    Running with chronic lower back pain after a herniated or bulging disc can be brutal. For most runners with chronic back pain, just the idea of going out and running causes symptoms, so what do you do?

     

    Well, it first starts with creating an environment of safety for your body, and then we begin to desensitize the pain you're experiencing, which leads to more and more opportunities to challenge the body with activities such as more and more running.

     

    My student Cole is a super active guy who loves spending time with his kids in the yard and enjoying his time hitting the pavement on his daily runs.

     

    Both his time with his kids and running were taken from him when the pain from his lower back injury became too much to handle.

    What I like to focus on with students is breaking down these common painful movements and finding ways to build resilience back into the lower back so the pain melts away.

     

    So today, I want to give you a simple 4-step exercise progression to not just build strength in the lower back but earn back the ability to bend without pain or sciatica shooting down your legs.

    If you’ve been dealing with chronic low back pain for any period of time, odds are someone has suggested surgery.

     

    What can be a scary and very dangerous decision can also be the most necessary for your unique situation.

     

    I get the pleasure of working with chronic back pain suffered both before and after surgery and today I want to share a massive success story of my student Pilar after an L4-S1 fusion.

     

    Pilar was scared to move, afraid of picking the wrong exercises and activities, and dealt with constant aches and pains even after her surgery.

     

    Her l4-S1 lumbar fusion made her feel fragile and unable to show up as a mom to her little girl.

     

    Until she discovered the Hybrid Relief Method.

    If you're trying to build strength using back-friendly workouts after an l4-l5 or l5-S1 disc herniation/bulge, the core exercises you pick are extremely important.

     

    Just doing any old core exercises could cause the disc herniation to become worse, which will only make your symptoms worse, pushing you deeper into a cycle of chronic lower back pain.

     

    Today, I want to share two of my personal favorite core exercises that I used to rehab my ruptured l5-s1 disc issue and degenerative discs.

    Building back strength is really important if you've been dealing with chronic lower back pain for any length of time.

    Over time, the pain, fear, and lack of use create atrophy or muscle weakening in the back, which only sends you deeper into pain, fear of use, and weakening.

    The worst thing you could do with exercises like the barbell bent over a row is to keep doing it, thinking the pain will eventually go away.

    Instead, while you continue to learn to heal the source of pain, we want to pick exercises that allow us to train these "scary" or "painful" muscles in ways that promote healing and strength building.

    Today, I'll reveal two back exercises that I have used as a bent-over row alternative.

    These always leave my back feeling great!

    Running with a sensitive lower back (l4-l5 or l5-S1 disc area) can be miserable.

    Most doctors will tell you to give it up and that it's just "destroying" the discs in your back.

    This couldn't be any further from the truth. In fact, there is more current research supporting the POSITIVE impacts running can have on a disc injury over time.

    So today, instead of rolling over and throwing your running shoes in the trash, let's throw them on and approach running a little smarter while you continue to heal your back.
