Like many East Coast racers, Alice started at her local mountain - Attitash in New Hampshire. Alice's ski journey led through Stratton Mountain School to earning a spot on the U.S. Ski Team at 19, where she competed on the World Cup circuit and represented Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

In this episode Nicole and Sarah welcome ski mom Isabelle Winkles. Isabel is the CFO of a software company, and also an alpine race team coach at Mohawk Mountain in Connecticut. Isabel got involved in coaching after encouragement from other parents, despite not having extensive racing experience herself as a child.
Isabelle discusses the progression of ski programming for kids, from learn to ski to development teams and competitive alpine race teams. Isabelle notes that equipment needs and costs increase as children advance, but emphasizes the importance of finding hand-me-downs and used gear through team networks.
For Isabelle, coaching has provided dedicated time with her own children while allowing her to stay active and involved in a sport she's passionate about. For Isabel’s family, typical apres-ski activities include hot tubs, snacks, and early bedtimes for tired kids.

Our Facebook group has grown to over 15,000 members and is a tremendous resource for ski moms to connect and ask questions about everything ski related. We are launching some exciting new initiatives like in-person ski events at various mountains, a self-care "Lunch and Learn" video series, and we're even publishing an aprés ski cocktail cookbook in December.

In this episode Nicole and Sarah interview Janna Allen, Ski Patrol Director at Brundage Mountain in Idaho. Janna shares her journey from a ski-loving child to a professional snowboarder and eventually a ski patrol leader.We learn about what it means to be a Ski Patrol Director, overseeing ski patrol operations, including the use of explosives for avalanche control and managing medical emergencies on the mountain. Janna discusses the daily challenges of ski patrol, from unpredictable schedules to handling serious injuries. She emphasizes the importance of flexibility in hiring and scheduling to attract and retain women in ski patrol, noting that at Brundage, 42% of patrollers are women, compared to the national average of 23%.
We discuss the qualifications needed for ski patrol, such as Outdoor Emergency Care certification or EMT training, and the physical skills required to operate rescue toboggans. Janna offers valuable safety tips for skiers and snowboarders, including the importance of pre-season fitness, knowing emergency contact numbers, and following the skier's responsibility code.
We loved learning about the apres ski scene in McCall, Idaho, which includes activities like hockey, snowmobiling to hot springs, and local dining.

In this episode the Ski Moms host Shannon Smith, Founder of Range Fitness. Range Fitness has a variety of offerings from one-on-one coaching to a group training subscription program focused on ski season prep. We were excited to learn about Shannon’s Range Snowfit program, a 4-week ski-specific program that’s perfect for busy ski moms.We learn about Shannon’s background and love of skiing, which started at age 3 in Whistler, BC. Shannon walks us through her educational background that includes a Bachelor's in Kinesiology and certifications in Exercise Physiology and Strength & Conditioning.
Shannon gives us her recommendations for how to best prepare for a happy and healthy ski season.
Aim for 2-5 workouts per week (2 strength, 1 aerobic, 1 recovery, 1 core/agility)Workouts can be done at home with minimal equipment Focus on hip strength and mobility for better ski positionConsistency is key - "Don't get ready, stay ready"Shannon shares some great tips for new moms getting back on the slopes:
