Shua is trying to get through all the great things heâs been enjoying the last couple months. And in the meantime heâs been listening to some Christmas music. And NO! Heâs not ashamed of it at all. Jay has been watching a series on Peacock called The Resort. Itâs an interesting mystery that stars Cristin Milioti and William Jackson Harper about a couple that make some interesting finds on a resort island.
Sci-Fi Saturdays
This week Sci-Fi Saturdays returns. Jay examines the 2007 space movie Sunshine. The movie is about a group of astronauts that are reigniting the sun, but whatâs more interesting is the impressive cast. Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, Rose Byrne, Benedict Wong, and Chris Evans are among the big names that are found in this movie that has drifted into obscurity. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. There are some new locations from Agents of SHIELD season 3. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.
Enjoy TV!
When Gene Roddenberry was trying to get Star Trek off the ground, it took a lot of convincing of executives, the help of influential stars, and a lot of reworking of ideas, stories, and characters. They created the pilot and it wasnât quite up to the standards that would manage to get it on the air. But eventually, the classic episodes we know and love did find their way to our TVs. Much has been written about and discussed about itâs legacy and influence, and we share some of the episodes that made it special to us. Brace for impact and get ready to explore Star Trek the original series.
Do you enjoy the original Star Trek? Which episodes do you like? First person that emails me with the subject line, âBoldly go!â will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to [email protected]

Jay has been powering through his 31 Days of Horror and found a gem with the Irish horror/comedy 2012 movie Grabbers. Itâs a lot like Tremors, but with more Ireland and more drinking. It was scary, funny, and entertaining. Shua couldnât wait to watch the documentary ÂĄCasa Bonita mi Amor! Itâs the story of South Park creator Trey Parker buying his favorite childhood destination, the famous Mexican restaurant Casa Bonita. Turns out this was Shuaâs place of employment for 23 years, so he was really interested.

Enjoy Being Scared!
You canât deny that people canât seem to get enough of getting scared. Psychologists think that there might be a reason that we keep coming back to spooky situations. And it may just help us survive. After examining exactly what happens when something frightening happens, we start to examine our own fears.
Then the fun begins. Whatâs better than talking about scary things? Making you pick from two different scary things. We run down the list of the most prominent fears and ask you which one youâd rather experience. Can you get through the whole show with the lights off? Come find out!
What scares you? First person that emails me with the subject line, âWanna see something really scary?â will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to [email protected]

Shua was not ready for prime time when he saw the new movie Saturday Night. Itâs the tale of the first, hectic night of the long running NBC skit comedy show Saturday Night Live. While not being 100% accurate, it is very informative and extremely entertaining with good performances of the legendary comedians and others involved in the creation of this American icon. Jay is Enjoying the HBO dramatic series The Penguin, an origin story of the classic DC comics Batman villain. Colin Farrellâs amazing transformation into the title character is phenomenal.

Enjoy Witches!
For hundreds of years witches have been the source of stories and fear. But the origins and creators of these fears are way scarier than what might have been actual practicing witches. A written record of a witch dates back almost 3000 years ago. In the mid 1400s some really ignorant and cowardly men wrote a book that created a hysteria of violence towards women who they accused of practicing witchcraft (whether they were or not)
Have we become wiser and more evolved today? Well, probably not. But we have a ton of witch characters in TV, books, and movies that can entertain us and even make us question the wisdom of how we treat others. Classic characters like Elphaba and Glenda from Wizard of Oz have lasted generations. Cartoon favorites like Maleficent, Broomhilda, and Sabrina gave us opportunities to laugh at the characters as kids.
Then, at the end of the 20th century, the characters in Harry Potter truly showed that witches could be powerful heroes. It really changed peopleâs perspectives of witches in our culture. Now we see them pop up in all kinds of different ways, both good and bad. We have no doubt that witchesâ legendary status will last forever.
Which witch do you watch? Who's your favorite? First person that emails me with the subject line, âIâll get you my little prettyâ will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to [email protected]

Enjoy John Candy!
John Candy was a Canadian actor, comedian, and all around nice guy. His humor was spotlighted on the series SCTV and expanded into the movies. Sometimes he played secondary characters, but other times he played a lovable and bumbling hero that we loved to root for. His life ended way too early, but he left us with some great comedy to enjoy for years to come.
Since we are closer and closer to Halloween, we pair some of the most popular candies with some of John Candyâs best movies. What a tasty way to laugh!

Enjoy Haunted Houses!
Welcome foolish Earbuds! We will take you on a tour of Haunted Houses from movies, TV, and the real world. What is it about an old spooky house that is falling apart, and making mysterious noisesâŠand people died there that scares us so much? Maybe thereâs no rational explanation, but it sure is fun. There have been countless stories for generations that get our blood flowing and our heart racing fast.
But movies and TV arenât the only place you can get frightened of a casa. There are real life ones that you can visit to hear histories of horror such as the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado or the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California.
And of course the classic haunted houses in theme parks such as the Haunted Mansion in several Disney Parks and others across the globe.
How do you feel about Haunted Houses? Would you spend the night in one? First person that emails me with the subject line, âBe sure to bring your Death Certificateâ will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to [email protected]

What weâre Enjoying
After the premiere of Agatha All Along on Disney+, Jay jumped headfirst into another Witchesâ Road. He watched The Wizard of Oz for the first time in years. Turns out itâs still a good movie and really quite creepy. Itâs easy to find and a definite classic you should revisit (or check out for the first time) Shua and his wife ventured out to a movie night at the Alamo. Without many expectations, they were pleasantly surprised by the newest animated interpretation of a classic toy, Transformers One. With a good story, an all-star cast, and great animation, it really put everything together in an entertaining way.
Enjoy Music!
We love our space songs. Not soundtracks from sci-fi (although those are great too) but songs that artists have written specifically about space. This week we examine some of our favorites throughout history. From Lounge to Classic Rock, there is no shortage of cosmic music that you can use to imagine you are peacefully (or dramatically) floating through the starscape. Songs we include are:
The Planets - Gustav Holst
2000 Light Years from Home - The Rolling Stones
Fly Me to the Moon - Frank Sinatra
Cygnus X-1 - Rush
Starman - David Bowie
Children of the Sun - Billy Thorpe
Rocket Man - Elton John
Slime Creatures from Outer Space - Weird Al
Flash - Queen
Astronaut - Duran Duran
Across the Universe - The Beatles
Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop) - Q-Feel
Space Oddity - David Bowie

Shua jumped head first into the pile of bricks that is LEGO Star Wars Rebuilding the Galaxy. He can give it his recommendation as a fun Star Wars story and a fun LEGO parody. Thereâs some fun new characters that youâll grow to enjoy and some great cameos from Star Wars favorites. Check it out on Disney+. Jay is enjoying the second season of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It has a more epic feel and is giving a very entertaining interpretation of Tolkienâs Middle Earth backstory of the origin of the rings and of Sauron.
Enjoy Movies!
Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong met in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1969, and started a friendship that lasts to today. They found they had a similar sense of humor and began improv together. They expanded to opening for others, and eventually headlining large venues. Their movies arenât deep, and often centered around infantile and drug humor, but it influenced a lot of people and set us on the path of understandingâŠwell, a little. We still donât understand the Corsican Brothers. Whether you loved them or hated them, they have been an important part of our culture and the comedy world.

Jay did a rewatch of Ted Lasso season 3 and was reminded how incredible this show really was. With rumors of a season 4 possible, nowâs a great time to go back and check out the jokes and the heart of the show starring Jason Sudeikis and a variety of very talented actors. Ted Lasso can be found on AppleTV+. Shua is enjoying the new season of Only Murders in the Building starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. Heâs not surprised that itâs good, but itâs been especially touching this season and still hysterical. Only Murders in the Building is on Hulu.

Shua seems to be overcoming his avoidance of scary movies. He watched A Quiet Place: Day One with Lupita Nyongâo and Joseph Quinn. It was an intense addition to the franchise and gives us a terrifying origin story for our planetâs downfall. Jay is spending some of the waning summer days playing disc golf with his son. A cheap and easy activity that is lots of fun and gets you moving outside. Check your area for some disc golf courses, or just make your own.

Greedy people may annoy all of us, but they make for an entertaining movie. Jay enjoyed the Joseph Gordon Levitt dark comedy Greedy People. It has a lot of twists and unexpected surprises that keep you entertained. So be prepared for an unexpected ending. Shua revisited the 1979 new beginning for a franchise. Star Trek - The Motion Picture may not be the best Trek film, but it has itâs merits, and it kept the universe alive.
Sci-Fi Saturdays
This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay reluctantly added the 2007 adaptation of the much loved 80s cartoon Transformers. This Michael Bay film was definitely a spectacle, but could it live up with our expectations? It depends who you ask, but either way, Jay breaks it down and gives his analysis on Sci-Fi Saturdays. 40 years ago Steve Martinâs movie career was really on the rise. He teamed up for the fourth time with Carl Reiner for the âbody swapâ comedy All of Me with Lily Tomlin. She plays Edwina Cutwater, a very rich woman who is about to die. Instead of coming to terms with it, she has hired a Swami to put her soul into Terry Hoskins, the daughter of Edwinaâs stable master Fred. But in a freak accident, she gets put in Steve Martinâs Roger Cobb instead. Now he has to find the Swami to fix it all. It was a fun concept and holds up today. Jay was reminded of a Michael Keaton movie from earlier this year called Knox Goes Away. It starts off as a movie about an assassin who is looking to get out of the business. But it quickly turns unique when you find out that Keatonâs character has a quickly worsening form of dementia. You can check it out on Apple TV+ or Max. Shua grabbed an old Sci-Fi paperback from his shelf called Earthship and Starsong by Ethan I. Shedley. It never made it into the annals of sci-fi legends, but it is an interesting tale of humans' quest (and selfishness) for survival in the universe. Unfortunately we made enemies of everyone else in the universe. You can find this book on Amazon and other online sources.
Sci-Fi Saturdays
This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay has reminded us of a 2006 Hugh Jackman movie called The Fountain. This unique movie tells a similar tale about a doomed couple from different time periods of history, which spans thousands of years. 40 years ago, a movie was released that was based on a possibly true story from 40 years before. Michael Pare and Nancy Allen star in the Philadelphia Experiment. Pare and Bobby DiCiccoâs characters get flung forward in time to 1984 following a failed Navy experiment in World War II. Their problems werenât over because they were still connected to the bizarre vortex that sent them there, causing painful outbreaks of electricity. Plus, the scientist who caused the accident, did it again with a whole town. Now Pare has to get back to stop it.
The movie is often compared to another WWII time travel movie called The Final Countdown. In that movie, the time travel happens in reverse, sending the USS Nimitz back to 1941 just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Which movie did it better? We compare them and explain which one we like the best.

Itâs a pretend game show where comedians and celebrities answer goofy questions about the internet and modern day goings-on. Clips of the CBS show can be found on YouTube. Jay is watching the new Time Bandits homage created by Taika Waititi. Itâs only a few episodes in, so we are reserving judgment. Jay took a trip to the other side of the world to Tuscany, Italy. It was a relaxing (yet very hot) trip to the old country to enjoy a little relaxing environment. Shua traveled to Anaheim, California and enjoyed Pixar Fest at Disneyland. They both had great vacations but are happy to be home.
Sci-Fi Saturdays
This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays we talk about 3 different sci-fi movies that Jay has analyzed. Idiocracy makes some bold (and sometimes accurate) predictions of the future of our country. The Prestige was a bizarre tale of two competing magicians and a Tesla machine. And Children of Men presented a scary dystopia where there are no new babies in the world and how that is really going to screw us up. Educate yourself and check out all of Jayâs articles on Sci-Fi Saturdays, only on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. There are some new locations from Deadpool 1 and 2 in preparation for the new movie. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.
Enjoy MacGuffins!
Youâve probably heard of a MacGuffin, but do you actually know what it is? MacGuffins themselves have been around about as long as stories, but the term originated in the 1920s and was made popular by the master, Alfred Hitchcock himself. While Hitchcock believed that the MacGuffin isnât important to anyone but the characters in the story, George Lucas believes that it can be a very strong emotional connection to the people enjoying the story.
Which MacGuffin philosophy is stronger to you? Whatâs your favorite MacGuffin? Let the battle commence! Nothing enhances an action movie quite like two classic characters battling it out! Jay and Shua examine the elegant grace of 'vs' movies!
VS movies! It's like standing in the hallway watching two other kids fighting it out and you're not the one getting in trouble. Hollywood discovered years ago that audiences wondered what it would be like if some of their favorite characters duked it out. Letâs find out!

After writing about Serenity for Sci-Fi Saturdays, Jay couldnât help going back to check out the 2002 series Firefly. It was such a great idea for a new universe. While we wish we could have gotten more episodes, we are grateful for the ones we have. Shua watched the new Ron Howard documentary about an entertainment icon. Jim Henson: Idea Man laid out the interesting and sometimes disjointed life of the main behind the Muppets. Itâs a very enlightening watch.
Sci-Fi Saturdays
This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay breaks down the groundbreaking and almost experimental 2006 film A Scanner Darkly. Itâs an animated film starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr. and several other well-known Hollywood elite. Based on a 1977 novel by Philip K. Dick, it takes place in a dystopian future but has some important messages for us today. Check out the breakdown now. Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. There are some new locations from Deadpool 1 and 2 in preparation for the new movie. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.

In the 1940s, Hollywood had found a strong audience for monster movies. Dracula, Frankenstein, and many more. We also craved our sci-fi attacks. But what if we started pitting some of those creatures against each other? Itâs like the classic boxing matches that everyone got excited for.
When Godzilla arrived on screen, it didnât take long to see how the battles could be even bigger! (pun intended) Those âvsâ movies started with him battling another behemoth star named King Kong. The pandoraâs box of âvsâ ideas had been open and now creators were matching all kinds of characters so that now we have a whole slew of exciting flicks. Jay and Shua generate a random list of characters and try to decide who would win if they made a movie with them.
What vs movies do you like? Which characters would you like to see go toe-to-toe? First person that emails me with the subject line, âIn this cornerâŠâ will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to [email protected]

Before Shua Enjoyed his first hurricane in Cancun Mexico, he got the opportunity to swim with dolphins. It was a very cool experience that helped him get in touch with nature. Jay tuned in to the new Beverly Hills Cop movie on Netflix. It did a great job of using some of the things that worked with the originals while modernizing it for todayâs audiences.
Sci-Fi Saturdays
This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay examined an experimental movie called Aeon Flux. This 2005 Charlize Theron film was based on an animated show, but production problems affected the final outcome after the director was held back from doing what was needed to polish it properly. Still fun to check out. Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. There are some new locations from Deadpool 1 and 2 in preparation for the new movie. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.

Itâs Shuaâs birthday! So we decided to celebrate with one of his passions, SCIENCE! As we were growing up we were so engaged when we encountered science. Whether it was an educational show with Carl Sagan, Beakman, or Bill Nye, or hands-on activities in class we loved to experiment and learn how the world worked.
Then Jay lays down some science trivia to see if Shua can stand by the knowledge he claims to have. And he opens his gifts to start his week of right.

Jay found an old black and white noir film called The Big Combo from 1955. It had some great examples of the mystery movies of the time. And some great performances from a few people you might recognize, such as Lee Van Cleef. Shua has been watching a very retro show on the Shout! Studios YouTube channel called Space: 1999. This was a show, pre-Star Wars that inspired Shua to enjoy sci-fi. You can check it out now, along with some other cool retro shows.
Sci-Fi Saturdays
This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay revisits the cinematic story from the Firefly universe. Serenity came out in 2005 in response to fans of the show that wanted more after its untimely cancellation. The movie also successfully tells a story of a fun western/sci-fi hybrid world. Check it out today! Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. This week in the United States is Independence Day. A time for the country to celebrate breaking away from a big empire. So this week we look at some filmmakers that break away from big empires of movie studios to do their own thing and get out a story that they are passionate about.
Well-known directors such as George Lucas, John Carpenter, George Miller, Kevin Smith, and Quentin Tarantino all got their starts by making small, independent movies. Not all filmmakers garnish as much power as these directors. Some remain small, but no less dedicated to their work. So kick up your feet and put on a movie that you may not have heard of before.
Are there independent films you recommend? What makes them enjoyable? First person that emails me with the subject line, âYour loan has been deniedâ will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to [email protected]

Shua was not ashamed to bust out the tissues as he watched the latest Pixar story featuring all our crazy emotions in Inside Out 2. It was a really great representation of becoming a teenager and can help people understand what emotions feel like. Jay is enjoying his newly installed built-in cabinets. This isnât one of those sitting-in-the-middle-of-the-room knock offs. No, these things are built right in there. So next time you need to hide from a pack of furry, toothy, alien critters, these are perfect for you!

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Obi-Wan Kenobi trades Coruscant for an island in the 2005 futuristic thriller The Island, starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. In 1984 Ivan Reitman presented a unique and entertaining comedy that most people thought would never work. Written by Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis, it told the story of some unusual scientists who make a paranormal discovery that would transform New York into⊠You know what? You already know the plot. What really made this movie stand out was the comedy of Bill Murry, Dan Aykroyd, and all the other popular actors and comedians that filled the screen in every scene. It became the number one movie of the year, even beating out Indiana Jones!
But how could they ever follow up the success? The inevitable sequel came out 5 years later. When we find the boys this time, they are a little down on their luck. Luckily, an evil, possessed painting is going to put them back in business. Peter and Dana are no longer together and she even has a baby from a failed marriage. While this sequel didnât match the success of the first movie, it was still a fun romp with the dead and we got to see that humor again.

Jay grabbed a Marvel comic book series from 2011 called Legion of Monsters. Itâs a riotous romp with classic comic monsters like Morbius, Werewolf by Night, the Living Mummy and Manphibian. Time to get spooky! Shua has been very busy, but has high praise for the 1970 documentary film Let It Be, all about the Beatles famous rooftop concert. After all the work Peter Jackson did on the Get Back series last year, they were able to restore the original and it looks great!
Sci-Fi Saturdays
This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay cultivated some red plants with the Spielberg version of War of the Worlds (2005). Tom Cruise leads up this modern day (and more accurate) telling of the classic 1898 HG Wells novel. It made for a much darker and realistic version people may not have been expecting. But we continue to be grateful that those Martians caught a cold. Check it out today! Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Since Chinatown was released in 1974, it has held its spot on many lists of great screenplays. Written by Robert Towne and directed by controversial director Roman Polanski, it tells the story of Private Investigator Jake Gittes, who is hired to find out if a womanâs husband is cheating on her. But things get complicated quickly as Jake discovers that the man is a high ranking official with the LA Water and Power Company and is being paid to steal water during a drought. The corruption goes very deep and Jake is thrown into it much deeper than he ever imagined (pun intended)
This movie brings the audience along with Jake as he discovers the clues as they get more and more complex. I was a noir film, with some of the tropes that go along with that, but it defied expectations of characters and plot twists. Film classes still teach this film as an example of great writing and when you watch it through the lens of good cinema, it improves your experience tremendously.
Have you ever seen Chinatown? If not, stop here and go watch it. Now have you seen it?
