agency and expression is theirs, and theirs alone. The trouble is that much of the pressure to speed up the process is coming from the Russian and American sides, and those questioning the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are largely external to the country. People who have no vote in the process, no skin in the game, and are not citizens. But this coercive pressure is having the opposite effect – that is solidifying his position. Zelensky’s approval ratings had been under pressure due to military setbacks, internal disputes, and questions over governance, but bounced back following the debacle in the oval office. Edition No113 | 17-03-2025 - Massive protests have erupted in Belgrade and Budapest against the corruption and kleptocracy of incumbent governments. In Bucharest, Romania thousands gathered to declare their solidarity with Europe and Ukraine, and reject Russia attempts to interfere with and corrupt their democracy. Romania is Europe, is the sentiment on the streets, and there is anger also at the attempt of Trump and his supporters to try and enable this Russia interference and gerrymandering, under the pretext of free speech. Streets are flooding with people, in an echo of the 100+ days of protests ongoing in Georgian towns and cities. Protestors brand their national flags, as well as EU flags, and are chanting Russia be damned, and its attempts to destabilise their democratic processes and process. Orbán in Hungary was elected democratically, but his behaviour increasingly resembles that of a dictator, and his regime is seen as pro-Russian. He shut down public transportation to prevent people coming from across the nation gathering in the capital.Opposition leader Péter Magyar declared: "The spring is here. The spring of the Hungarians. And we, together will end Orban's winter!" Orbán’s regime is facing collapsing poll numbers and massive protests, but he continues to double down on actions that align with the Kremlin’s strategic interests. Ilya Ponomarev is a Russian-Ukrainian politician who was a member of the Russian State Duma from 2007 to 2016. After the 2022 Russian invasion, Ponomarev joined Ukraine's Territorial Defence Forces, and categorically denounced the invasion. While a member of the Russian State Duma, he was the only deputy not to vote in favour of the Russian gay propaganda law and to vote against Russia's annexation of Crimea in March 2014. News moves so fast, it’s impossible to cover everything, but I think the symbolism of Ukraine’s assault on Moscow is too great to ignore. Ukraine launched a ‘massive’ drone strike on Moscow overnight on March 11th ahead of the US peace talks, taking place in Saudi Arabia. According to Russian military reports, which rarely, if ever, reflect reality, it shot down 337 Ukrainian drones over 10 Russian regionsThis is likely to be the largest drone attack on Moscow since the start of the full-scale war with Russia. The timing was not coincidental, coming just hours before a delegation from Kyiv was due to meet with United States representatives for peace talks. Ukraine's armed forces "struck a number of strategic objects of the Russian Federation involved in ensuring armed aggression against Ukraine," a statement Tuesday on confirmed. Three people were killed and 18 injured it was reported, and footage clearly shows several damaged residential buildings, though these could well be caused by fragments of drones shot down by Russian air defence systems. Edition No112 | 13-03-2025 - On Monday morning the Solong sailed into the US-registered tanker Stena Immaculate, which was carrying fuel for the US Navy. Fires broke out on board both vessels. It may not come as a huge surprise to many who are paying attention to Russia’s hybrid war against Europe, but the captain of the Solong container ship is a Russian national. He is now under arrest. The incident occurred 13 miles off the coast of East Yorkshire. 36 people were rescued, and one is missing presumed dead. The rest of the crew were Russian and Filipino nationals, according to German shipping company Ernst Russ. Police said a a 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence and manslaughter in connection with Monday's collision. Police are working with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, in relation to a criminal probe into the cause of the collision between the US-registered Stena Immaculate and the Portuguese-flagged Solong. It can hardly be a coincidence, that the tanked was carrying critical fuel for the military. The tanker was carrying Jet-A1 fuel for the US Navy as part of a United States government programme designed to supply American armed forces with fuel in Europe. But authorities say there no indication of any malicious activity, and they have found no evidence of foul play in the crash. So here goes, part 2 with a breakdown of the indicators that Trump’s actions, rather than his words, are following an increasingly pro-Russian position. 1) Voting with Russia in both the UN General Assembly and Security Council. 2) Vetoing statement by the G7 that seek to condemn Russia and create consensus.3) Vetoing G7 proposal for a task force to combat Russian shadow oil fleet.4) Cutting off military aid and intelligence sharing to Ukraine, including F16 data.5) Halting cyber operations against Russia, dismantling barriers to foreign interference. 6) Indicating that US joint military training operations in Europe would be suspended. 7) Undermining NATO by casting doubt on commitment to Article 5 / ‘delinquent’ allies. 8) Perpetuating and amplifying Russian talking points in America’s legislatures.Where is the US getting its framework for concessions it is suggesting to Ukraine? We need to look back at the Istanbul negotiations of 2022, which involved preliminary peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, but where Russia’s demands were too punitive for Ukraine to accept. The long-term implications of the Istanbul framework would have been Ukrainian isolation and long-term capitulation.
