The Color Timer podcast aims to speak with professionals who work with color.

Yet, so often, I fall into the habit of speaking with professionals closer to my field of film and television, but I really do want to cast the further and learn from professionals working in other disciplines—that is what we are doing in this episode!

Anna Evans is a contemporary New Zealand landscape painter, children’s book illustrator, mural painter, and games artist.

With so many talents at her disposal, who better to learn about color from?

I discovered Anna while watching an Instagram video she made about color mixing that challenges some of the fundamental things we learned in art class as children. I was totally hooked by the way Anna explained things.

Her passion for color and the threads of science that keep popping up throughout our conversation make this an episode for both technicians and artists. Anna’s work is beautiful, so after listening to our chat, please check it out through the links below.

It made me wonder, whose art most inspires and provokes you to try new color grading techniques?

Today, I will be speaking to Jason Bowdach. Jason is a fellow contributor here on Mixing Light. He is a colorist and online editor with an impressive CV that includes major networks such as Fox and Disney. Jason creates a suite of colorist tools through his company, PixelTools. Jason shares what inspires him to create software offerings for the industry and his approach to a new project. He also has an interesting view on AI / Machine Learning and its likely impact on our industry.

This is putting the shoe on the other foot at last. Jason has his very cool podcast, Color & Coffee, on which I was a guest, so now it’s time for Jason to answer some of my questions! Outside of Pixel Tools and his own grading work, Jason also teaches about color and post-workflow, so he keeps fairly busy, to say the least.

How can I be mesmerized by a television masterpiece while being incredibly stressed out by the chaos of the content? The Bear provokes both of those things. But today, we don’t have to worry about those questions because we focus on the show’s stunning production design and art direction!

In this episode, I chat with Production Designer Merje Veski and Art Director Lisa Korpan about how they got into the world of The Bear, what their roles are, and how they work together to create some of the best television I’ve ever seen.

Merje has a massive credit list, including Chicago Fire, Bobby & Iza, and Man of Steel, to name a few. Lisa’s portfolio includes Justified: City Primeval, Shining Girls, Candyman, and one of my personal favorite shows, Sense8—again, these are only a few.

    About The Bear
If you haven’t seen The Bear, it is an American psychological comedy-drama television series created by Christopher Storer. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, an award-winning chef who returns to his hometown of Chicago to manage the chaotic kitchen at his deceased brother’s sandwich shop. The Bear won 10 Emmy awards in 2023 and has been nominated for a record-breaking 23 Emmy awards, including outstanding production design for 2024.

Matt McFarland is a Digital Intermediate & Mastering Colorist at ColorTime based in Los Angeles.

In this episode of The Color Timer Podcast, we have a wonderful conversation that delves into the world of remastering classic films from days gone by, cult films, and those that turned into classics almost right after they were released.

I had briefly considered listing Todd’s films, but honestly, the list is so massive that the following shortlist misses out on so many amazing films that he has worked on. So definitely check out his IMDB, and you’ll see exactly the films that Matt has been involved with. Here are a few highlights to whet your appetite:

    - Mad Max: Fury Road – Mastering Colorist: Special Edition
    - Pacific Rim – DI Color Assist
    - Flight – Colorist
    - Up In The Air – Colorist
    - Revolutionary Road – Colorist
    - Hustle & Flow – Colorist
    - Matchstick Men – Remastering Colorist

You’ll soon see that there are more variables to manage than you might have imagined when bringing these films back to life. It’s inspiring to hear Matt’s combination of grading and analytical skills to achieve a result that not only pleases the filmmakers but also delights the fans! You’ll quickly see why Matt’s unofficial job description is that of a ‘forensic colorist’.

Stuart Semple is a multidisciplinary British artist who works in painting, sculpture, happenings, technology, and activism. He is well known for his sociologically engaged works, which often discuss youth politics, accessibility, and democracy.

On this session of the Color Timer Podcast I chat with Louper CEO Alex Williams. What is Louper? As Alex describes it, “It’s Zoom for video professionals.” While this snapshot is easy to picture, creating yet another review application in a crowded marketplace is no easy task, yet Louper has found its footing rather quickly. The platform allows live streaming without proprietary hardware boxes and is built around collaboration rather than pasting offline review links.

While it’s fun to geek out with the creators of our favorite bits of gear, we’re careful not to make this a cozy infomercial. Is remote grading really here to stay? Or is the human touch needed to drive a session forward? Join in on my wonderful conversation with Alex to find out.

The Color Timer Season 2 begins right now!

Bram Desmet joins The Color Timer to discuss monitors, philosophy, symbolic logic, LUT boxes, and his family's fallback plan.

Bram is the founder, CEO, and general manager of Flanders Scientific. His nonlinear path to launching a monitor company started with aspirations to become a philosophy professor and then a pilot while working as a bicycle repair technician. However, as he explains, these topics are all interconnected.

Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, Flanders Scientific has taken the post production industry by storm, creating an excellent sweet spot of price, features, accuracy, customer service, and value. If you’ve been on a film set lately, chances are you’ve seen the FSI Zunzheng stamp of approval at the DIT cart or the video village.

He’s been interviewed many times, but I feel confident this is the first time he’s done it with a 15-minute sand timer running. I also feel confident that it’s one of the first times he’s focused more on discussing philosophy and Christmas decorations than monitors.

Don’t worry; we chat about monitors as well!
